Best Stationery Stores in Tokyo: 10 Shops to Visit

Compiled from 31 sources; we haven't tested these stores in person ourselves yet. How we research

Quick answer

Start with Ginza Itoya (2-7-15 Ginza), Kakimori in Kuramae (1-6-2 Misuji) and Bungubox in Jimbocho (1-2-3 Kanda-Sarugakucho). They come first because each offers something you can't get at home: about 2,000 fountain pens on one floor, notebooks and inks made to order, and a pen shop's own inks to test at its writing desks.

How did we choose these stores?

We picked shops that focus on stationery, pens or paper and were open on October 25, 2026, then weighed what each one stocks and does. Our criteria:

  • A dedicated focus on stationery, pens or paper; Hands is the one variety store, for its stationery floor.
  • Something you can only do there, such as Kakimori’s order-made notebooks, Takeo’s single sheets of fine paper or the Traveler’s Factory repair service.
  • Pens and paper to try, such as Bungubox’s two writing desks and Itoya’s testers for every pencil and colored pencil.
  • Standing in the stationery community, from Time Out Tokyo’s coverage cited below.
  • Open now, confirmed on each store’s own site on October 25, 2026.

We compiled this from the stores’ own websites and that coverage; we have not visited them for this guide, and we do not rate them.

Why is each store on the list?

Each store earns its place with a specific range or service, not general gift stock.

  • Ginza Itoya (Ginza): about 2,000 fountain pens, a Pen Care room, 1,000+ papers and an in-store post box for your cards.
  • Maruzen Marunouchi (Tokyo Station): the historic bookseller, which has imported Onoto pens since the Meiji era, sells its own Onoto-model pens by Tokyo Station.
  • Haibara (Nihonbashi): washi letter sets and gampi paper from a shop founded in 1806 that does not ship overseas.
  • Kakimori (Kuramae): binds a notebook from more than 60 covers and 30 papers while you wait, with Inkstand’s ink mixing upstairs.
  • Bungubox (Jimbocho): its own limited-edition fountain pens and inks, and two writing desks to test them.
  • Takeo Mihoncho Honten (Jimbocho): the paper merchant’s shop, selling about 2,700 papers by the A4 sheet.
  • Tobichi Tokyo (Jimbocho): Hobonichi’s own shop, with Hobonichi Techo planners in English and Japanese editions.
  • Hands Shibuya: a whole floor of stationery, from sealing wax to hanko seals, plus a pen engraving counter.
  • Pen Boutique Shosaikan (Aoyama): fountain pens and a cafe, with antique stationery beside current pens.
  • Traveler’s Factory Nakameguro: the TRAVELER’S notebook maker’s shop, with Factory-only refills and an in-store repair service.

Which Tokyo stores are best for fountain pens and ink?

G.Itoya’s 3rd floor is the largest single stop: Itoya lists about 2,000 fountain pens, including maki-e pens and limited editions, plus inks and a Pen Care room for nib adjustment.

For inks, Kakimori’s Inkstand mixes a pigment ink to your color from 14 base inks: 45 minutes of mixing, then about an hour while staff bottle it. The first bottle is ¥5,500 (about US$35) and each extra one ¥3,000 (about US$19), and Inkstand keeps your recipe for three years.

Bungubox sells its own inks in heel-shaped bottles and limited-edition pens, with two writing desks for testing. Pen Boutique Shosaikan in Aoyama carries brands from Aurora to Visconti; book a visit first. Compare nibs in our Japanese pens guide before you go.

Which Tokyo stores are best for paper and notebooks?

Takeo Mihoncho Honten in Jimbocho stocks about 2,700 fine papers from about 300 brands, sold by the A4 sheet, according to Takeo. It is open weekdays only, 11 am to 6 pm.

For notebooks, Kakimori binds yours from its covers and papers, with testers for each paper, and Itoya’s Note Couture service does the same in Ginza. Haibara in Nihonbashi has sold washi since 1806; Time Out Tokyo points to its letter sets, notebooks and fans.

Traveler’s Factory sells Factory-only refills in colored kraft and black paper, and on the same Jimbocho block as Takeo, Tobichi Tokyo stocks Hobonichi Techo planners. See our Japanese notebooks, TRAVELER’S notebook system and Hobonichi lineup guides.

How do you plan a stationery day in Tokyo?

Group the shops into five neighborhood clusters, and check each store’s days off first.

  1. Ginza and Tokyo Station: Itoya, Maruzen, Traveler’s Factory Station (inside Tokyo Station) and Haibara in Nihonbashi are all within about 1.5 km (1 mile).
  2. Jimbocho on a weekday: Takeo closes at weekends, and Bungubox closes on Wednesdays. Tobichi is on Takeo’s block.
  3. Kuramae: Kakimori opens Tuesday to Sunday; book Inkstand ahead.
  4. Shibuya and Aoyama: Hands, then Shibuya Loft nearby in Udagawacho, then Shosaikan by appointment.
  5. Nakameguro: Traveler’s Factory opens at noon and closes on Tuesdays.

How does tax-free shopping work in Tokyo?

For purchases from November 1, 2026, Japan switches to a refund method: you pay the tax-inclusive price, then get the consumption tax back after a customs check when you leave Japan, per the Japan Tourism Agency. Show your passport in the shop; purchases must total ¥5,000 (about US$32) or more, before tax, per store per day.

At the airport, scan your passport at a tax-free kiosk before you check your bags, within 90 days of purchase, and keep every item from each receipt with you. Hands Shibuya, Shibuya Loft and Tobichi Tokyo all list tax-free procedures; ask at other shops.

Which Tokyo stationery stores did we leave out?

We left out Sekaido, the Shinjuku art supply store, because its website still showed only a maintenance page when we rechecked on October 25, 2026, and 36 Sublo in Kichijoji, because its site still would not load when we tried again that day. Both may well be open; check before you go.

We also left out Bumpodo in Jimbocho, which Time Out Tokyo describes as three floors of stationery and art supplies, because its site failed a security-certificate check when we tried it on October 25, 2026, so we couldn’t confirm its address or hours there. Back home, our Japanese stationery guide shows where to buy Japanese stationery in the US. When is the Tokyo International Pen Show?

The 2026 Tokyo International Pen Show runs November 21–23 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Trade Center, Hamamatsucho building, floors 3 to 5, per its site. Bungubox is among the exhibitors; tickets and hours are in our 2026 pen show calendar.
