What is the Zebra Tect 2way?
It’s a Zebra mechanical pencil that advances lead by shaking or by clicking, with a ring that switches the shaker off. Zebra’s Japanese page calls it a comfortable pencil whose lead comes out just by shaking the barrel, with a pipe tip that keeps the point in view.
It’s one of the pencils Reddit’s r/mechanicalpencils keeps recommending as a cheap step up from a basic click pencil, and the newer knurled Tect 2way RO shows up in many collection photos. The black 0.5 mm had 1,269 ratings on Amazon US on October 23, 2026.

How does the shake mechanism work?
A weight inside the barrel slides when you shake the pencil and works the lead advance, so one flick feeds new lead. You can also press the top button like any click pencil.
Zebra says the pipe tip keeps the point easy to see and writes firmly. Shake pencils suit long writing sessions, since you don’t shift your grip to reach the button.
What does the lock ring do?
Turning the ring in the middle of the barrel locks the shaker, so lead doesn’t creep out in a pocket or bag. Zebra adds that when the shaker is locked, the weight stays fixed at the bottom of the barrel, giving a low center of gravity for steady writing.
In practice you leave it unlocked at your desk and lock it to carry. The click button works either way.
Which version should you buy?

Frequently asked questions
What is a shaker mechanical pencil?
A pencil with a sliding weight inside the barrel: a quick shake moves the weight, which clicks the mechanism and advances the lead, so you don't have to move your fingers to the button.
How do you turn off the shake function on the Tect 2way?
Turn the ring in the middle of the barrel to the lock position. Zebra says this stops the lead advancing by accident when you carry it, and holds the weight low in the barrel.
What is the Zebra Tect 2way RO?
An upgraded version with a knurled metal grip, a one-piece lower barrel that doesn't loosen, and matte colors. Zebra Japan lists it at 22.5 g and ¥2,750 (about US$17), with the same 149 mm length.
Does the Tect 2way come in 0.7 mm?
Zebra Japan lists 0.3 mm (MAS41) and 0.5 mm (MA41) on its product page. Walmart also lists a 0.7 mm Zebra Zensations Tect 2Way, so check the model number before you buy.
Does the Tect 2way have an eraser?
Yes. Zebra Japan lists a replaceable eraser, refill type A, sold five to a pack.
Is the Zebra Tect 2way made in the USA?
No. It's a Japanese Zebra design sold through Zebra Pen in the US; neither Zebra nor the retailers we read state where it's manufactured.
