Key takeaways
- Weights differ by about 2 times: Graph 1000 for Pro about 11 g, Kuru Toga 10 g, rOtring 600 about 22 g and GraphGear 1000 about 20 g, per retailers and reviewers.
- The Pentel Orenz goes down to 0.2 mm lead (PP502) because its 3.0 mm metal sleeve slides back as the lead wears.
- The Kuru Toga turns its lead about 9 degrees each time you lift the point, a full turn every 40 strokes, so the tip wears to a cone.
- Pentel has made the Graph 1000 for Pro since 1986 and the Sharp P200 series since 1970; the GraphGear 1000 dates to 2002.
- Five picks are in our $$ band ($5–20); the all-metal rOtring 600 is in our $$$ band ($20–75).
What is the best mechanical pencil for drawing?
For most artists, the best mechanical pencil for drawing is the Pentel Graph 1000 for Pro: light, balanced and sold in four or five lead sizes. The other picks suit heavier hands, very fine detail, even line work, tight budgets and pockets. It’s #1 because it pairs a light 11 g body with a fixed 4 mm sleeve and four or five lead sizes, which suits both long sessions and fine work.
- Best overall: Pentel Graph 1000 for Pro. Why it’s here: about 11 g, half the rOtring 600, with a fixed 4 mm sleeve, a lead-grade window and a grip of rubber pads in metal.
- Heavy metal: rOtring 600. Why it’s here: about 22 g of all-metal hexagonal barrel, twice the Graph 1000, for people who like the pencil to do the pressing.
- Fine detail: Pentel Orenz. Why it’s here: the finest lead here, 0.2 mm, which its sliding 3.0 mm sleeve never leaves unsupported.
- Even point: Uni Kuru Toga. Why it’s here: the only pick that turns the lead as you draw, so lines stay the same width.
- Budget: Pentel Sharp P205. Why it’s here: the 1970s drafting classic, as light as any pick at 10 g, with color-coded barrels for each lead size.
- Pocket: Pentel GraphGear 1000. Why it’s here: the only pick whose 4 mm sleeve retracts into the body, so it can ride in a sketchbook pocket.
How did we choose these picks?
We compiled these picks from published sources, not hands-on testing: makers’ and retailers’ specs from our single-pencil guides, US availability and price band. We weighted lead size range, weight and the sleeve, the three things that matter most for drawing, and picked one pencil per drawing style.
How do the best mechanical drawing pencils compare?
Lead size range, weight and the sleeve matter most for drawing; all six are made in Japan.
| Pencil | Pick | Lead sizes (US) | Length | Weight | Sleeve | Band |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Graph 1000 for Pro | Best overall | 0.3–0.7 mm (0.9 in Japan) | about 145 mm (5.7 in) | about 11 g | 4 mm fixed | $$ |
| rOtring 600 | Heavy metal | 0.5 · 0.7 mm | 142 mm (5.6 in) | about 22 g | Fixed | $$$ |
| Pentel Orenz | Fine detail | 0.2 · 0.3 · 0.5 · 0.7 mm | 142–145 mm (5.6–5.7 in) | 10 g | 3.0 mm sliding | $$ |
| Uni Kuru Toga Standard | Even point | 0.3 · 0.5 mm | 142 mm (5.6 in) | 10 g | Fixed | $$ |
| Pentel Sharp P205 | Budget | 0.5 mm (P203–P209 for others) | 145 mm (5.7 in) | 10 g | 4 mm fixed | $$ |
| GraphGear 1000 | 0.3 · 0.5 · 0.7 · 0.9 mm | about 149 mm (5.9 in) | about 20 g | 4 mm retractable | $$ |
Lengths and weights are the retailer and maker figures in each pencil’s guide.
Which lead size should you draw with?
Thin leads for line and detail, thick soft leads for tone. A 0.2 or 0.3 mm lead draws crisp hatching without sharpening; a 0.7 or 0.9 mm lead is strong enough to lay down shading in B grades.
Only the GraphGear 1000 covers 0.3 to 0.9 mm in the US; the Graph 1000 for Pro adds 0.9 mm (PG1009) in Japan. Pentel’s P200 series color-codes its barrels by size: P205 black for 0.5 mm, P207 blue for 0.7 mm and P209 yellow for 0.9 mm.
Light or heavy: which pencil body is better for drawing?
Light pencils suit long sessions and loose sketching; heavy ones suit people who like the pencil to do the pressing. The Graph 1000 for Pro and Kuru Toga weigh about 10 to 11 g, half the rOtring 600’s 22 g and the GraphGear 1000’s 20 g.
Weight near the point steadies a line. Pentel’s knurled metal grip on the GraphGear and the rOtring’s metal barrel both put mass forward.
Which pencil keeps the finest point?
The Orenz for the thinnest lines and the Kuru Toga for the most even ones. The Orenz’s 3.0 mm metal sleeve slides back as the lead wears, so lead as thin as 0.2 mm is never left unsupported; Pentel says the series passed 20 million pencils sold by July 2025.
The Kuru Toga instead rotates the lead about 9 degrees each time you lift the point, which keeps a cone-shaped tip. Our Kuru Toga vs Orenz comparison goes deeper.
What lead and grade should you use?
Use a premium polymer lead in a grade from HB to 2B, harder for construction lines and softer for dark tones. Pentel’s Ain Stein and uni’s Nano Dia both come as 60 mm leads; Mitsubishi Pencil sells 0.5 mm Nano Dia in ten grades from 4H to 4B.
Our pencil grades explainer shows what each letter means. For everyday writing rather than art, see our best mechanical pencils.
Where are these pencils made?
All six are listed as made in Japan, including the rOtring 600, a German brand. Pentel of America’s catalogs and product guides give Japan for its four pencils, and Japanese and US listings give Japan for the rOtring 600 and the Kuru Toga.
Frequently asked questions
What lead size is best for drawing?
Use two. A 0.3 or 0.5 mm lead for line work and detail, and a 0.7 or 0.9 mm lead in a softer grade such as 2B for shading. The Graph 1000 for Pro comes in 0.3 to 0.7 mm in the US and adds 0.9 mm in Japan.
Is a mechanical pencil good for shading?
For small areas, yes, with a thick soft lead. A thin lead breaks and scratches under side pressure, so use 0.7 or 0.9 mm in B or 2B, or switch to a wood pencil for large tones.
Is the rOtring 600 worth it for drawing?
If you like a heavy pencil. At about 22 g it's twice the weight of the Graph 1000 for Pro. It sits in our $$$ band ($20–75) and comes only in 0.5 and 0.7 mm.
Why do artists use a 4 mm lead sleeve?
A long, thin sleeve keeps the point visible and rides along a ruler or template. Every pick except the Orenz and Kuru Toga has a 4 mm sleeve; the Orenz's 3.0 mm sleeve slides back as you draw.
What lead should I put in a drawing pencil?
A premium lead such as Pentel Ain Stein or uni Nano Dia. Mitsubishi Pencil sells Nano Dia 0.5 mm in ten grades, 4H to 4B, and both come as 60 mm leads.
Can a Kuru Toga be used for drawing?
Yes, for even line work. Mitsubishi Pencil says its engine turns the lead about 9 degrees each time you lift the point, so the tip wears to a cone and line width stays steady. For shading, a thicker lead in another pencil is easier.
What is the cheapest good mechanical pencil for sketching?
The Pentel Sharp P205. It has the same 4 mm drafting sleeve as pencils costing far more, weighs 10 g per Galaxus, and the P209 version takes 0.9 mm lead for shading.
