What is the Midori MD Letter Pad?
It is Midori’s letter-writing pad of cream MD Paper, cut to its own 210 × 168 mm size with wide, light grey lines. Midori says a letter carries not only words but handwriting, pen pressure and the feel of the paper, and designed the pad around that.
The paper is the same cream MD Paper as the Midori MD Notebook A5 and the Midori MD Paper Pad, which Midori says resists bleeding and bleed-through and glides smoothly.

Why is the MD Letter Pad 210 × 168 mm?
Midori chose an original size for writing comfort instead of standard B5. It says the wide lines match the average amount Japanese writers put on a line, so you can write in a relaxed hand, and that the generous margins make a finished letter look good.
For US writers, the sheet is a little wider than A5 (148 mm) and much smaller than Letter (8.5 × 11 in), so a page fills quickly and a one-sheet note still looks complete.
How should you lay out a letter on it?
Start below the top margin, keep to the light grey lines and leave the generous side margins clear, as Midori intends. Midori describes the white space around the ruling as part of the design, so a finished letter looks balanced on the sheet.
On the horizontal pad, 15 lines at 9.5 mm hold a short letter on one side; turn the sheet over or add a second sheet for longer news. Midori says the cream tone is easy on the eyes.
Horizontal or vertical: which should you choose?
Choose horizontal ruled for English and other left-to-right writing; vertical ruled is for Japanese written top to bottom. The horizontal pad gives 15 lines at 9.5 mm, wider than US college ruling of 7.1 mm, so it suits medium and broad nibs and larger handwriting.
The vertical pad’s lines break at two points, which Midori designed as guides for folding the sheet neatly in three for an envelope.
Is MD Paper good for fountain pen letters?
Midori designs MD Paper to resist bleeding and bleed-through, and says the cream tone shows black and blue-black inks beautifully. It is the same 80 g/m² sheet used in Midori’s MD notebooks.
We haven’t tested the letter pad ourselves. For more fountain-pen papers, see our Tomoe River paper guide (much thinner) and the Clairefontaine Triomphe pad, another classic letter paper. For all-cotton letter paper, see the Original Crown Mill Pure Cotton pad.
What about the Cotton version and envelopes?
Midori also makes an MD Letter Pad Cotton and matching envelopes in both papers. The Cotton pad uses soft white 75 g/m² MD Paper Cotton with 20% cotton pulp, at ¥660 (about US$4.20), in the same size and rulings. The Midori MD Notebook Cotton A5 uses the same cotton paper.
For colour, Clairefontaine Pollen C6 envelopes come in 23 shades; a letter folded in four fits. For short notes handed over in person, Midori’s Mogumogu Letter is a mini set with sticker seals.
Where is the Midori MD Letter Pad made?
Midori’s Japanese MD PRODUCT store lists the MD Letter Pad as made in Japan. Midori is a brand of Designphil Inc. in Tokyo, which has developed MD Paper since the 1960s.
