Quick answer

LAMY began in 1930, when C. Josef Lamy founded the Orthos fountain-pen factory in Heidelberg. The LAMY brand followed with the LAMY 27 in 1952, the design-led LAMY 2000 by Gerd A. Müller in 1966 and the safari in 1980. Since 2024 the Heidelberg company has belonged to Japan's Mitsubishi Pencil.

Seven dates in LAMY's history, from the Orthos factory of 1930 to Mitsubishi Pencil's purchase in 2024.

Key takeaways

  • C. Josef Lamy, formerly export manager for an American pen maker, founded the Orthos fountain-pen factory in Heidelberg in 1930; by 1939 it made over 200,000 Orthos and Artus pens a year.
  • LAMY dates its brand to the 1952 LAMY 27 with its Tintomatik feed, and moved to its present Heidelberg-Wieblingen site in 1957.
  • The 1966 LAMY 2000, designed by former Braun designer Gerd A. Müller (born 1932), set the plain Bauhaus-style look every later LAMY follows.
  • The safari was shown at the Frankfurt fair in 1980 as a pen for 10- to 15-year-olds, developed with Prof. Bernt Spiegel's group and designer Wolfgang Fabian.
  • Mitsubishi Pencil bought 100% of C. Josef Lamy GmbH from Vera and Markus Lamy in 2024 for 21,881 million yen (about US$138 million); LAMY still makes its pens only in Heidelberg.

LAMY is one of the few big pen brands that has only ever had one factory town. It started as a small Heidelberg fountain-pen maker under another name, became a design brand with one pen in 1966, and in 2024 was sold by the Lamy family to a Japanese company. Dates below come from LAMY’s German company history and Mitsubishi Pencil’s Japanese filings.

What is the history of LAMY pens?

LAMY pens go back to 1930, when C. Josef Lamy founded the Orthos fountain-pen factory in Heidelberg; the LAMY brand followed in 1952, the LAMY 2000 in 1966 and the safari in 1980, and since 2024 the company has belonged to Mitsubishi Pencil. LAMY’s German history calls the 1966 launch of the LAMY 2000 “certainly the most important milestone” on the way from a small Heidelberg pen factory to an international brand.

The company is still C. Josef Lamy GmbH, still based in Heidelberg, and still makes its pens only there. Its German site says the brand is sold in more than 80 countries through over 15,600 outlets, including about 200 single-brand stores.

Who was C. Josef Lamy?

The founder: an export manager and branch head for an American pen maker who went into business for himself in 1930. LAMY’s timeline doesn’t name his former employer. His first factory sold pens as Orthos and Artus, and by the start of the Second World War in 1939 it was making more than 200,000 fountain pens a year.

The LAMY name arrived in 1952 on the LAMY 27, a streamlined fountain pen whose “Tintomatik” feed was meant to keep ink flowing evenly. LAMY calls it the birth of the LAMY brand and the company’s breakthrough. Five years later the firm moved to Heidelberg-Wieblingen, where it still is.

Why does the LAMY 2000 matter so much?

Because LAMY treats 1966, the year of the LAMY 2000, as the birth of “LAMY Design”, the plain, functional look of every LAMY since. LAMY’s history says Dr. Manfred Lamy, then the company’s young head of marketing, found his model in Bauhaus ideas and in companies such as Braun and Olivetti.

The pen was drawn by Gerd A. Müller, who LAMY says was born in 1932, studied at the Werkkunstschule Wiesbaden and worked as a Braun designer from 1955 to 1960. It did without ornament and paired brushed stainless steel with Makrolon polycarbonate, a combination LAMY calls a complete novelty in the mid-1960s. LAMY still assembles it largely by hand; our LAMY 2000 guide covers the pen as sold today.

In 2013 LAMY added an all-stainless-steel version of the LAMY 2000. Manfred Lamy became sole managing director in 1973, and LAMY’s history credits him with turning the independent firm into an international brand.

Where did the LAMY safari come from?

From a 1980 project to design a fountain pen for 10- to 15-year-olds, a group LAMY says it had never targeted before. LAMY says the safari came out of research into young people’s needs by the Entwicklungsgruppe Mannheim under Prof. Bernt Spiegel, with the designer Wolfgang Fabian, and that it soon found adult fans as well.

LAMY’s timeline adds that “nobody suspected” in 1980 that it would become the best-selling fountain pen in the world. That is LAMY’s own claim; we found no independent sales figures to check it. The safari’s aluminum sibling is in our LAMY AL-star guide, and both take the same LAMY T10 cartridges or Z28 converter, because LAMY uses its own cartridge size.

How much of a LAMY is made in Heidelberg?

Nearly all of it: LAMY says about 95% of its production steps happen in house in Heidelberg, including most machine parts, all plastic parts and its ink cartridges. It built that in stages, with an injection-molding hall in 1985 that brought tool-making, nibs, refills and cartridges in house, and its own ink production from 1989; our LAMY T52 ink guide covers one result.

LAMY also says about three quarters of the manufacturing time is handwork, such as grinding and polishing nibs and test-writing finished fountain pens. Our how a fountain-pen nib is made story explains those steps in general.

Who owns LAMY now?

Mitsubishi Pencil Co., Ltd., the Tokyo maker of uni and uni-ball, which bought 100% of C. Josef Lamy GmbH from Vera Lamy and Markus Lamy, who each held 50%. Mitsubishi Pencil announced the deal on February 29, 2024, and its half-year report puts the change of shares on March 15, 2024, for 21,881 million yen (about US$138 million) in cash.

LAMY’s German site now says the Heidelberg company has belonged to Mitsubishi Pencil, founded in 1887, since February 2024, while stressing its single production site in Heidelberg. The reasons for the deal, the goodwill figures and the first joint products are in our why Mitsubishi Pencil bought LAMY story, and the wider picture is in who owns which stationery brands.

Which LAMY pens are the classics?

By LAMY’s own history, three: the LAMY 2000 (1966), the safari (1980) and, for ballpoints, the LAMY exact (1964). LAMY’s timeline also singles out later design-prize winners such as the spirit, pico and noto, and the scribble pencil by Hannes Wettstein from 2000.

For a first fountain pen, the safari is one of the picks in our best fountain pens for beginners roundup, and the LAMY studio is the brand’s metal-bodied step up. Among today’s steel ballpoints, the slim LAMY logo is one of LAMY’s most-reviewed pens on Amazon US.
