## What is the uni-ball Vision?

**The uni-ball Vision is a capped, disposable rollerball that writes with liquid ink fed from a visible reservoir, made by Mitsubishi Pencil of Japan.** In Japan and Europe the same pen is called the uni-ball Eye; Mitsubishi Pencil's company history dates it to 1994. Despite the shared name, [Mitsubishi Pencil is not part of the Mitsubishi group](https://stationerytimes.com/stories/mitsubishi-pencil-history/).

It's one of the best-selling rollerballs in the US. On October 22, 2026, Amazon ranked a Vision fine black 4-pack #20 in Rollerball Pens and #33 in all Pens & Refills, with 15,187 ratings averaging 4.7 stars.

## uni-ball Vision specs

| Spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Maker | Mitsubishi Pencil Co., Ltd. (Japan), brand uni-ball |
| Type | Capped liquid-ink rollerball, not refillable |
| Points (US) | 0.5 mm Micro · 0.7 mm Fine · 1.0 mm Bold |
| Ink | uni Super Ink (pigment, per Mitsubishi Pencil Japan) |
| Length | 138.8 mm (5.5 in) capped, Eye Micro, per uni-ball UK |
| Diameter | 10.3 mm |
| Weight | 12.963 g (uni-ball UK) |
| Ball and tip | Tungsten carbide ball, stainless steel tip |
| Japanese model | UB-150, 0.5 mm only, ¥165 (about US$1.00) including tax |
| Made in | Japan (US business supplier listings) |

Size and weight come from uni-ball UK; we use them for the US pen because the 0.5 mm Micro is the same model. uni-ball's US page doesn't give a length.

## What do the ink window and uni Super Ink do?

**The clear, ribbed window in the barrel shows how much liquid ink is left, and uni Super Ink is the pigment ink uni-ball says resists water, fading and fraud.** uni-ball's US page credits a "Uni-Flow Ink System" for keeping the flow even, and Mitsubishi Pencil Japan describes the line as crisp and vivid.

Because the ink is pigment rather than dye, it bonds into the paper fibers, which is why uni-ball markets it for important documents. That's the maker's claim; we haven't tested water or fading resistance.

## Which Vision point size should you choose?

**Choose the 0.7 mm Fine for everyday notes, the 0.5 mm Micro for small writing and thin paper, and the 1.0 mm Bold for signatures.** A liquid-ink rollerball lays down a wetter line than a ballpoint of the same size, so each Vision size writes darker than its number suggests.

*The 1.0 mm Bold ball is twice the diameter of the 0.5 mm Micro.*

## How is the Vision different from the Vision Elite?

**Both are capped uni-ball rollerballs with uni Super Ink; the Vision Elite is the newer, sealed-ink model uni-ball markets as airplane-safe.**

| | uni-ball Vision | [uni-ball Vision Elite](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/uni-ball-vision-elite/) |
|---|---|---|
| Launched in Japan | 1994 (as the Eye) | 2003 |
| US points | 0.5, 0.7, 1.0 mm | 0.5, 0.8 mm |
| Ink window | Yes, clear ribbed section | Translucent window |
| Airplane-safe claim | No | Yes |
| Length | 138.8 mm | 142 mm |

Pick the Elite if you fly a lot; the Vision is the simpler, more widely stocked pen. For a gel alternative from the same maker, see the [uni-ball Signo 207](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/uni-ball-signo-207/).

## How does it compare to the Pilot Precise V5?

**The Vision and the [Pilot Precise V5](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pilot-precise-v5/) are the two classic US capped liquid-ink rollerballs; the V5 has a long needle point, the Vision a conical one.** Both are disposable and show their ink through a window. The V5 is a 0.5 mm Extra Fine (its sibling, the V7, is 0.7 mm); the Vision runs from 0.5 to 1.0 mm.

Our [gel vs ballpoint vs rollerball](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/gel-vs-ballpoint-vs-rollerball/) explainer covers how liquid ink differs from gel and oil-based ink.

## Where is the uni-ball Vision made?

**US business suppliers list the uni-ball Vision as made in Japan.** OnTimeSupplies gives Japan as the country of origin for both the Vision Fine (item 60139) and the Vision Micro (item 60117). uni-ball's own pages don't state it, so check the pack.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the uni-ball Vision the same pen as the uni-ball Eye?

Yes, under a different name. uni-ball UK sells the 0.5 mm Micro as the Eye Micro UB-150, and Mitsubishi Pencil's Japanese site sells the 0.5 mm as ユニボール アイ, model UB-150.

### Can you write checks with a uni-ball Vision?

uni-ball says Vision pens use uni Super Ink, which it describes as protecting against water, fading and fraud, the property people look for in a check-writing pen. We haven't tested it against check-washing.

### Does the Vision bleed through notebook paper?

It can on thin paper, because liquid ink soaks in more than ballpoint paste, and the 1.0 mm Bold puts down the most ink. Try the 0.5 mm Micro on thin pages; we haven't run our own bleed test yet.

### How long does a uni-ball Vision last?

uni-ball doesn't publish a writing distance. Because the pen can't be refilled, you replace it when the ink window shows empty.

### What ink colors does the uni-ball Vision come in?

Black, blue and red are the staples, and US office suppliers list green, purple and pink singles plus assorted fashion-color packs in the 0.7 mm Fine. Japan sells the 0.5 mm in black, red and blue only.

### Is the uni-ball Vision good for left-handed writers?

It's not a quick-dry pen; liquid ink stays wet longer than a ballpoint, so left-handers who drag a hand through the line may smear it. Our best pens for left-handed writers lists faster-drying picks.
