> The Retro 51 Tornado is a twist-action metal rollerball from Retro 1951 of Texas, launched in 1997. A knurled cap turns to extend the tip. Goulet Pens lists it at 126.1 mm (4.96 in) and 29 g with an 11.9 mm body. It takes Retro 51's short capless refill, and Classic Lacquer models have a lacquered stainless steel barrel.

## What is the Retro 51 Tornado?

**The Tornado is a metal rollerball from Retro 1951 of Texas that you twist, not click: turning the knurled top extends and retracts the tip.** Retro 51 introduced it in 1997 in red, blue and green lacquer and calls it its signature pen. It has since appeared in many printed, plated and limited designs, as well as ballpoint, fountain pen and pencil versions.

Retro 51 is a small American brand founded in 1990. Its Our Story page says the founder retired in 2021 and three collectors took over, after a late-2019 announcement that the company would close. Each pen ships in a printed tube that doubles as a pen stand.

![Retro 51 Tornado, uni-ball ZENTO Signature and Fisher Space Pen Bullet compared to scale](https://stationerytimes.com/images/retro-51-tornado-size.svg)

*The Tornado is a full-size pen: as long as a capped ZENTO Signature and about 7 g heavier.*

## How does the twist mechanism work?

**Turn the knurled top and the rollerball tip comes out; turn it back and the tip retracts.** There's no cap to lose and no click, which is part of why the pen is popular as a desk and gift pen. The knurling, a fine diamond pattern on the top, is a Retro 51 trademark.

Goulet Pens says the stock black refill writes a medium line. Twisting takes a moment longer than clicking; if you'd rather pull a cap, the [uni-ball ZENTO Signature](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/uni-ball-zento-signature/) is a metal pen with a magnetic cap. For why big signatures still go down in black ink, see our story on [stationery through a life](https://stationerytimes.com/stories/stationery-through-a-life/).

## What refill does the Tornado take?

**Retro 51's own short capless rollerball refill, sold in 3-packs in black, blue, green, red and purple.** Dromgoole's and Pen Chalet say any "Parker style" refill also fits, which opens up gel and ballpoint options. The Unsharpen database names the Schmidt P8127 (0.7 mm) and the slightly thinner P8126.

To change it, unscrew the chrome front section, not the knurled top, and slide the old refill out, as Unsharpen explains. Retro 51's FAQ says the tightly wound end of the spring goes onto the new refill first; a reversed spring is the usual reason a freshly refilled Tornado won't work.

For how the Parker-style format compares with other refill families, see our [pen refills explained](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pen-refills-explained/) guide.

## Which Tornado should you buy?

**For a first Tornado, a Classic Lacquer is the plain, solid-color version; the printed and plated lines cost more.**

| Line | What it is | Price band |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Lacquer | Solid metallic lacquer over stainless steel, 12 colors | $$$ |
| Vintage Metalsmith | Antiqued or printed finishes, such as Lincoln copper | $$$ to $$$$ |
| Big Shot | Thicker, heavier barrel, same twist action | $$$ to $$$$ |
| Retailer exclusives and Poppers | Limited themed editions sold through dealers | $$$ to $$$$ |

On October 22, 2026 Goulet's exclusive Fire & Dice 2e: Fighter rollerball, a numbered edition etched with tabletop-game icons and finished with stonewashed pewter trim, was 16th on its best-seller list, with the matching Tornado pencil 15th. Retro 51 also makes Tornado ballpoints, fountain pens and pencils. For a smaller metal pen you can pocket, the [Fisher Space Pen Bullet](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/fisher-space-pen-bullet/) is 30 mm shorter closed; for a slim classic, see the [Cross Classic Century](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/cross-classic-century/).

## Is the Tornado a gel pen or a rollerball?

**A rollerball: Retro 51 sells it as one, and the Schmidt refills that Unsharpen lists for it are liquid-ink rollerball refills.** A rollerball usually writes darker and smoother than a ballpoint but dries more slowly. Our [gel vs ballpoint vs rollerball](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/gel-vs-ballpoint-vs-rollerball/) guide explains the difference, and the Parker-style fit lets you swap in a gel refill if you prefer.

## Where is the Retro 51 Tornado made?

**Retro 51 doesn't say; the Unsharpen pen database gives Taiwan as the country of origin.** eBay item specifics for several Tornado models also say Taiwan, and a Peyton Street Pens listing says the components are made there. Retro 1951 itself is a Texas company that designs the pens.

## How much does a Retro 51 Tornado cost?

**The Classic Lacquer Tornado is in our $$$ price band, $20–75 per pen.** Printed, plated and limited editions cost more, and some Big Shot and licensed editions reach the $$$$ band, over $75.
