Quick answer

The Pentel Orenz is a Japanese mechanical pencil whose metal sleeve covers the lead and slides back into the pencil as the lead wears, so the lead never sticks out unprotected. That lets it write with lead as fine as 0.2 mm. Pentel Japan lists it at 145 mm and 10 g; JetPens gives 142 mm for the 0.5 mm.

What is the Pentel Orenz?

The Orenz is a Pentel mechanical pencil built so the lead never sticks out unprotected, which lets it use lead as fine as 0.2 mm. Pentel launched it in 2014, and its Japanese site says the series had sold more than 20 million pencils by July 2025, mostly in Japan.

In the US, Pentel of America sells it as the “Orenz 1-Click” with a limited-lifetime warranty. Our best mechanical pencils roundup names it the pick for writing without lead breakage.

How does the Orenz sleeve work?

One click pushes a 3.0 mm metal sleeve out around the lead; as you write, the lead wears and the sleeve slides back into the pencil with it. Pentel calls this the Super Sliding Sleeve. Because the lead is always inside the sleeve, there’s no bare length of lead to snap.

Pentel Orenz 0.5 mm point drawn to scale in three stages: sleeve out 3.0 mm after one click, sliding back as the lead wears, and fully back so you click again
The sleeve at 1 mm = 24 px: out, sliding back, and back in.

When the sleeve is fully back, you click again. Retailer copy says this lets you write longer between clicks than with an ordinary pencil.

Lengths differ a little between listings. Pentel’s Japanese design archive gives 13 × 9 × 145 mm and 10 g for the Orenz, and Orosy also gives 145 mm for the 0.2 mm model, while JetPens lists 142 mm and Unsharpen 14.3 cm; our drawings use JetPens’ 142 mm. Pentel Japan doesn’t state the country of manufacture.

Which Orenz lead size should you choose?

Pick 0.2 or 0.3 mm for tiny handwriting and fine detail; that’s where the sleeve matters most. Thin lead breaks most easily in an ordinary pencil, so the Orenz’s advantage is biggest at the small sizes.

Size US model Barrel color in Pentel’s catalog Good for
0.2 mm PP502W White Very small writing, annotations
0.3 mm PP503B Red Fine notes, math
0.5 mm PP505A Black Everyday notes
0.7 mm PP507C Blue Bolder lines, heavier hands

Pentel’s Japanese site lists the standard Orenz in 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5 mm only; the 0.7 mm is a Pentel of America model. Japan also gets more barrel colors since the 2025 renewal: three for the 0.2 mm (including dark green), six for the 0.3 mm (such as pale green and ice blue) and seven for the 0.5 mm (such as ocean green, bright yellow and fresh pink), which may not be sold in the US. Pentel also makes metal-grip versions of the Orenz in Japan, such as the XPP1005G2.

What lead and eraser does the Orenz use?

Any standard lead of the matching diameter fits; Pentel of America says the pencil ships with Super Hi-Polymer B lead, and the eraser refill is the Z2-1N. Pentel Japan’s August 19, 2025 release says the Orenz line was renewed on August 28, 2025 under the worldwide ORENZ logo, with the preloaded lead switched from HB to B in Japan because demand for darker leads has grown. Proshop also lists B in the European XPP505-A. In Japan the 0.2 mm takes a different eraser, the PPE-2 with a cleaning pin, at ¥132 (about US$0.80) for two.

The tiny eraser sits under the cap, as on most mechanical pencils. For heavy erasing, a separate block eraser works better.

If you choose 0.2 mm, buy a tube of matching refills with the pencil, since it’s the least common size.

How does the Orenz compare to the DelGuard and Kuru Toga?

The Orenz hides the lead, the Zebra DelGuard lets it give way on springs, and the uni Kuru Toga turns it to keep the point even.

Pencil Mechanism Finest lead Best for
Pentel Orenz Sliding sleeve 0.2 mm Fine lead, light precise writing
Zebra DelGuard Two springs 0.3 mm Heavy pressure
uni Kuru Toga Rotating lead 0.3 mm An even line width

For ruler work, the moving sleeve is a drawback; the fixed 4 mm sleeve of the Pentel Sharp P205 stays put against a straightedge.

Where is the Pentel Orenz made?

In Japan: Pentel of America’s 2022 catalog gives Japan as the origin of the ORENZ 1-Click. The Journal Shop and Monk Office (for the PP505A) also say Japan; Pentel’s Japanese product page doesn’t state a country. The company behind the brand, called Pentel Co., Ltd. until April 1, 2026 and now ASTRUM Corporation, is based in Tokyo.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Pentel Orenz stop lead from breaking?

The lead stays inside a metal sleeve while you write. As the lead wears down, the sleeve slides back into the pencil with it, so there is never bare lead sticking out to snap.

Do you have to click the Orenz while writing?

Much less than a normal pencil. You click once to push the sleeve out and write until it has slid all the way back, then click again. US retailer copy for Pentel of America's model calls this an extra-long write-out without clicking.

What lead sizes does the Orenz come in?

Pentel of America lists 0.2, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7 mm, with model numbers PP502, PP503, PP505 and PP507. The 0.2 mm is the size the Orenz is best known for.

Is the Orenz good for drafting with a ruler?

Not ideal. Because the sleeve slides back as you write, its length changes, which Unsharpen notes makes it a poor fit for ruler and template work; a fixed-sleeve pencil like the Pentel Sharp P205 is steadier there.

What lead comes in the Orenz?

Pentel of America says it ships pre-loaded with Super Hi-Polymer B lead, and Pentel Japan switched its preloaded lead from HB to B in August 2025. Any lead of the matching diameter fits.

Where is the Pentel Orenz made?

In Japan. Pentel of America's catalog gives Japan as the origin, and The Journal Shop and Monk Office agree.

What eraser refill does the Orenz use?

The Z2-1N, per Pentel of America's catalog. In Japan, Pentel lists the Z2-1N for the 0.3 and 0.5 mm and the PPE-2, which comes with a cleaning pin, for the 0.2 mm.

Orenz or DelGuard: which is better for not breaking lead?

Both work, in different ways. The Orenz suits very fine 0.2 and 0.3 mm lead and light, precise writing; the Zebra DelGuard's springs suit people who press hard.
