## Key takeaways

- Pentel Japan lists eight colors, XGFH-DA to XGFH-DZ, at ¥660 (about US$4.20) each with tax, and an eight-color set, GFH-D8ST, at ¥5,280 (about US$33).
- Paper Whisper lists the pen at 17 × 14 × 143 mm (0.7 × 0.6 × 5.6 in), with a polypropylene barrel and cap and a nylon brush tip, made in Japan.
- Six of the eight inks pair a base color with a different glitter, such as Black + Metallic Red; Gold and Silver are single metallic colors.

- Yoseka listed it at US$6 on October 29, 2026, in our $$ band ($5–20).

## What is the Pentel Dual Metallic Brush?

**It is a brush pen whose ink shows two colors at once: a bright base color and a different glitter.** Pentel's Japanese page explains that a vivid ink and plenty of glitter pigment are visible together, and that writing on dark paper makes the glitter color stand out.

The tip is a brush, so Pentel suggests it for lettering, coloring illustrations, planner headings and greeting cards. Pentel also sells a [Dual Metallic gel ballpoint](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pentel-dual-metallic-ballpoint/), which GetNavi reported became a standard line on October 31, 2025; this guide covers the brush.

## What are the specs?

## What colors does it come in?

**Eight: six two-tone pairs plus Gold and Silver.** The pairs are Black + Metallic Red, Blue + Metallic Green, Green + Metallic Blue, Orange + Metallic Yellow, Pink + Metallic Pink and Violet + Metallic Blue.

The name comes first for the color you see on white paper; the metallic one shows through on black. Yoseka and Cult Pens list the same eight.

## How do you start the ink flowing?

**Shake it with the cap on, then press the end of the barrel with the brush pointing down.** Paper Whisper's instructions say to keep pressing until ink reaches the tip, and to smooth the brush on scrap paper first.

If the line turns faint or watery, the glitter has settled: shake again and press a few more times. Paper Whisper also advises storing it capped and lying flat, and using it within one to two years.

## How is it different from a regular brush pen?

**It's made for sparkle on dark paper, not for black lettering.** Pentel's main brush pens, like the [Pentel Fude brush pen](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pentel-fude-brush-pen/) or the [Pentel Color Brush](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pentel-color-brush/), use a single ink and a refill cartridge.

| | Dual Metallic Brush | [Sharpie Metallic](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/sharpie-metallic-marker/) |
|---|---|---|
| Tip | Nylon brush | Fine point |
| Ink | Water-based, color + glitter | Permanent, opaque metallic |
| Best on | Dark paper, cards | Black paper, glass, plastic |
| Needs shaking | Yes | No |

The Sharpie column is from our guide to that marker. To add sparkle over ink you've already laid down, the clear glitter ink of the [Sun-Star Lameco glitter marker](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/sun-star-lameco-glitter-marker/) is another route.

## Is the ink pigment or dye?

**Pentel's spec sheet says water-based pigment, but its own description pairs a "dye ink" with glitter pigment.** Cult Pens calls it a pigment and dye hybrid and says it's acid-free and scrapbook-safe.

We read that as a dye-colored base carrying pigment glitter. Pentel doesn't claim it is waterproof or lightfast on the page we read, so don't count on either.

## Where is it made, and what does it cost in the US?

**In Japan, per Paper Whisper.** Pentel's page doesn't say.

Yoseka listed each color at US$6 on October 29, 2026, in our $$ band, and also sells the set of eight. Cult Pens in the UK listed it at £7.00 (about US$9.20). In Japan it costs ¥660 (about US$4.20).

## Frequently asked questions

### Why doesn't my Dual Metallic Brush sparkle?

The glitter settles. Pentel's Japanese FAQ explains that the ink mixes ordinary ink with metallic pigment, and Paper Whisper says to shake the capped pen firmly before use.

### Can you refill the Pentel Dual Metallic Brush?

No. Paper Whisper describes it as a single-use pen with no refill cartridge, and Pentel lists no refill for it.

### Does the Dual Metallic Brush work on black paper?

Yes, that's where it shines. Pentel says the glitter color stands out more on dark paper, so a Black + Metallic Red pen reads as red sparkle on black card.

### Is the Dual Metallic Brush ink pigment or dye?

Both, in effect. Pentel's spec lists water-based pigment ink, while its description pairs a dye ink with glitter pigment; Cult Pens calls it a pigment and dye hybrid.

### Can you blend Dual Metallic Brush colors?

Pentel says touching two brush tips together mixes the colors for a gradient, and that a water brush gives watercolor effects.

### Is the Pentel Dual Metallic Brush made in the USA?

No. Paper Whisper's specification gives Japan, and Pentel is a Japanese brand.
