## What is the Sharpie Gel highlighter?

**It's a highlighter made of solid fluorescent gel that you twist up like a glue stick, instead of liquid ink in a felt tip.** Sharpie sells it for thin and glossy paper, where liquid highlighters bleed or smear.

Sharpie calls the formula SmearBlock gel. Its product copy, as carried by distributor ADI, says the marks won't bleed through paper and work on glossy pages, thin paper, magazines and Bibles.

## Sharpie Gel highlighter specs

**One bullet-shaped gel tip, twist-up, sold in packs of 3 and 5.**

| Spec | Sharpie Gel highlighter, 5-pack |
|---|---|
| Item number | 1803277 |
| UPC | 071641042896 |
| Tip | Bullet-shaped gel stick |

| Colors | Pink, yellow, orange, green, blue |
| Bleed-through | None, per Sharpie |
| Dries out uncapped | No, per Sharpie |

Sharpie doesn't publish the highlighter's length, gel diameter or how many pages a stick lasts. It says only that the gel writes as long as a traditional pen-style highlighter.

![Gel vs liquid highlighter on thin paper: the gel sits on the surface, the liquid ink soaks through to the back](https://stationerytimes.com/images/sharpie-gel-highlighter-vs-liquid.svg)

*Why gel doesn't bleed: it coats the surface rather than soaking in (illustrative).*

## Does the Sharpie Gel highlighter bleed through Bible paper?

**Sharpie says no, and that's the main reason people buy it.** Its copy lists Bibles, magazines and glossy pages among the surfaces it works on.

The trade-off may be brightness. Amazon's summary of buyer reviews reports mixed feedback on color, with some buyers finding the gel less intense than a liquid highlighter.

## Sharpie Gel vs a regular Sharpie highlighter

**Choose the Gel for thin, glossy or printed pages; choose a liquid highlighter such as the Sharpie Tank for brighter color and a chisel tip on normal paper.**

## How do you use a gel highlighter?

**Take the cap off, twist out a few millimeters of gel, and glide it over the text with light pressure.** Sharpie says the gel conforms to your handwriting style, so the bullet tip works for both broad bands and underlines.

Because the gel stays on the surface, it doesn't need drying time the way liquid ink does, and Sharpie says it won't smear pen, marker or inkjet ink underneath. That makes it useful for printed handouts and glossy magazine pages.

Sharpie says the stick won't dry out even uncapped, but the cap still keeps the tip clean in a bag.

## Who is the Sharpie Gel highlighter for?

**Bible readers, students with thin-paper textbooks, and anyone highlighting printouts.** Those are the papers where liquid highlighters most often show through or smear inkjet ink.

If you highlight ordinary notebook paper, a liquid chisel highlighter such as the Sharpie Tank also works, and gives a chisel edge the bullet-shaped gel doesn't.

## How popular is the Sharpie Gel highlighter?

**Very: the 5-pack is well rated and widely reviewed on Amazon US.** On October 23, 2026 it showed 4,893 ratings averaging 4.7 stars.

The 5-pack worked out to under $2 a highlighter when we checked, in our $ band (under $5). One retailer marks the older retractable yellow 12-pack (item 1780478) as discontinued.

## Where is the Sharpie Gel highlighter made?

**In South Korea, per ADI Global Distribution's listing for the 5-pack.** ADI notes that origin is subject to change, and Sharpie's own site blocked our reader, so check the package. Sharpie is an American brand owned by Newell Brands.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do Sharpie Gel highlighters bleed through Bible pages?

Sharpie says they don't: the gel is made not to bleed through paper and to work on thin pages, magazines and Bibles. Test a margin first, since Bible papers vary.

### Do Sharpie Gel highlighters dry out?

Sharpie says they won't dry out even if left uncapped, because the color is a solid gel, not liquid ink in a felt tip.

### How do you use a Sharpie Gel highlighter?

Pull off the cap and twist the bottom of the barrel to push more gel out, as Sharpie describes. Advance only a little at a time so the stick doesn't snap.

### Will a Sharpie Gel highlighter smear my pen?

Sharpie says its SmearBlock gel gives total smear protection over ballpoint, rollerball, gel, marker and inkjet ink.

### What colors come in the Sharpie Gel 5-pack?

Pink, yellow, orange, green and blue, as pictured on Sharpie's 5-pack (item 1803277). Sharpie also sells a smaller 3-pack.

### Are Sharpie Gel highlighters made in the USA?

No. ADI Global Distribution lists South Korea for the 5-pack, noting that origin can change.
