## What is the Zebra M-301?

**It is Zebra's stainless steel mechanical pencil: a short, light pencil with a metal barrel and clip, made to last longer than an all-plastic school pencil.** Zebra Pen calls it the original stainless steel mechanical pencil and "America's number one steel mechanical pencil."

It is the pencil partner of the [Zebra F-301](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/zebra-f-301/) ballpoint in Zebra's Steel 3-Series, and shares its look. On Amazon US the 0.5 mm 2-pack had 6,989 ratings and ranked #71 in Mechanical Pencils on October 22, 2026.

*The M-301 is about 12 mm shorter than a P205.*

## Why is the M-301 so popular?

**It is cheap, light and tough, with a metal barrel that survives backpacks and desk drawers.** Zebra highlights three things: the stainless steel barrel, the metal clip that keeps it in place, and the shorter length that fits shirt pockets.

At 9 g it weighs about as much as a plastic pencil, so the steel adds durability rather than weight. The textured grip is plastic, and the eraser hides under a metal cap at the top, like on a classic drafting pencil.

## Which M-301 should you buy, 0.5 or 0.7 mm?

**0.5 mm for small, neat handwriting and math; 0.7 mm if you press hard or want a darker, smoother line.** Thicker lead breaks less often, which matters on a pencil without a lead cushion.

Zebra Pen's own store sells the 0.5 mm as a 2-pack and both sizes in 12-packs, all with black grips; Amazon and office stores carry the same packs. Buying a 12-pack brings the price per pencil down further, which is why classrooms and offices stock it.

## How do you refill the M-301?

**Pull off the plunger cap, take out the eraser, and drop standard lead into the tube.** Zebra says it refills with standard lead, so any 0.5 or 0.7 mm lead of the right size works.

The eraser is replaceable too: JetPens sells Zebra eraser refills for the M-701, M-301 and M-402.

## How does the M-301 compare with other everyday pencils?

**It's the metal-barreled budget pick; the P205 is the drafting classic, the Xtra Smooth the disposable bulk buy.**

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Barrel | Stainless steel | Plastic | Plastic | Plastic |
| Sleeve | 3 mm fixed | 4 mm fixed | — | Spring-loaded guard |
| Length | 133 mm | 145 mm | No published length | 137.3 mm |
| Eraser | Under the cap | Under the cap | Top cap, clicks to feed lead | Refill: Zebra G |

Figures for the other pencils come from their guides. Choose the M-301 for a durable everyday pencil that fits a pocket; choose the DelGuard if you keep breaking lead.

## Who should buy the Zebra M-301?

**Students, office workers and anyone who loses or breaks plastic pencils.** It is also a common first "nice" pencil, because the steel barrel feels sturdier than its price suggests.

People who want a long, balanced drafting pencil may find it short, and heavy-handed writers using 0.5 mm should consider a lead-protecting pencil instead.

## Where is the Zebra M-301 made?

**Zebra doesn't state it on its US product page, and the Amazon US listing we read doesn't either.** Zebra Pen Corporation sells it in the US; its parent, Zebra Co., Ltd., is based in Tokyo. Check the package.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does the Zebra M-301 have an eraser?

Yes, under the plunger cap. Zebra says it is refillable, and JetPens sells Zebra eraser refills that fit the M-301, M-701 and M-402.

### What lead does the M-301 take?

Standard 0.5 mm or 0.7 mm lead, depending on the model. Zebra says it refills with standard lead, and the US pack is labeled HB lead.

### Is the M-301 good for drafting?

It has a 3 mm fixed sleeve that works with a ruler, but no lead-grade indicator or weighted grip. For serious drafting, a 4 mm sleeve pencil like the Pentel P205 is the usual pick.

### Is the M-301 the pencil version of the F-301 pen?

Yes. Both belong to Zebra's Steel 3-Series, with the same stainless steel barrel, black grip and clip. The F-301 is a ballpoint.

### Can the M-301 sleeve poke through a pocket?

The 3 mm sleeve is fixed, so it doesn't retract. Retract the lead and clip it point-down at your own risk; a retracting pencil is safer in a shirt pocket.

### Is the Zebra M-301 made in the USA?

Zebra doesn't say on its US product page. Zebra Pen Corporation sells it in the US; the parent company, Zebra Co., Ltd., is in Tokyo.
