## Key takeaways

- Power D lays 8.4 mm × 16 m of power tape, 1.5 times as thick as Tombow's earlier tape, for about 20 percent more adhesion by Tombow's figure.
- A Pita System makes the glue arrive at the tip, so the tape starts where you press; Tombow shows the body sinking and a gear turning.
- A curve-fit body fits the fingers, and a safety lock stops rattle and keeps the runner from coming apart if dropped.
- The body is 484 yen with tax (about US$3.06) and the refill is 363 yen (about US$2.30); the tape is acid free.
- Tombow's page lists a 2015 iF Design Award and gives no country of manufacture.

## What is Tombow PiT Power D?

**It is a tape runner aimed at envelopes and thick paper.** Tombow's pitch is a single stroke that bonds a heavy envelope firmly. A power tape sticks the moment it is pressed, and a Pita System helps the strip start exactly where you place the tip. Tombow says the glue is 1.5 times as thick as its earlier tape, which gives about 20 percent more adhesion, and that fine particles in the glue help the tape cut cleanly.

It sits beside the lighter-pull [PiT Air](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/tombow-pit-air-tape-runner/) in Tombow's range. For the runner Tombow USA sells, see the [MONO Adhesive Permanent](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/tombow-mono-adhesive-permanent/).

## How does it work?

**The body sinks under pressure and a gear feeds the tape.** Tombow describes five steps: the body sinks when you press, a gear turns, the tape is laid as you pull, the gear returns when you lift the head, and the tape is sent out. The effect is that glue always reaches the tip, so it begins right at your starting point.

Other features: a curve-fit body with a dent that fits the fingers for long sessions, a safety lock that stops rattle and keeps the runner from coming apart if you drop it, and refills that Tombow says cut discarded weight by about 40 percent against its earlier design.

## What sizes and prices does it come in?

**One tape, with a refill.** Tombow lists these, with tax.

| Item | Tape | Part number | Price with tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| PiT Power D | 8.4 mm × 16 m | PN-IP | 484 yen (about US$3.06) |
| Refill | 8.4 mm × 16 m | PR-IP | 363 yen (about US$2.30) |

Prices are Japanese list prices at 158 yen to the dollar. A body and a refill together cost 847 yen (about US$5.36), so the refill saves 121 yen (about US$0.77) over buying a second body.

## What is it good for?

**Thick envelopes, receipts, photos and clippings.** Tombow lists four uses: sealing stiff or thick envelopes, gluing receipts from their edges, mounting coated photo paper in scrapbooks, and sticking magazine or newspaper clippings. The tape is acid free, so Tombow says it should not oxidize or discolor the bonded part.

## What should you avoid?

**Curves, cold rooms and dirty surfaces.** Tombow says not to run the tape along a curve or a wavy line. Wipe dirt, water and oil off first, apply between 15 and 35 °C, and replace the head cover after use. A fast pull can tear some papers into the roll, and some printers and copiers produce prints the glue will not stick to, so test first. After joining, Tombow says to press hard on top.

## Where is it made, and what does it cost?

**Tombow's page doesn't state a country of manufacture.** The company is based in Tokyo and the body is mostly recycled plastic, per its eco note. At 484 yen with tax (about US$3.06), the runner is in our $ band (under $5), and so is the refill.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the power tape?

Tombow's thicker adhesive: 1.5 times the glue thickness of its earlier tape, for about 20 percent more adhesion by Tombow's measurement.

### How long is the tape?

8.4 mm wide and 16 m long, the same as the standard PiT Air.

### Is it refillable?

Yes. The refill is PR-IP at 363 yen with tax, and Tombow says refilling reduces discarded weight by about 40 percent against its earlier design.

### What can you stick with it?
