## Product facts

| Product | Brand | Brand origin | Made in | Material | Released | Price range (typical US retail, October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zebra Tect 2way Mechanical Pencil, 0.5 mm, Black (MA41-BK) | Zebra (by Zebra Co., Ltd. (Tokyo); sold in the US by Zebra Pen Corporation) | Japan | Not stated | Resin barrel with a brushed metal grip (Bungu Store); Cult Pens describes the grip as aluminium | – | $$: $5–20 per pencil (multi-packs divided by the count) |

- Made in (Zebra Tect 2way Mechanical Pencil, 0.5 mm, Black (MA41-BK)): Not stated. Zebra's Japanese product page, the Amazon US listing and the retailers we read (Bungu Store, Cult Pens) don't state a country of manufacture. The JAN codes carry Japan's 49 GS1 prefix, which shows where the code was registered, not where the pencil is made.

## Key takeaways

- Zebra Japan lists the Tect 2way at 149.0 mm (5.9 in) long, 10.5 mm across and 23.2 g.
- Shake the barrel or press the button to advance lead; turning the center ring locks the shake mechanism.
- Locked, the shaker's weight stays low in the barrel, which Zebra says lowers the center of gravity.
- Zebra Japan lists ¥1,320 (about US$8.40), or ¥2,750 (about US$17) for the knurled Tect 2way RO.
- On Amazon US the black 0.5 mm MA41-BK had 1,269 ratings, averaging 4.5 stars, on October 23, 2026.

## What is the Zebra Tect 2way?

**It's a Zebra mechanical pencil that advances lead by shaking or by clicking, with a ring that switches the shaker off.** Zebra's Japanese page calls it a comfortable pencil whose lead comes out just by shaking the barrel, with a pipe tip that keeps the point in view.

It's one of the pencils Reddit's r/mechanicalpencils keeps recommending as a cheap step up from a basic click pencil, and the newer knurled Tect 2way RO shows up in many collection photos. The black 0.5 mm had 1,269 ratings on Amazon US on October 23, 2026.

Bungu Store describes a brushed metal grip and a resin upper body; Cult Pens calls the grip aluminium.

## How does the shake mechanism work?

**A weight inside the barrel slides when you shake the pencil and works the lead advance, so one flick feeds new lead.** You can also press the top button like any click pencil.

Zebra says the pipe tip keeps the point easy to see and writes firmly. Shake pencils suit long writing sessions, since you don't shift your grip to reach the button.

## What does the lock ring do?

**Turning the ring in the middle of the barrel locks the shaker, so lead doesn't creep out in a pocket or bag.** Zebra adds that when the shaker is locked, the weight stays fixed at the bottom of the barrel, giving a low center of gravity for steady writing.

![Zebra Tect 2way drawn to scale in its two modes: ring unlocked to shake, ring locked with the weight held low](https://stationerytimes.com/images/zebra-tect-2way-modes.svg)

*Clicking works in both modes; the ring only switches the shaker.*

In practice you leave it unlocked at your desk and lock it to carry. The click button works either way.

## Which version should you buy?

**The standard Tect 2way for value, the RO for a metal knurled grip.** Zebra Japan sells both at 149 mm:

| | Tect 2way | Tect 2way RO |
|---|---|---|
| Grip | Metal (brushed) | Knurled metal |
| Lower barrel | Standard | One piece; Zebra says the tip can't loosen |
| Weight | 23.2 g | 22.5 g |
| Japan price | ¥1,320 (about US$8.40) | ¥2,750 (about US$17) |

Zebra also makes a lighter Tect 2way Light, which had 938 ratings on Amazon US when we checked. For a pencil that protects its lead instead, see the [Zebra DelGuard](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/zebra-delguard/).

## How does it compare with other popular pencils?

**It's more than twice the weight of a plastic Kuru Toga or DelGuard, and the only one of the three that shakes.**

| | Tect 2way | [Uni Kuru Toga](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/uni-kuru-toga/) | [Zebra DelGuard](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/zebra-delguard/) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trick | Shake or click | Lead rotates | Lead breakage protection |
| Length | 149.0 mm | 142 mm (Standard) | 137.3 mm (Standard) |
| Weight | 23.2 g | About 10 g | 10 g |
| Price band | $$ | $$ | $$ |

## Where is the Tect 2way made?

**Zebra doesn't say.** Zebra is a Tokyo company and sells the Tect 2way in the US through Zebra Pen, but neither Zebra's Japanese page nor the retailers we read name a country of manufacture.

## How much does it cost?

**It's in our $$ band, $5–20 per pencil, in the US listings we checked in October 2026, such as Amazon US.** Zebra Japan lists ¥1,320 (about US$8.40), and the RO at ¥2,750 (about US$17).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a shaker mechanical pencil?

A pencil with a sliding weight inside the barrel: a quick shake moves the weight, which clicks the mechanism and advances the lead, so you don't have to move your fingers to the button.

### How do you turn off the shake function on the Tect 2way?

Turn the ring in the middle of the barrel to the lock position. Zebra says this stops the lead advancing by accident when you carry it, and holds the weight low in the barrel.

### What is the Zebra Tect 2way RO?

An upgraded version with a knurled metal grip, a one-piece lower barrel that doesn't loosen, and matte colors. Zebra Japan lists it at 22.5 g and ¥2,750 (about US$17), with the same 149 mm length.

### Does the Tect 2way come in 0.7 mm?

Zebra Japan lists 0.3 mm (MAS41) and 0.5 mm (MA41) on its product page. Walmart also lists a 0.7 mm Zebra Zensations Tect 2Way, so check the model number before you buy.

### Does the Tect 2way have an eraser?

Yes. Zebra Japan lists a replaceable eraser, refill type A, sold five to a pack.

### Is the Zebra Tect 2way made in the USA?

No. It's a Japanese Zebra design sold through Zebra Pen in the US; neither Zebra nor the retailers we read state where it's manufactured.
