## What is the Sakura Pigma Calligrapher?

**It's a disposable calligraphy marker from Sakura with a flat, chisel-shaped nylon nib and archival Pigma ink.** Sakura of America pitches it as an all-in-one lettering tool, so you need only the pen and good paper.

Hold the flat nib at a fixed angle and the stroke changes width with direction, the way a broad-edged dip pen does. Sakura says the hard nylon makes crisp edges and sharp hairlines.

## Sakura Pigma Calligrapher specs

**Three nib widths and six ink colors, all with Sakura's archival Pigma ink.**

| Spec | Pigma Calligrapher |
|---|---|
| Nib widths | 1, 2 and 3 mm |
| Nib | Flat, hard nylon |
| Ink | Archival Pigma pigment, waterproof and fade-resistant |
| Colors | Black, red, royal blue, hunter green, sepia, purple |
| Refillable | No |
| Black 3-pack | One each of 1, 2 and 3 mm |
| Length | Not published |

Sakura doesn't publish the pen's length or weight. Spectrum Store lists the 2 mm black as code XSDK-C20049.

![Pigma Calligrapher nib widths drawn to scale, 1, 2 and 3 mm, with the thick and thin strokes each makes at a 45-degree pen angle](https://stationerytimes.com/images/sakura-pigma-calligrapher-nib-widths.svg)

*At a 45° pen angle, straight strokes come out at about 70% of the nib width (geometry, not a measurement).*

## Which width should you use?

**Sakura matches each width to a job: 1 mm for envelopes, 2 mm for place cards, 3 mm for titles and signage.**

| Width | Sakura's suggested use | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 mm | Envelopes | Addresses, small italic hands |
| 2 mm | Place cards | Names, short headings |
| 3 mm | Titles and signage | Practice sheets, signs |

For learning, wider is easier. A 3 mm nib makes the thick and thin parts of each letter obvious, so you can see your pen angle drifting.

## Does the nylon nib hold its edge?

**Sakura says it does: the hard nylon withstands heavy pressure and constant use and keeps making crisp lines.** Its product page contrasts this with calligraphy markers whose tips wear down and draw heavier and heavier.

That claim matters because felt chisel tips soften with use. Our hands-on slot above is where we'll check it.

## Pigma Calligrapher vs Pilot Parallel

**Pick the Calligrapher for a cheap, no-setup start; pick the Pilot Parallel when you want sharper hairlines, refills and ink choice.**

| | Pigma Calligrapher | [Pilot Parallel](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pilot-parallel-pen/) |
|---|---|---|
| Nib | Flat nylon chisel | Two parallel steel plates |
| Ink | Archival pigment, waterproof | Pilot Parallel cartridges, 12 colors |
| Refillable | No | Yes |
| Widths | 1, 2, 3 mm | 1.5, 2.4, 3.8, 6.0 mm (US) |
| Price band | $ | $$ |

For brush lettering instead of broad-edge hands, see the [Sakura Pigma Brush](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/sakura-pigma-brush/). Our [best calligraphy pens for beginners](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/best-calligraphy-pens-for-beginners/) compares both styles.

## How much does it cost?

**About US$2 a pen in the black 3-pack on Amazon US when we checked on October 23, 2026, our $ band (under $5).** That pack had 661 ratings averaging 4.0 stars.

That's a lower average than the 4.6 stars of the Pigma Brush 3-pack on the same day, which is one more reason we plan our own wear test.

## How do you hold a chisel-tip pen?

**Keep the nib's edge at one fixed angle to the writing line, about 45° for italic, and let the stroke direction make the thick and thin.** Don't twist the pen as you write.

Ruled guidelines help: for italic, letter bodies are often about five nib widths tall, which is 5 mm with the 1 mm pen and 15 mm with the 3 mm. Archival pigment ink means you can erase pencil guidelines once the ink is dry.

## Where is the Pigma Calligrapher made?

**Sakura doesn't say on the pages we could read.** Sakura of America's product page and the Amazon listing give no country, and the Calligrapher doesn't appear on Sakura Color Products' Japanese Pigma page. Sakura is a Japanese company based in Osaka.

## Frequently asked questions

### What size Pigma Calligrapher should a beginner buy?

The 3-pack with 1, 2 and 3 mm. Practice letterforms with the 3 mm, which shows thick and thin strokes clearly, then use the 1 mm for envelopes.

### Is Pigma Calligrapher ink waterproof?

Sakura of America says the archival Pigma ink is waterproof and fade-resistant on most papers once dry.

### Can you refill a Pigma Calligrapher?

No. Sakura's Amazon listing says the pen is designed for ease of use with Pigma ink, so it isn't refillable.

### Does the Pigma Calligrapher nib wear down?

Sakura says the hard nylon nib withstands heavy pressure and constant use and keeps making crisp lines, unlike calligraphy markers whose tips soften.

### Can you use the Pigma Calligrapher on fabric?

Sakura of America doesn't recommend it for fabrics that will be washed, and says it hasn't been evaluated for use on skin.

### Pigma Calligrapher or Pilot Parallel pen?

The Calligrapher is a cheap, disposable marker with no setup; the Pilot Parallel is a refillable fountain-style pen with plate nibs that gives sharper hairlines and lets you change inks.
