## What are Sanby's sealing wax sets?

**They are starter kits for wax seals, made with two Sanby artist lines: eric and ob1.** Sanby says each set is handy for people starting wax sealing for the first time, and that it makes letters and gifts more fun. It also sells matching single stamps and wax packs. Every set has the same five parts: one stamp, one handle, wax pills, a spoon and a candle.

The eric set holds about 30 pills in a glass bottle. The ob1 set holds about 30 in a pill case, in a storage box that Sanby says suits a gift.

## Which designs are there?

**eric offers Fountain Pen, Lily of the Valley and Notebook; ob1 offers Amaoto Soda, Haochi Letter and Retro Post.** All six set stamps have a 25 mm round face and cost 5,830 yen for eric (about US$36.90) and 6,160 yen for ob1 (about US$38.99) with tax. A set box measures 204 × 32 × 120 mm.

## Can you buy the stamps and wax separately?

**Yes. Sanby sells single stamps and wax pills.** The eric line has seven single stamps: the three set designs plus Pudding, Lighthouse, Socks and Holiday. The Socks stamp has a 25 mm square face and the Holiday a 30 mm round one. Five ob1 stamps are listed: Amaoto Soda, Haochi Letter, Retro Post, Bunnies and Mendako.

| | Price with tax |
|---|---|
| eric single stamp, five designs | 2,585 yen (about US$16.36) |
| eric single stamp, Socks and Holiday | 3,410 yen (about US$21.58) |
| ob1 single stamp | 2,585 yen (about US$16.36) |
| ob1 wax pills, about 100 | 891 yen (about US$5.64) |

Prices are Japanese prices at 158 yen to the dollar. Sanby says the eric selection pill packs are available until they run out; the ob1 packs add white to the three set colors.

## How do you use the set?

**Melt 3 to 4 pills in the spoon over the candle, pour, then press the stamp.** That quantity is Sanby's guide per seal, and it says single colors or a mix of colors both turn out well. Sanby warns that the wax is not for a glue gun.

## Is it safe?

**Take the usual care with hot wax.** Sanby says melted wax is very hot, so avoid burns; take care with fire and do not use it near flammable things; do not leave while working; avoid children working alone; and do not use it for anything other than its purpose. The pills are not food, so beware of swallowing them. For envelope seals without a flame, see the [Rifle Paper Co. Gemma envelope seals](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/rifle-paper-co-gemma-envelope-seals/).

## How do the eric and ob1 sets differ?

**They differ in designs and in the wax colors the artist picked.** Both sets hold the same five parts and a 25 mm round face, but the eric wax pills are chosen by the artist from three colors and the ob1 pack adds white to its three set colors. The ob1 set costs 330 yen more than the eric set (6,160 against 5,830 yen with tax), and comes in a storage box that Sanby says suits a gift. For the artists' other products, see the [eric absorbent stamps](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/sanby-eric-absorbent-stamp/) and the [ob1 acrylic stand stamps](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/sanby-ob1-acrylic-stand-stamp/).

## Where is it made, and what does it cost?

**Sanby's page doesn't give a country of manufacture.** Sanby is a Japanese company founded in 1921 with its head office in Osaka and bases in Thailand and Taiwan. The sets fall in our $$$ band ($20–75) and the single stamps and wax pills in $$ or $$$ depending on the design.
