# Tombow PiT Retry C: Tape Runner You Can Reposition

> PiT Retry C is Tombow's refillable tape runner with a one-minute grace period. Its barrier layer keeps the glue from soaking into the paper, so Tombow says you can lift and re-stick for about 1 minute before it bonds fully. The dot-shaped tape is 8.4 mm by 8 m. The body is 330 yen with tax (about US$2.09).

- Made in (Tombow PiT Retry C tape runner (PN-CRN, refill PR-CRN)): Not stated. Tombow's product page lists capacities, part numbers and prices but no country of manufacture, so check the label on your copy. Tombow Pencil Co., Ltd. is a Tokyo company.

## Key takeaways

- Tombow says a barrier layer keeps the glue from soaking into paper for about 1 minute, so you can re-stick a misplaced piece.
- The tape is dot-shaped, which Tombow says improves cutting and makes repositioning easier; it is 8.4 mm × 8 m.
- The body (PN-CRN) is 330 yen with tax, about US$2.09; the refill (PR-CRN) is 242 yen, about US$1.53.
- Repositioning time is measured at 23 °C under a 500 g load and varies with paper; repeated lifting weakens the hold.
- Tombow's page gives no country of manufacture; the body is mostly recycled plastic.

## What is Tombow PiT Retry C?

**It is a tape runner that forgives a misplaced strip.** Tombow's pitch is that you can lift and re-stick for about a minute after you join two pieces, and the bond then completes over time. The company says the tape uses technology that controls how fast the glue acts: a barrier layer stops the adhesive from soaking into the paper for roughly the first minute.

The tape is laid as dots, not a solid band. Tombow says that shape cuts more cleanly and makes the repositioning easier. It is part of Tombow's PiT tape runners alongside the [PiT Power C](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/tombow-pit-power-c-tape-runner/) and [PiT Tack C](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/tombow-pit-tack-c-tape-runner/).

## What does the body offer?

**A small oval body with a shake-correcting head.** Tombow lists a Fit Head that corrects for an unsteady hand so the whole tape width transfers, a shaped head that lets you see where you are gluing, an oval body that suits any grip and is compact enough to carry, and a full-cover cap you can park on the back of the body for a longer grip.

## What are the tape and the prices?

**8.4 mm wide and 8 m long, with an easy refill.** Tombow lists, with tax, the body PN-CRN at 330 yen (about US$2.09) and the refill PR-CRN at 242 yen (about US$1.53). Prices are Japanese list prices at 158 yen to the dollar. Compared with the other Tombow runners we cover:

| Runner | Tape | Refill | Refill per meter |
|---|---|---|---|
| PiT Retry C | 8.4 mm × 8 m | 242 yen | about 30 yen |
| PiT Power C | 8.4 mm × 7 m | 242 yen | about 35 yen |
| PiT Tack C | 8.4 mm × 7 m | 242 yen | about 35 yen |
| PiT Air | 8.4 mm × 16 m | 385 yen | about 24 yen |
| PiT Power D | 8.4 mm × 16 m | 363 yen | about 23 yen |

Prices include tax and are Japanese list prices; per-meter figures are our arithmetic.

## How do you use it?

**Press, pull slowly, lift straight up to cut, then press hard.** Tombow says to attach the cap to the back, press the head where you want to start, pull slowly and lift the head straight up at the end to cut. After you have joined the pieces, press hard from above. To fix a loose tape, take out the refill and turn the core in the arrow direction to take up the slack.

## What limits does it have?

**The minute is a guide, not a promise.** Tombow says the repositioning time was measured at 23 °C under a 500 g load and changes with the paper. The hold weakens with how you peel and how often. For envelopes, apply the tape twice. On some papers a second layer makes repositioning harder, and fuzzy papers like washi may not re-stick cleanly. Tombow says not to run the tape along a curve or a wavy line, to wipe dirt, water and oil off first, to apply at 15 to 35 °C because adhesion drops in the cold, and to replace the cap after use so dust stays off the glue. A fast pull can tear some papers into the roll, and some printers and copiers leave prints the glue will not stick to, so test anything important first.

## Where is it made, and what does it cost?

**Tombow's page doesn't state a country of manufacture.** The company is based in Tokyo. At 330 yen with tax (about US$2.09), the runner is in our $ band (under $5).

## Frequently asked questions

### How long can you reposition?

About 1 minute after sticking, per Tombow, measured at 23 °C under a 500 g load. Paper type changes it.

### Why can you lift it?

A barrier layer stops the glue soaking into the paper for the first minute, and then the bond completes.

### What is the dot tape?

The adhesive is laid as dots rather than a solid band, which Tombow says improves cutting and repositioning.

### Can you reposition many times?

Not well. Tombow says the hold weakens with repeated peeling and with how the paper is peeled.

### Is it good for envelopes?

Tombow says to apply a second pass of tape when sealing envelopes.

### Which papers are a problem?

Fuzzy-surfaced paper such as washi or shoji paper may be hard to reposition, per Tombow.

### Is it refillable?

Yes. The refill is PR-CRN at 242 yen with tax; Tombow says the design makes swapping easy even for a first-time user.
