Visconti's Italian site says its pens are handmade in the heart of Florence, and its Homo Sapiens Lava page says its artisans combine Etna basalt with resin by a secret process. ## What is the Visconti Homo Sapiens?

**It is Visconti's best-known fountain pen: an oversized pen made of Etna lava mixed with resin, filled by a built-in vacuum power filler.** Visconti says it was the first time lava had been used to make a pen, and that its artisans combine basaltic lava from Mount Etna with resin by a secret process.

The Bronze Age, which Visconti's Italian shop calls Lava Bronze, pairs the black lava with bronze trim and a rose-gold 14k nib. On October 22, 2026 it was number 1 on Goulet Pens' best-seller list. It's also one of the picks in our [most collectible pens](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/collectible-pens/) roundup.

*The capped pen is 146 mm; posting the cap makes it 173.4 mm, per Goulet.*

## Why does Visconti use lava?

**For its feel and toughness: Visconti says lava stone resists scratches, water, limescale and sudden temperature changes, and is hygroscopic.** That last property means it absorbs a little moisture, which Goulet says makes the pen comfortable and warm to the touch.

Visconti adds that the stone's look depends on how it is cut: surface layers are more porous, deeper ones more compact, and the final finish is done by hand. Expect each pen's grain and speckle to differ slightly.

## How do the cap and filler work?

**The cap locks with a short twist, and the pen fills straight from the bottle with a vacuum plunger.** Visconti calls the cap a bayonet system: twist gently to close, push toward the barrel and turn to open. Goulet calls it the Hook Safe Lock and measures a quarter turn.

The power filler is a vacuum (plunger) filler made of titanium to resist ink corrosion, per Goulet. It holds about 1.51 ml and takes bottled ink only; our [fountain pen filling guide](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/how-to-fill-a-fountain-pen/) explains how vacuum fillers work.

## Which Homo Sapiens should you choose?

**Choose by trim, nib metal and finish; Visconti's lava pens share the same shape.** Visconti's Italian site describes three lava versions.

- **Lava Bronze (Bronze Age):** black lava, polished bronze trim, rose-gold nib. Goulet sells 14k and 18k nibs.
- **Lava Dark Age:** monochrome dark grey, black galvanic trim, a ruthenium-finished gold nib and an anti-stain finish on the lava.
- **Lava Color:** lava in colored finishes.

Visconti also sells non-lava Homo Sapiens pens, such as the new Carbon Rose in carbon fiber with rose-gold anodized Ergal trim.

## How does it compare with other luxury vacuum and piston pens?

**It is heavier than its rivals, with a smaller ink capacity than Pilot's vacuum filler.** Figures for the other pens come from our guides.

## Where is the Visconti Homo Sapiens made?

**In Italy.** Visconti is based in Florence and says its pens are handmade there; Goulet also describes Visconti as making its pens in Florence. Visconti doesn't publish a release year for the Homo Sapiens on its current site, and we couldn't confirm one from a primary source.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the Visconti Homo Sapiens really made of lava?

Yes, mixed with resin. Visconti says its artisans combine basaltic lava from Mount Etna with resin by a secret process, which Goulet describes the same way.

### What is the difference between Homo Sapiens Bronze Age and Dark Age?

The trim and nib. Bronze Age has polished bronze trim and a rose-gold nib; Visconti's Dark Age has black galvanic trim, a ruthenium-finished gold nib and an anti-stain finish on the lava.

### Does the Homo Sapiens take cartridges?

No. Goulet lists bottled ink only: the pen fills through its built-in vacuum power filler, which holds about 1.51 ml.

### Is the Bronze Age trim plated or solid bronze?

Solid bronze, according to Goulet, and Visconti lists the trim simply as bronze. We haven't yet tracked how it ages; our long-term test will photograph it over a month of use.

### Is there an 18k Homo Sapiens Bronze Age?

Yes. Goulet sells 14k and 18k versions; on October 22, 2026 the 14k was first and the 18k 44th on its best-seller list.

### Can you post the Homo Sapiens cap?

Yes. Goulet lists it as postable, at 173.4 mm long posted, though that makes a long pen.

### Is the Visconti Homo Sapiens made in Italy?

Yes. Visconti is based in Florence and says its pens are handmade there; Goulet also says Visconti makes its pens in Florence.
