Uni Kuru Toga vs Pentel Orenz: Rotation vs Sleeve
The Kuru Toga turns its lead about 9 degrees per stroke so the point wears evenly; the Orenz hides its lead inside a 3.0 mm sliding sleeve so it doesn't snap. Pick the Kuru Toga for an even line in 0.3 or 0.5 mm; pick the Orenz if you break lead or want 0.2 mm.

How do the Kuru Toga and the Orenz solve different problems?
The Kuru Toga fixes uneven wear by turning the lead; the Orenz fixes breakage by hiding the lead in a sleeve. They’re the two best-known “smart” mechanical pencils from Japan, but they aren’t rivals for the same job.
Mitsubishi Pencil launched the uni Kuru Toga in March 2008. Its engine turns the lead a little each time you lift the tip, so the point wears to a cone rather than a slanted wedge. Pentel launched the Pentel Orenz in 2014; one click pushes out a 3.0 mm metal sleeve, which slides back as the lead wears, so no bare lead sticks out to snap.
How do the specs compare?
They’re the same weight and nearly the same length; the Orenz goes finer and the Kuru Toga stays rounder.

Mitsubishi Pencil doesn’t publish the Kuru Toga’s length or weight; the Orenz figures differ a little by source, as noted.
Which one breaks less lead?
The Orenz, because its lead never sticks out past the sleeve. That is why Pentel can sell it with 0.2 mm lead, a size that snaps easily in an ordinary pencil.
The Kuru Toga still has bare lead past a fixed 2.9 mm sleeve. Mitsubishi Pencil says uneven wear causes snapping, so an even point helps, but the Kuru Toga isn’t built to stop breakage. For heavy hands, the spring-loaded Zebra DelGuard is the other anti-breakage design.
Which gives the more even line?
The Kuru Toga: keeping the point round is its whole purpose. Turning about 9 degrees per stroke, the lead makes a full turn every 40 strokes, so lines stay a steady width instead of thickening as one edge wears.
The Orenz doesn’t rotate, so its point can wear to a slant like any pencil. In 0.2 or 0.3 mm that matters less, since the lead is too thin to form much of a wedge.
What are each pencil’s weak spots?
The Kuru Toga needs you to lift the tip, and the Orenz’s sleeve moves.
- Kuru Toga: the rotation happens when the lead is pressed in and released, so long shading strokes don’t turn it, and retailer guides note a very light touch may not trigger it.
- Orenz: the sleeve gets shorter as you write, which Unsharpen notes makes it a poor fit for ruler and template work; the fixed-sleeve Pentel Sharp P205 suits drafting better.
What about the Kuru Toga DIVE and the Orenz Nero?
They’re the flagship versions, and both add automatic lead feed. Mitsubishi Pencil’s KURUTOGA DIVE adds automatic feed with five settings to the rotating engine and lists at ¥5,500 (about US$35) in Japan.
Pentel Japan’s page for the Orenz Nero dates it to 2017, says it combines the Orenz sleeve with lead that advances each time you lift the tip, and uses a 12-sided body of resin mixed with metal. It comes in 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5 mm (PP3002-A to PP3005-A) at ¥3,850 (about US$24). Japanese models and prices may differ from what US shops stock.
Which should you buy?
Pick the Kuru Toga if you write notes in 0.5 mm with normal pressure and want a steady line; pick the Orenz if you snap lead, press hard at an angle or want a 0.2 or 0.3 mm line.
- uni Kuru Toga: the cheaper way to an even point. It’s the pencil in our best stationery for students kit, and it pairs well with uni Nano Dia lead.
- Pentel Orenz: fewer clicks, no broken leads and the finest sizes; it ships with Pentel Super Hi-Polymer B lead in the US.
- Still unsure: our best mechanical pencils roundup ranks both against six other picks.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Kuru Toga or the Orenz better for students?
For everyday notes in 0.5 mm, the Kuru Toga, because its point stays even as you write. If a student keeps snapping lead or wants a very fine 0.2 or 0.3 mm line, the Orenz.
Does the Kuru Toga stop lead from breaking?
Not directly. It keeps the point from wearing to a slant, which Mitsubishi Pencil says reduces snapping, but the lead still sticks out unprotected. The Orenz keeps the lead inside its sleeve.
Does the Orenz rotate the lead?
No. The Orenz protects the lead with a sliding metal sleeve; it doesn't turn it, so the point can wear to a slant like an ordinary pencil.
Which is better for drawing and shading?
Neither is ideal. The Kuru Toga only turns the lead when you lift the tip, so long shading strokes don't rotate it, and the Orenz's moving sleeve makes ruler work awkward.
Kuru Toga DIVE or Orenz Nero: which is the better premium pencil?
Both feed lead automatically. The DIVE adds five feed settings to the rotating lead and lists at ¥5,500 (about US$35) in Japan; the Orenz Nero adds automatic feed to the sliding sleeve, in 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5 mm, at ¥3,850 (about US$24).
Can you use any lead in the Kuru Toga and Orenz?
Yes, any standard lead of the matching diameter fits both. Uni's US Kuru Toga starter set comes with Nano Dia lead, and Pentel of America ships the Orenz with Super Hi-Polymer B lead.
Are the Kuru Toga and the Orenz made in Japan?
Yes, according to retailers and Pentel of America's catalog. Neither maker states the country on its Japanese product page.
