What is the CEO writing collection?
It’s our shortlist of premium mechanical pencils of the kind sold as executive gifts, not a list of what any CEO uses. The idea started with a rumor that San Francisco CEOs are buying fancy pencils. We found no evidence for it; our research article on luxury mechanical pencils and tech executives explains what we did find. This page gathers the pencils that keep coming up at the premium end, with maker prices checked on November 3, 2026.
How do the seven pencils compare?
The luxury tier runs from US$119 to US$560; the everyday metal pencils cost a fraction.

Which pencil suits which buyer?
Match the pencil to the reason you are buying it.
- A desk-set gift: the Montblanc Meisterstück Classique, which Luxe Digital pitches as a pencil for someone who already owns a Meisterstück; Montblanc offers free personalization.
- A gift for a designer or architect: the Caran d’Ache Ecridor, which can be engraved for an extra US$20 on each pen.
- A machined-metal enthusiast: the Tactile Turn Pencil, in four metals at one price, with a lifetime warranty.
- Fine engraving and a gift box: the Graf von Faber-Castell Guilloche, which includes a wood-lined box.
- Thick-lead sketching: the Caran d’Ache Fixpencil, a 2 mm or 3 mm lead holder with a built-in sharpener.
- An everyday metal pencil on a budget: the rOtring 800 or Kaweco Special.
Do luxury pencils write better?
Not by anything we can measure from maker pages. The pricier pencils differ in materials, engraving and presentation; most use common lead sizes. A Reddit analysis of 250 mechanical-pencil reviews ranks Pentel first with 120 mentions and gives Montblanc and Graf von Faber-Castell one each, so enthusiasts rarely discuss the luxury tier. For everyday picks see our best mechanical pencils.
How much do they cost?
Five of the seven sit in our $$$$ band (over $75) and two in $$$ ($20–75). Caran d’Ache’s US shop showed all its pencils as out of stock on November 3, 2026, so check availability before you buy. Graf von Faber-Castell shows no price on its own site; Luxe Digital lists the Guilloche Black at US$320.
Where are they made?
Caran d’Ache lists Swiss Made, Kaweco assembles in Nuremberg, and the rOtring 800 is listed as made in Japan. Tactile Turn is in Dallas but its pencil page doesn’t state where the pencil is made, and Montblanc and Graf von Faber-Castell don’t state it on their pencil pages.
