What is the Hahnemühle Harmony block?

It is a block of 12 sheets of 300 g/m² (140 lb) watercolor paper, glued on all four sides so each sheet stays flat while you paint. Hahnemühle, the German paper maker, calls Harmony “the naturally white paper for all wet techniques”.

Hahnemühle’s German site says the paper is sized on the surface, so colors sit on top and stay bright, wet paint can be corrected and lifted, and masking fluid comes off without residue. It sells Harmony in matt (cold press), rough and satin (hot press) finishes.

How do you use a watercolor block?

Paint on the top sheet while it is still glued down, let it dry, then free it with a knife slid into the small unglued gap in the edge. St. Louis Art Supply notes that the four glued sides keep the sheet from warping while wet.

Taking the sheet off wet risks tearing it and lets it cockle as it dries. The next sheet is already glued in place underneath.

How does Harmony compare to other 140 lb papers?

Harmony costs about the same as a student pad but comes as a block, while cotton blocks such as Arches cost much more.

Figures for the other papers come from our guides to them. St. Louis Art Supply suggests cellulose sheets like Harmony for pen-and-paint, repeated lifting and heavy erasing, and softer cotton papers for those who want more absorbency.

How much does it cost?

The 9 × 12 in cold-press block sits in our $$ band ($5–20 per block) at the US stores we checked in October 2026. Larger blocks cost more; the 100% cotton Arches block sits a band higher, in $$$.

Who makes Harmony, and where is it made?

Hahnemühle, a German paper maker, makes it, and St. Louis Art Supply lists the block as made in Germany. Hahnemühle says it was founded as a paper mill in 1584 in the Solling hills of southern Lower Saxony, where papermaker Merten Spieß built the first mill.
