## How do the Visconti Homo Sapiens and Mirage Mythos differ?

**The Homo Sapiens is Visconti's lava-bodied flagship with a gold nib and a vacuum filler; the Mirage Mythos is its entry pen, in resin with a steel nib and cartridges.** Both come from Visconti in Florence, and both are selling well in the US right now.

On October 22, 2026, the [Visconti Homo Sapiens](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/visconti-homo-sapiens/) Bronze Age was No. 1 on Goulet Pens' best-seller list. The [Visconti Mirage Mythos](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/visconti-mirage-mythos/) in Poseidon was 24th, rated 4.75 out of 5 by 16 buyers.

## How do the specs compare?

**The Homo Sapiens is longer, wider and 12 g heavier, and holds more ink.**

## Is the gold nib worth it?

**For feel and nib choice, yes; for line quality alone, not necessarily.** The Homo Sapiens's 14k nib is rose-gold plated to match the bronze, and Visconti offers a stub, which the Mythos doesn't.

The Mythos's #6 steel nib comes from Schmidt in Germany, per Goulet. The Pen Addict's reviewer called hers smooth and well balanced, so a steel nib here isn't a compromise for everyday writing.

## What does the lava actually do?

**It changes the feel more than the writing.** Visconti says the Etna basalt resists scratches, water and thermal shock and is slightly hygroscopic, so the pen feels warm and dry in the hand.

Visconti adds that each lava pen's grain differs slightly, because the stone is finished by hand. The Mythos gets its look from swirled resin instead, also unique to each pen, per Goulet.

## Which is easier to live with?

**The Mirage Mythos, because it takes any standard international cartridge.** You can carry spares and swap colors in seconds, and the magnetic cap closes with a small twist.

The Homo Sapiens fills only from a bottle, but its vacuum filler holds more than the Mythos's converter. Our guide to [filling a fountain pen](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/how-to-fill-a-fountain-pen/) shows both methods.

## Which should you buy?

**Buy the Mirage Mythos as a first Italian luxury pen or a colorful daily writer; buy the Homo Sapiens if you want the flagship to keep.**

- **Mirage Mythos:** seven colors named for the Olympian gods, from sea-blue Poseidon to swirled Athena, and the lower price.
- **Homo Sapiens Bronze Age:** a heavier oversized pen, a gold nib with a stub option and the lava body Visconti is known for. It's one of our [most collectible pens](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/collectible-pens/).

## Where are they made?

**In Florence, Italy, where Visconti says its pens are handmade.** Goulet also describes Visconti as making its pens in Florence.

The Mirage Mythos's product page doesn't name a country, and Goulet says its steel nib is made by Schmidt in Germany. Visconti doesn't publish a release year for either pen on its current site.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the Homo Sapiens worth four times the Mirage Mythos?

Only if you want what it adds: a gold nib, a lava body, a vacuum filler that holds more ink and a heavier, larger pen. The writing feel of a well-tuned steel #6 nib can be very close for everyday notes.

### Which Visconti is best for a first luxury pen?

The Mirage Mythos: it takes standard international cartridges or a converter, so it's easy to keep inked, and it costs about a quarter of the Homo Sapiens in Italy.

### Can the Homo Sapiens use cartridges?

No. Its power filler is a built-in vacuum plunger that fills from a bottle; Goulet measures about 1.51 ml per fill.

### Does the Mirage Mythos post securely?

It posts by magnet, but less firmly than it caps. The Pen Addict's reviewer and a Goulet customer both noticed a slight rattle when writing with it posted.

### Are Visconti pens made in Italy?

Yes. Visconti is based in Florence and says its pens are handmade there. Goulet says the Mirage Mythos's steel nib is made by Schmidt in Germany.

### Which is heavier, the Homo Sapiens or the Mirage Mythos?

The Homo Sapiens Bronze Age, at 44 g against 32 g for the Mythos with its converter, per Goulet's measurements.

### What colors do the two pens come in?

Visconti lists seven Mythos colors named for Greek gods, from Poseidon to Athena. The lava Homo Sapiens comes as Lava Bronze, Lava Dark Age and Lava Color.
