# TWSBI History: From Taiwan OEM to Piston-Filler Brand

> TWSBI is the pen brand of TaShin Precision, a Taiwanese maker that spent more than 50 years producing plastic and metal parts and pens for other brands before selling under its own name. Taiwanese sources date the brand to 2009 and the Diamond 530. The name comes from 三文堂, San Wen Tang, and no larger group owns it.

## Key takeaways

- TWSBI says TaShin Precision worked for more than 50 years as an OEM maker for global brands, from toy Lego parts to high-end pens, before launching its own brand.
- Taiwan's Eslite bookstore chain says the San Wen Tang pen company began developing its own brand in 2009; US retailer Dromgoole's names the Diamond 530 as the first pen.
- The name reverses the initials of San Wen Tong, 'Hall of Three Cultures', and adds Bi, Chinese for writing instrument: T-W-S plus Bi.
- The ECO followed in 2015, according to Goldspot, and TWSBI's first cartridge/converter pen, the SWIPE, went on sale on July 15, 2021.
- Chinese Wikipedia, citing Taiwan's company register, names a father and son surnamed Wang as founders and dates Ta Shin Precision Industrial to 1969; we couldn't check the register.

TWSBI makes the clear piston-filling pens that many people buy as their second fountain pen. Its story is short as a brand and long as a factory, and TWSBI publishes little of it. Below we use the company's own page, Taiwanese sources in Chinese, translated by us, and US retailers, and we say which is which.

## What is the history of TWSBI?

**TWSBI is the own brand of TaShin Precision, a Taiwanese manufacturer that made plastic and metal parts and pens for other companies for more than 50 years before launching TWSBI around 2009.** TWSBI's about page says TaShin's early products ranged from toy Lego parts to high-end writing instruments.

Taiwan's Eslite bookstore chain, which sells the pens, puts the brand's start in 2009 in Chinese: the San Wen Tang pen company "used long-accumulated OEM production skills to develop its own brand from 2009". TWSBI itself doesn't give a launch year.

## TWSBI timeline: 1969 to 2021

**TWSBI's dated history is short: one year for its maker, then a handful of pen launches.** The source column says where each comes from; the 1969 date and the award are second-hand.

|---|---|---|
| 1969 | Ta Shin Precision Industrial Co., Ltd. founded | Chinese Wikipedia, citing the company register |

## Who makes TWSBI pens?

**TWSBI pens are made by TaShin Precision in Taiwan, the company TWSBI's own site names as its maker.** It says TaShin has more than 50 years of experience making things from plastics and metals, and that this know-how goes into every TWSBI product.

Chinese Wikipedia gives fuller details from Taiwan's company register. It names two companies at neighboring addresses in Zhonghe, New Taipei City: Ta Shin Precision Industrial Co., Ltd. (太幸精密工業), founded in 1969, and TWSBI Co., Ltd. (三文堂筆業), founded in 2009 by a father and son, 王仁森 and 王成昌. The register was offline when we tried it, so we couldn't confirm those entries.

Our guides list TaShin Precision as the maker of every TWSBI pen we cover, including the [ECO](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/twsbi-eco/), the [Diamond 580](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/twsbi-diamond-580/) and the [GO](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/twsbi-go/).

## What does the name TWSBI mean?

**TWSBI comes from the Chinese name San Wen Tong, 三文堂, the "Hall of Three Cultures": its initials reversed give TWS, and Bi, Chinese for writing instrument, completes it.** TWSBI's page says the character wen means language and culture.

The phrase also recalls the Hall of the Three Rare Treasures, which the Qianlong Emperor set up to keep three masterpieces of Chinese calligraphy. Chinese Wikipedia names that room as the Sanxitang in the Forbidden City's Hall of Mental Cultivation. A popular second reading, "TW's Bi", Taiwan's pen, is not the company's explanation.

## Why does TWSBI make piston-filling pens?

**TWSBI's pens are nearly all piston or vacuum fillers because its founder took advice from Taiwanese pen users, according to an interview Chinese Wikipedia cites.** The owner of the Taiwanese pen shop Tylee (小品雅集), 李台營, says the founder, Mr. Wang, asked for opinions on Taiwan's main pen forum, and that he urged him to drop converter pens and try a piston filler, lending a Pelikan M800 as a reference.

The first result, the Diamond 530, had a clear faceted body and a built-in piston. Chinese Wikipedia says it won a red dot product design award in 2010, citing a 2011 Taiwanese news report.

The early Diamonds had a flaw. Chinese Wikipedia and Dromgoole's both say the 530 and 540 grip sections could crack; TWSBI sent replacements, and the [Diamond 580](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/twsbi-diamond-580/) added a metal ring there. Its nib unit unscrews for swapping, and it is still the core of the range.

## How did the TWSBI range grow?

**After the Diamond came a vacuum filler, a cheaper piston pen and, in 2021, a cartridge pen.** The [VAC700R](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/twsbi-vac700r/) is the redesign of the Vac 700, which The Gentleman Stationer says first sold around 2012 and 2013, and the [Vac20A](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/twsbi-vac20a-ink-bottle/) bottle lets it fill completely.

The [TWSBI ECO](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/twsbi-eco/) brought the piston filler to a lower price in 2015, according to Goldspot. Dromgoole's calls it the starter pen it recommends most; our [ECO vs LAMY safari](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/twsbi-eco-vs-lamy-safari/) comparison and [best fountain pens for beginners](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/best-fountain-pens-for-beginners/) roundup show why.

The [GO](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/twsbi-go/) uses a spring-loaded plunger. The [SWIPE](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/twsbi-swipe/), on TWSBI's US store from July 15, 2021, was the company's first cartridge/converter pen, explained in our [converters guide](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/fountain-pen-converters-explained/).

## Who owns TWSBI today?

**TWSBI is owned by its maker, the Taiwanese manufacturer TaShin Precision, and no larger group or investor owns it.** TWSBI's site presents the brand as TaShin's own, and we found no record of an outside owner. Our [who owns which stationery brands](https://stationerytimes.com/stories/who-owns-which-stationery-brands/) story lists it with the other makers.

## What couldn't we confirm?

**We couldn't read Taiwan's company register, which was down for maintenance when we checked, so the founders' names, the 1969 and 2009 company dates and the Montesa name rest on Chinese Wikipedia's summary of it.** TWSBI's own site gives only "50 plus years" of OEM work.

TWSBI doesn't publish launch dates for its models; the years above come from retailers and the press. We also couldn't find the red dot record for the Diamond 530 or the 2011 news report Chinese Wikipedia cites.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does TWSBI stand for?

TWSBI says the name comes from San Wen Tong, written 三文堂, the 'Hall of Three Cultures'. Its initials reversed give TWS, and Bi, Chinese for writing instrument, completes the name. A popular alternative reading, 'Taiwan's pen', is not the company's own.

### When did TWSBI start making fountain pens?

As its own brand, in 2009, according to Taiwan's Eslite and the US retailer Dromgoole's, which names the Diamond 530 as the first TWSBI pen. Its maker, TaShin Precision, had made pens and parts for other brands for decades before that.

### Is TWSBI a Chinese company?

No, it is Taiwanese. TWSBI's maker, TaShin Precision, is based in Taiwan, and Chinese Wikipedia, citing the Taiwanese company register, places both TWSBI's company and Ta Shin Precision Industrial in Zhonghe, New Taipei City.

### Who owns TWSBI?

TaShin Precision, the Taiwanese manufacturer that created the brand. TWSBI's site describes it as TaShin's own brand after decades of OEM work, and we found no larger group or investor that owns it.

### Did TWSBI make pens for other brands?

Yes, by its own account: TWSBI says TaShin Precision was an OEM manufacturer for different global brands for more than 50 years. It doesn't name those brands, and neither do we.

### Why are TWSBI pens piston fillers?

Chinese Wikipedia cites the owner of the Taiwanese pen shop Tylee (小品雅集), 李台營, who says that when TWSBI's founder asked Taiwanese pen users for advice, he suggested a piston filler instead of a converter pen. Almost every TWSBI fills from a bottle; the SWIPE of 2021 was its first cartridge/converter pen.

### Why did early TWSBI Diamond pens crack?

Chinese Wikipedia says the grip section of the Diamond 530 and 540 tended to crack and that TWSBI sent replacement parts; the Diamond 580 added a metal ring there. Dromgoole's also says TWSBI reworked the design after early hairline cracks.
