How did we choose these stores?
We picked shops that focus on stationery, pens or art supplies and were open on October 24, 2026, then weighed what each one stocks and does. Our criteria:
- A dedicated focus on stationery, pens or art supplies, not general gifts or books alone.
- The range of brands each store lists on its own site, such as Yoseka’s 2027 planners or Hightide’s own HIGHTIDE, Penco and Nähe lines.
- Specialist services, such as Fountain Pen Hospital’s Back Room of limited-edition and pre-owned pens, the Goods for the Study pen wall and Yoseka’s tester table.
- Standing in the pen and stationery community, from the coverage cited below: Unsharpen, Inkstable and I Love the Upper West Side.
- Open now, confirmed on each store’s own site on October 24, 2026.
We compiled this from the stores’ own websites and that coverage. We have not visited them in person for this guide, and we do not rate them. Hours change, so check before you go.
Why is each store on the list?
Each store earns its place with a specific range or service, not general gift stock.
- Kinokuniya New York (Midtown): Kinokuniya USA says it sells “books, magazines, and stationery from Japan”, and Unsharpen calls this branch excellent for reasonably priced Japanese pens and pencils.
- Goods for the Study, Nolita: the original shop, open since 2013, leans toward pens, per Unsharpen, and opens daily.
- Goods for the Study, West Village: Unsharpen rates its notebook and journal selection the best in the city.
- Goods for the Study, Upper West Side: opened inside the Ansonia in January 2025 and sells both pens and paper; it is the one shop on our list north of Midtown.
- Fountain Pen Hospital (Tribeca): a fountain pen specialist since 1946, per its site, with new pens “from a few dollars to thousands” and a Back Room of limited-edition and pre-owned pens updated every Thursday.
- Hightide Store NYC (Greenwich Village): the Fukuoka maker’s own shop, opened December 19, 2025, for its HIGHTIDE, Penco, Nähe and New Retro lines.
- Niconeco Zakkaya (East Village): Japanese zakka and stationery, open on Sundays, with a second, larger shop, Loaf on Paper, in Williamsburg.
- MUJI Fifth Avenue (Midtown): MUJI’s own gel pens, notebooks and pen storage, a short walk from Kinokuniya by Bryant Park.
- Blick Art Materials, SoHo: art supplies on the downtown crawl at 443 Broadway, one of six Blick stores in the city.
- Yoseka Stationery (Greenpoint): mixes Japanese and Taiwanese brands around a central tester table and lists 2027 Hobonichi, Midori, PLOTTER, TRAVELER’S and Kokuyo Jibun Techo planners.
Which NYC stores are best for fountain pens?
Fountain Pen Hospital at 10 Warren Street is the city’s dedicated fountain pen shop; it says it has been in Manhattan since 1946. Its site describes new pens “from a few dollars to thousands”, plus inks, refills, cases and notebooks, and a Back Room of limited-edition and pre-owned pens updated every Thursday.
Pen magazine Inkstable lists Montblanc, Montegrappa, Aurora, Visconti, Graf von Faber-Castell and Caran d’Ache among its brands. It opens Monday to Friday only, 9 am to 5 pm.
For cheaper fountain pens, Kinokuniya USA has a fountain pen section in its online shop (store stock varies), and Curbed (as quoted by I Love the Upper West Side) singled out the Kaweco Sport fountain pens on the Goods for the Study pen wall. Which NYC stores are best for Japanese stationery?
Kinokuniya New York, at 1073 Avenue of the Americas, is the biggest Japanese stop: Kinokuniya USA says it sells “books, magazines, and stationery from Japan”. Pen blog Unsharpen calls this branch excellent for reasonably priced Japanese stationery, especially pens and pencils.
Three smaller shops add depth. Hightide Store NYC, opened on December 19, 2025, is the Fukuoka maker’s own shop for its HIGHTIDE, Penco, Nähe and New Retro lines.
Niconeco Zakkaya in the East Village sells Japanese zakka and stationery. Yoseka Stationery in Greenpoint, started by a family with a stationery business in Taiwan, mixes Japanese and Taiwanese brands around a central tester table, as its site describes.

Which NYC stores are best for paper and notebooks?
Goods for the Study’s West Village shop at 50 West 8th Street has the city’s best selection of notebooks and journals, according to Unsharpen. The Nolita shop leans toward pens, and the Upper West Side shop in the Ansonia sells both.
For planners, Yoseka’s site lists 2027 Hobonichi, Midori, PLOTTER, TRAVELER’S and Kokuyo Jibun Techo planners. Compare them first in our 2027 planners and Japanese notebooks guides.
Where should you buy art supplies in NYC?
Blick Art Materials is the easiest choice: its store list shows SoHo (443 Broadway), 650 6th Avenue, Union Square (111 4th Avenue), Harlem and two Brooklyn stores. Kinokuniya and Yoseka also carry brush pens and markers, but neither is an art supply store.
How do you plan a stationery crawl in NYC?
Do downtown on a weekday, because Fountain Pen Hospital closes at 5 pm and all weekend. Start at Warren Street, then go north through SoHo (Blick, and MUJI at 455 Broadway) to Goods for the Study on Mulberry Street, Hightide on LaGuardia Place, Goods for the Study on West 8th Street and Niconeco on East 10th Street.
Midtown is a short second stop: Kinokuniya and MUJI Fifth Avenue both sit in the Bryant Park area. Save Yoseka in Greenpoint for Wednesday to Sunday; Niconeco’s second shop, Loaf on Paper, is in Williamsburg at 64 Grand Street.
Which NYC stationery stores have closed?
CW Pencil Enterprise closed its Orchard Street shop in October 2021, and Arthur Brown & Bro., the pen shop near Fifth Avenue, closed in 2013. CW Pencil’s website is now an archive, and Arthur Brown’s old domain is a parked page.
We also left out stores we could not confirm on October 24, 2026, including LAMY’s former SoHo shop at 452 West Broadway and Blick’s old Bond Street store, which no longer appears in Blick’s list.
When is the next pen show in New York?
