Notes on these facts
- Made by Luddite Co., Ltd. (Fukuyama, Hiroshima, Japan). Made in Japan: Luddite's own shop page ends its spec list with the Japanese words for made in Japan. Source. Price: example listing.
- Colors: names per Luddite shop (Japanese), checked November 2, 2026. Luddite sells the ALTDRAW with brass in matte black and in matte silver on separate pages, each with a walnut or cherry wood barrel. The wood tints were sampled from Luddite's product photo; the maker says natural wood varies from piece to piece. Tints are representative, not measured. Shops stock different colors.

- Price bands are typical US retail, checked October 2026. Conversions to US dollars are approximate, at October 2026 rates (US$1 = ¥158 = ₩1,330 = NT$32.5 = CN¥6.7 = SEK 9.9 = DKK 6.7 = ₺49.6 = C$1.41 = A$1.43 = CZK 21.7; €1 = US$1.12; £1 = US$1.32; CHF 1 = US$1.21).
Key takeaways
- Luddite lists a 0.5 mm lead, a 27 g weight and a 4 mm guide pipe, and calls it a drafting pencil that is about 5 g heavier than its EVERDRAW.
- The barrel is walnut or cherry wood; the brass parts come in matte black or matte silver, so there are four combinations.
- Luddite says the balance sits toward the middle but the heavy build sends pressure straight to the paper.
- Luddite's shop priced it at ¥6,600 (about US$42) on November 2, 2026, and the US shop Yoseka at US$55, in our $$$ band ($20–75).
- Luddite sells a replacement tip part for ¥660 (about US$4.20) in case a drop bends the tip or breaks the lead.
What is the Luddite ALTDRAW?
It is a 0.5 mm drafting pencil that pairs a wooden barrel with brass parts. Luddite, a stationery maker in Fukuyama, Hiroshima, describes it as a stylish mix of wood and brass whose weight carries the “tapping” feel of each stroke straight to your hand.
Luddite’s site says it plans and wholesales pen cases, book covers and card holders in canvas and denim, so the ALTDRAW is one of its few writing tools. We read its shop pages on November 2, 2026.
What are the specs?
Luddite lists a 0.5 mm lead, a 27 g weight and a 4 mm guide pipe. It gives no length, diameter or lead grade, so the drawing below is in proportion, not to scale.

How does it feel to write with?
Luddite says it is built heavy, on purpose. Its page says the pencil is about 5 g heavier than the EVERDRAW and that the balance sits toward the middle, yet the weight puts firm pressure on the writing surface.
The 4 mm guide pipe is the part Luddite singles out for visibility at the tip. We haven’t written with it, so those are the maker’s claims; for lighter drafting options see best mechanical pencils for drawing, or the Pentel GraphGear 1000 at 20 g.
For a low-cost 0.5 mm pencil in six colors, see the Kaco Rocket mechanical pencil.
Which finish and wood should you pick?
There are four combinations, and the wood is the only part that changes by piece. Luddite lists walnut (darker in its photo) or cherry wood (lighter orange) and says natural wood varies in color, so two pencils of the same wood won’t match. The brass is matte black on one page and matte silver on the other, and Yoseka lists both woods for both finishes.
One oddity: Luddite’s replacement tip parts list the color as “walnut and tulip wood”, not cherry wood. We don’t know which wording is right for the tip parts, so check before ordering one.
Who is the Luddite ALTDRAW for?
It suits people who sketch or draft by hand and want a weighty, wooden-barrel pencil.
- Drawing and sketching: Luddite sells it as a drafting pencil with 0.5 mm lead and a 4 mm guide pipe for visibility at the tip.
Skip it if you want a light pencil: at 27 g it is built to be heavy, and Luddite gives no length or lead grade.
Can you replace the tip?
Yes, Luddite sells the tip part separately. Each costs ¥660 (about US$4.20), in matte black and matte silver, and Luddite says to swap it when a drop bends the tip or snaps the lead. On November 2, 2026 the matte black part was sold out and the matte silver part was in stock.
Does it have an eraser?
Luddite doesn’t say, and one retailer says it does. Yoseka lists an enclosed eraser; Luddite’s own page, which we read, doesn’t mention one. Check the shop photo of the knock end if that matters to you.
Where is it made, and what does it cost?
In Japan, per Luddite’s own shop page. The pencil comes in a decorative box.
Luddite’s shop listed ¥6,600 (about US$42) on November 2, 2026, and Luddite posted a price-revision notice on May 14, 2026 with a list for August 2026, which we didn’t open. Yoseka listed US$55 for the same pencil in either wood the same day, in our $$$ band ($20–75). Luddite also makes the canvas Bendy Pen Case and the Function Notebook, which we cover separately.
Frequently asked questions
What lead size is the Luddite ALTDRAW?
0.5 mm. Luddite's shop page lists only that size for the pencil, and the replacement tip parts are for 0.5 mm too.
How much does the Luddite ALTDRAW weigh?
27 g, according to Luddite. It says that is about 5 g more than its EVERDRAW, a model we haven't covered.
What is the ALTDRAW made of?
Luddite describes a mix of wood and brass. The barrel is walnut or cherry wood and the brass parts are matte black or matte silver. Luddite warns that the wood color differs from piece to piece.
How long is the guide pipe?
4 mm, which Luddite says makes the tip easy to see while you work. That is the usual drafting length, so the pencil can sit against a ruler.
Does the ALTDRAW have an eraser?
Luddite's page doesn't mention one. The US shop Yoseka says the pencil has an enclosed eraser, so the two sources differ and we haven't confirmed it.
Can you replace the tip if you drop it?
Yes. Luddite sells a matte black and a matte silver tip part for ¥660 (about US$4.20) each, saying to use it if the lead breaks or the tip bends after a drop. On November 2, 2026 the black one was sold out.
