What is the Luddite Bendy Pen Case?

It is a slim canvas pen case that opens flat to turn into a pen tray. Luddite, a Fukuyama, Hiroshima stationery maker, says the design makes each action meaningful: you open it, slide pens into it, store small things and use it as a tray.

This guide covers the No. 8 canvas version. Luddite sells the same shape in denim and leather too. We read its shop and two retailers on November 2, 2026.

How big is it?

195 × 80 × 30 mm closed (7.7 × 3.1 × 1.2 in), per Luddite. The Journal Shop gives the same numbers. Luddite doesn’t give a weight or an open size.

How does it open into a tray?

Luddite’s page names the four actions; the Journal Shop explains the layout. According to the Journal Shop, the case works two ways: clipped together it has two zippered compartments, and unclipped it shows five hidden pen sleeves in a tray-like layout. Luddite’s photo shows the opened case lying flat with pens standing in a row, a zipper down each side and four snaps.

Hunter Paper Co. describes two mesh pockets for sticky notes and tape on the version it sells, which may differ from this one.

What is it made of?

Kurashiki canvas in No. 8 weight, with YKK zippers. Kurashiki is a city in Okayama Prefecture, and Luddite’s company pages name Kurashiki canvas and Okayama denim as its main materials. The Journal Shop says the canvas has been woven in Japan since 1888 and ages with use; we haven’t tested that.

Do the sources agree on the size and layout?

Mostly, with one retailer off by a few millimetres. Luddite and the Journal Shop both give 195 × 80 × 30 mm. Hunter Paper Co. lists a Bendy Pen Case at 190 × 90 × 30 mm and describes two mesh pockets, which Luddite’s page for this version doesn’t mention, so it may be another version of the case.

Luddite’s photos of the opened case show a pocket panel across the lower part, split by vertical stitching into five sleeves, with a snap at each corner. We drew the open view from them, so treat its proportions as approximate.

Which color should you pick?

Luddite lists six: black, khaki, gray, dull pink, blue gray and greige. The Journal Shop sells five of them, without dull pink. We sampled each tint from Luddite’s photos, so the swatches are representative, not measured.

Who is the Luddite Bendy Pen Case for?

It suits people who carry a few pens and want a case that doubles as a desk tray.

  • Travel: it measures 195 × 80 × 30 mm, and the Journal Shop says it slips into a bag without adding bulk.

Skip it if you carry many pens: retailers give five sleeves, and Luddite gives no capacity.

How does it compare with other pen cases?

It is a slim, flat-lying case, not a stand-up pouch. For bigger options see our best pencil cases, and for another case with a zip, the DELFONICS Quitterie pen case. Luddite also makes the ALTDRAW pencil and the Function Notebook.

Where is it made, and what does it cost?

In Japan, per Luddite and the Journal Shop.

Luddite’s shop listed ¥2,310 (about US$15) on November 2, 2026, a $$ price ($5–20). The Journal Shop listed £18.99 (about US$25), which would sit in our $$$ band ($20–75). We found no US shop selling this exact canvas version.
