# Sustainable Pens vs Disposable: What Really Helps

> A refillable pen you keep and refill is the clearest win: you replace a small refill instead of a whole plastic body. Recycled-plastic pens help less if they can't be refilled, and makers count recycled content differently. Fountain pens with bottled ink have the lowest published ink cost per page. TerraCycle's free BIC pen program no longer appears.

- Made in (Pentel EnerGel RTX (BL77, BLN75, BLN73, BLN77, BL80)): Japan or Mexico. Pentel of America's 2022 product catalog gives the origin of the EnerGel RTX (BL77 metal tip and BLN73/75/77 needle tips) as 'Japan / Mexico' without saying which SKU comes from where. Retailer listings match: OfficeSupply.com lists Mexico for one RTX listing. Pentel's Japanese product page doesn't state a country. Check the package of the exact pen you buy. - Made in (Pilot Acroball Retractable Ballpoint (0.5 / 0.7 / 1.0 mm; BAB-15)): Japan. Per US business-supplier spec sheets: OnTimeSupplies lists Japan for the 0.7 mm 2-pack (item 31895), and FairPrice in Singapore lists Japan for the 0.7 mm BAB-15F. Australian and US retailers also label Acroball refills as made in Japan. Pilot's Japanese web catalog doesn't state it. - Made in (Pilot G2 Premium Retractable Gel Pen (0.38 / 0.5 / 0.7 / 1.0 mm)): Japan. Per US retailer spec sheets (Stop & Shop, OnTimeSupplies for item 31171). Some grocery listings for a 4-pack say "Japan, USA", so origin may vary by pack. Pilot's US site doesn't state it in the sources we found. - Made in (Zebra Sarasa Clip Retractable Gel Pen (0.3 / 0.4 / 0.5 / 0.7 / 1.0 mm; JJ15)): Japan. Per retailer spec sheets: FairPrice (Singapore) lists Japan for the 0.7 mm pen and the JF-0.5 refills, Carrefour UAE lists Japan for the Sarasa Push Clip, and SM Stationery (Philippines) says made in Japan. Zebra's Japanese and global product pages don't state a country of manufacture. Source: https://www.fairprice.com.sg/product/zebra-sarasa-clip-gel-pen-0-7mm-b-jjb15-fb-navy-blue-ink-10-pc-90118544
- Made in (Zebra Z-Grip Retractable Ballpoint Pen, 1.0 mm Medium (item 22218, black, 18-pack)): China. Per OnTimeSupplies' spec sheet for item 22218 (country of origin China) and Unsharpen's spec table (China). A search-result summary of an Austrian RS listing for a Z-Grip gave Japan; we couldn't confirm it on the page. Zebra Pen's US site doesn't state it. - Made in (BIC Cristal Xtra Smooth Ballpoint Pen, Medium 1.0 mm (MS11) / Cristal Original): Mexico. BIC's French 75th-anniversary press kit (2025) says the Cristal is still made in BIC's own factories in France, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa, on machines BIC designs. For US packs, a Stop & Shop listing for a blue Cristal Xtra Smooth 10-pack gives Mexico, as does OnTimeSupplies' listing for the red MS11RD. European packs of the Cristal Original have been listed as made in France (Farnell). Check the pack. Source: https://stopandshop.com/groceries/product/bic-cristal-ball-point-pens-xtra-smooth-medium-blue-ink-10-ct-pkg/27921
- Made in (Pilot Kakuno Fountain Pen): Japan. Unsharpen gives Japan as the country of origin, and Mynavi News calls the Kakuno a domestic (kokusan) fountain pen. Pilot's Japanese catalog page for FKA-1SR (read in full on October 20, 2026) doesn't state a country. LarryPost, cited earlier, no longer loads. Source: https://unsharpen.com/pen/pilot-kakuno/
- Made in (TWSBI ECO Fountain Pen): Taiwan. Goldspot's ECO spec sheet says "Made in Taiwan", and Pen Chalet shows "ECO-T Taiwan" engraved on the ECO-T's cap band. TWSBI's own product pages don't print a country of manufacture, and its Taiwanese site, twsbi.com.tw, didn't load for us on October 20, 2026. JetPens says TWSBI nibs are made in Germany. ## Key takeaways

- The EPA counted 35.7 million tons of plastic in US municipal waste in 2018; 8.7% was recycled and 27 million tons went to landfill.
- BIC says a Cristal weighs 5.8 g and holds 0.4 g of ink, so the ink is under 7% of what you throw away (our arithmetic).
- Zebra estimates that one Sarasa Clip plus five of its bio-based refills cuts CO2 by 48% against six ordinary Sarasa Clips.
- Recycled-content figures range from 54% (EnerGel RTX body) to 78% (Acroball BeGreen), and each maker counts different parts.
- Montblanc says 50 ml of ink writes about 1,250 A4 pages with a medium nib, under ¥2 (about US$0.01) of Pilot Iroshizuku per page.

## Is a refillable pen really better than a disposable one?

**Yes, if you actually refill it: you throw away a small refill instead of a whole body.** BIC says a Cristal weighs 5.8 g and holds 0.4 g of ink, so when it runs dry, more than 93% of its weight goes in the bin with it (our arithmetic).

The makers' own estimates point the same way. Zebra calculates that one Sarasa Clip used with five of its bio-based refills emits 48% less CO2 than six ordinary Sarasa Clips, and Pilot says making a whole pen generates more CO2 than making a refill. Both are company figures, not independent studies.

We haven't measured anything ourselves; this guide uses EPA data, maker statements and the facts in our own guides.

## How much plastic waste do pens add?

**Nobody we checked publishes a primary US figure for pens alone; the EPA counts plastics as a whole.** In 2018, the EPA says, the US generated 35.7 million tons of plastic in municipal solid waste, 12.2% of the total.

Only 3 million tons, 8.7%, was recycled. About 5.6 million tons was burned for energy and 27 million tons went to landfill. Pens are a small slice of that, so the honest case for refills is about not wasting a body that still works, not about saving the planet with one pen.

## How do the eight example pens compare?

**Four take refills, two refill from ink, and two are disposable; recycled-content claims vary by maker and by what they count.**

| Pen | Refill or fill | Recycled content (maker's claim) | Price band |
|---|---|---|---|
| [Pentel EnerGel RTX](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pentel-energel/) | LR and LRN refills | 54% of the body (Pentel of America) | $ |
| [Pilot Acroball](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pilot-acroball/) | BRFV-10 refill | 78% as Acroball BeGreen (Pilot Nordic) | $ |
| [Pilot G2](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pilot-g2/) | G2 refill | 70%, ink and refills excluded (Pilot UK) | $ |
| [Zebra Sarasa Clip](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/zebra-sarasa-clip/) | JF refill | 76% by Eco Mark calculation (Zebra Japan) | $ |
| [Pilot Kakuno](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pilot-kakuno/) | Cartridge or CON-40/70 converter | Recycled PC body (Pilot Japan, no %) | $$ |
| [TWSBI ECO](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/twsbi-eco/) | Bottled ink, piston | None stated | $$$ |
| [Zebra Z-Grip Recycled](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/zebra-z-grip/) | None (not refillable) | 68% of named parts (Zebra Pen US) | $ |
| [BIC Cristal](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/bic-cristal/) | None | None stated | $ |

![Bar chart of makers' recycled-content claims for five pens, with Japan's Eco Mark threshold marked](https://stationerytimes.com/images/sustainable-pens-vs-disposable-recycled.svg)

*Each bar counts different parts, so the numbers don't compare exactly.*

## What does "recycled content" really mean?

**It means part of the plastic came from waste, but each maker decides which parts it counts.** The US Federal Trade Commission's Green Guides say a recycled claim must use material diverted from the waste stream, before or after consumer use, and a partly recycled product should state the share by weight.

Japan's Eco Mark for ballpoint pens requires 70% recycled material in the main materials, or 60% if it is post-consumer, but leaves out metal and ink. It also requires replacement refills, which is why an Eco Mark ballpoint is refillable.

Pilot's 70% leaves out ink and refills, and Zebra Pen counts the Z-Grip's barrel, clip holder, clip dot and cone. A higher percentage on a pen you throw away can still mean more waste than a lower one on a pen you refill.

## Are fountain pens the most sustainable choice?

**For heavy writers, a fountain pen filled from a bottle wastes the least and costs the least per page.** A piston filler such as the TWSBI ECO, which holds up to 1.76 ml per Goulet Pens, or a converter in a Kakuno, leaves only an empty glass bottle.

The trade-off is upkeep and paper: fountain pens need flushing and good paper, as our [fountain pen vs gel pen](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/fountain-pen-vs-gel-pen/) guide explains. A cartridge pen is still refillable, but each cartridge is another small piece of plastic.

## What does it cost per page?

**Bottled ink is cheapest; gel and ballpoint makers don't publish pages per refill.**

| Source | Figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Montblanc | 50 ml of ink for about 1,250 A4 pages (medium nib) | About ¥1.8 (about US$0.01) per page with ¥2,200 (about US$14) Iroshizuku |
| BIC | Up to 3 km of writing per Cristal | No page count given |
| Pentel (Japan) | Refill ¥99 (about US$0.60), pen ¥275 (about US$1.70) | Refill is 36% of a new pen |
| Zebra (Japan) | JF-0.5 ¥88 (about US$0.60), Sarasa Clip ¥132 (about US$0.80) | Refill is 67% of a new pen |

At Montblanc's rate a 1.76 ml ECO fill writes about 44 A4 pages; that and the shares are our arithmetic. Our [pen refills explained](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pen-refills-explained/) guide lists which refill fits which pen.

## Can you recycle old pens?

**Only through special programs, and the free ones have shrunk.** BIC and TerraCycle launched a free US pen recycling program in April 2020, but when we checked on October 22, 2026 its page returned "not found" and TerraCycle's list of 85 free US programs had no BIC or Pilot pen program.

TerraCycle still sells a paid Pens, Pencils and Markers Zero Waste Box, which takes any brand; the smallest box costs over $75, so it suits a school or office better than a household.

## Which should you choose?

**Keep one body you like and refill it; that beats any recycled-content figure.**

- **Everyday gel:** EnerGel RTX, G2 or Sarasa Clip, plus a pack of refills.
- **Everyday ballpoint:** the refillable Acroball rather than a disposable.
- **Long writing at home:** a Kakuno with a converter or a TWSBI ECO and a bottle.
- **Lending pens out:** cheap disposables are fine; just buy fewer.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you put pens in the recycling bin?

Check your local program first; the EPA's plastics data doesn't break pens out, and no maker we checked says pens belong in the curbside bin. The pen-specific option we found is TerraCycle's paid Pens, Pencils and Markers Zero Waste Box, which takes any brand.

### Is a recycled-plastic pen better than a refillable one?

Not on its own. The Zebra Z-Grip Recycled uses 68% recycled material but isn't sold as refillable, so the whole pen is still thrown away; a refillable body keeps working for many refills.

### Does BIC still run a free pen recycling program?

Not that we could find. BIC and TerraCycle launched a free US program in April 2020, but on October 22, 2026 its TerraCycle page returned 'not found' and it wasn't among TerraCycle's 85 US free programs.

### What does 70% recycled plastic mean on a pen?

It depends on what the maker counts. Pilot's 70% for BeGreen pens leaves out ink and refills, and Japan's Eco Mark for ballpoint pens excludes metal and ink, so it isn't 70% of the whole pen.

### Are fountain pen ink cartridges recyclable?

The makers we checked don't say. A converter or a piston filler avoids cartridges: the Pilot Kakuno takes a CON-40 or CON-70 converter, and the TWSBI ECO fills only from a bottle.

### Do refill pens really save money?

On a $$ or $$$ body, yes; on a cheap gel pen, a little. Pentel lists an EnerGel refill at ¥99 (about US$0.60) against ¥275 (about US$1.70) for the pen in Japan, while a Sarasa Clip refill costs two-thirds of the pen.

### Why is the BIC Cristal so popular if it's disposable?

It is cheap, light and long-lasting: BIC says it writes up to 3 km on 0.4 g of ink. BIC also says the first Cristal of 1950 was refillable.
