What is the Midori Paintable Rotating Date Stamp?

It’s a rotating rubber-band date stamp for journals and planners: you turn the bands to set the month and day, pick a symbol, and stamp, with the included ink pad sitting inside the body. The “Paintable” name means the print is made to be colored in afterward.

Midori, the Tokyo stationery brand of Designphil Inc., says its Paintable rotating design stamps were first released in 2020, and it announced this date stamp on May 25, 2022. It sits in that range alongside monthly and list stamps, and JetPens and Goldspot carry several designs in the US.

At 60 mm (2.4 in) wide, the print sits comfortably in the daily page of an A6 planner such as the Hobonichi Techo Original.

How does the rotating date stamp work?

Turn the bands to the month and day, turn the symbol dial to the mark you want, then stamp. The bands are rubber loops with the characters on them, and the ink pad set inside the body inks them, so the bottom of the stamp prints whatever is set. The picture around the outside is fixed.

Midori says the 12 symbols cover weather, events, anniversaries, birthdays, travel, records, moods and checks. Goldspot says the Cat version’s symbols include stretching, sitting and sleeping cats and paw prints. Midori suggests stamping a few test prints first and not pressing too hard, which thickens the lines.

Does it print the year?

No: it has month and day bands plus a symbol dial, but no year band. If you need the year, write it in.

Midori’s announcement says the 12-symbol dial can be left blank so you can add your own text, such as the year or “Best before”.

What does “Paintable” mean?

It means the stamp uses oil-pigment-based ink, so you can color over the print with water-based markers without the black lines bleeding. Midori says so, and also warns that drying can be slower, and bleeding or show-through possible, on some papers.

That makes it a good partner for water-based highlighters such as the Zebra Mildliner or a brush pen such as the Tombow Dual Brush Pen. We haven’t yet tested alcohol markers or watercolor over it.

Which design should you choose?

Choose by the picture, because every version prints the date and 12 symbols the same way. Midori makes six designs, all at ¥3,520 (about US$22) in Japan:

Design Item number Style
Cat 35452006 Full picture
Forest Animal 35453006 Full picture: rabbit, bird and fox
Frame 35454006 Full picture: a decorative border
Flower 35455006 Room to write below the picture
Stationery 35456006 Fountain pen and ink; room to write above and below
Animal Speech Bubble 35457006 Lion and elephant; room to write above and below

US retailers such as Goldspot carry the Cat, Forest Animals, Flowers and Animal Speech Bubbles designs; all sit in the same $20–75 band at the US shops we checked.

How does it compare with other planner stamps?

It’s the only one of these that changes the date for you. A self-inking stamp like the Trodat Printy 4912 prints one fixed text with no pad, while Midori’s pre-inked Paintable Stamp Half Size prints one fixed layout, such as a time tracker, from ink held in the stamp itself.

If you’d rather not ink anything, date-frame stickers do a similar job in a planner.

Where is it made?

Midori’s Japanese online store gives China as the country of origin for every design we checked. That covers the Flower, Frame, Stationery, Animal Speech Bubble and Forest Animal stamps.

Midori is a Japanese brand of Designphil Inc., based in Tokyo.
