What is the uni KURU TOGA DIVE?

The KURU TOGA DIVE is the top model of uni’s Kuru Toga line: a capped 0.5 mm mechanical pencil whose lead turns to stay sharp and feeds itself, so you never click. Mitsubishi Pencil built it around the theme “dive into writing”.

Like the standard Kuru Toga, it turns the lead a little with each stroke so the point wears evenly. The DIVE adds automatic lead feed and a magnetic cap, and costs about ten times as much in Japan.

How does the DIVE feed lead without clicking?

It turns the rotation of the Kuru Toga engine into a small back-and-forth movement, and uses that to push lead out as you write. Mitsubishi Pencil says the energy comes from the act of writing itself.

The sleeve doesn’t drag on the paper, the maker says, so the feel isn’t spoiled. When you pull the cap off, the lead is already out, so you can start writing straight away.

Can you adjust the lead feed?

Yes, in five steps, to suit how hard you press and how soft your lead is. How fast lead wears differs by person and by grade, so a heavy hand or a soft 2B needs more lead per stroke than light writing with HB.

Which colours are there?

Mitsubishi Pencil lists five: Abyss Blue, Dense Green, Twilight Orange, Aurora Purple and Full Black. The first three became regular colours in March 2023 after two limited runs.

Colour Model JAN
Abyss Blue M5-5000 1P 4902778301470
Dense Green M5-5000 1P 4902778301487
Twilight Orange M5-5000 1P 4902778301494
Aurora Purple (colour-shifting) M5-5000 1P 4902778309537
Full Black (matte) M5-7000 1P 4902778351963

Aurora Purple changes colour with the viewing angle. Mitsubishi Pencil warns that the Full Black’s matte paint shows rubbing and wear more readily than other finishes.

What is a good Kuru Toga Dive alternative?

The closest Kuru Toga Dive alternative is the Pentel Orenz Nero, which also feeds lead automatically and comes in finer leads, but has no rotation or cap; the plain Kuru Toga is the budget way to get rotation.

Pencil Feed Rotation Lead sizes Price band
uni KURU TOGA DIVE Automatic, 5 settings Yes 0.5 mm $$$
Pentel Orenz Nero Automatic No 0.2, 0.3, 0.5 mm $$$
uni Kuru Toga Standard Click Yes 0.3, 0.5 mm $$

US prices for the DIVE vary a lot, because most copies are imported; some Amazon sellers ask far more than the Japanese list price. Our Kuru Toga vs Orenz comparison and best mechanical pencils cover cheaper options.

Who is the KURU TOGA DIVE for?

It suits people who write long stretches by hand, such as students taking lecture notes or writers drafting longhand, and who find clicking and turning the pencil distracting. Rotation keeps the line width even, and the automatic feed keeps the lead at the same length from the first word to the last.

It’s less suited to drafting with a ruler, because the lead keeps moving, and to anyone who wants 0.3 or 0.7 mm. If you lose caps easily, a click pencil such as the Orenz Nero is the safer choice.

Where is the KURU TOGA DIVE made?

In Japan, according to its Amazon US listing. Mitsubishi Pencil’s Japanese pages don’t state the country. The company is based in Tokyo; our Mitsubishi Pencil history explains how it is separate from the Mitsubishi group.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Kuru Toga Dive have a cap?

Because the lead is always out. Mitsubishi Pencil designed it so that taking the cap off leaves lead ready to write with no click, and the cap protects that lead the rest of the time.

What do the five settings on the DIVE change?

How much lead the pencil feeds as you write. Mitsubishi Pencil says to match the setting to your writing pressure and the lead grade, since soft or pressed lead wears faster.

What lead sizes does the KURU TOGA DIVE come in?

Only 0.5 mm, in every colour Mitsubishi Pencil lists. The standard Kuru Toga also comes in 0.3 mm.

Can you click the Dive like a normal mechanical pencil?

There's no need in normal use: Mitsubishi Pencil says the DIVE needs no clicking before or during writing, because the cap and the feed do the work.

Is the KURU TOGA DIVE heavy?

It's heavier than a standard Kuru Toga. The Amazon US listing gives 0.67 oz (19 g) with a 0.55 in (14 mm) maximum diameter.

Is the uni KURU TOGA DIVE made in Japan?

Yes, according to the Amazon US listing, which says it's crafted in Japan. Mitsubishi Pencil's Japanese pages don't state the country.

Kuru Toga Dive or Pentel Orenz Nero: which has the better auto feed?

They feed lead differently. The DIVE is capped, 0.5 mm only, rotates the lead and has five feed settings; the Orenz Nero is a click pencil in 0.2 to 0.5 mm that guards fine lead in a sliding pipe.
