## What is the Otto Hutt design 01?

**It is the entry model of Otto Hutt's fountain pen lines.** Otto Hutt is a German maker founded in 1920 in Pforzheim, a city known for jewelry and watches. The maker describes design 01 as classic, understated and reduced to the essentials, and as the model for anyone buying a first fine writing instrument.

Its larger siblings are the [design 04](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/otto-hutt-design-04-fountain-pen/) and the organic [design 06](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/otto-hutt-design-06-fountain-pen/). For other premium pens, see our [best luxury pens](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/best-luxury-pens/) roundup.

## What are its size, weight and materials?

**Otto Hutt lists 135 mm capped, 120 mm open, 10.1 mm across and about 25.3 g.** The body is brass lacquered in four layers and then matted (for the matt red); the cap sleeve is satin brass with a ruthenium coating, and the fittings carry the same coating. Otto Hutt says the cap can also be sterling silver, or brass coated in rose gold.

## What nib and filling system does it have?

**A steel nib with the Otto Hutt logo, filled with a converter.** The nib comes in extra fine, fine, medium and broad, and each pen is checked for function, line width and flow before it ships, according to Otto Hutt. A converter is included so you can use bottled ink. The page doesn't name the cartridge standard. For how converters work, see [fountain pen converters explained](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/fountain-pen-converters-explained/), and for line widths [fountain pen nib sizes explained](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/fountain-pen-nib-sizes-explained/).

## What colors and prices does it come in?

**Four matt colors at €150 (about US$168), and guilloche versions at €175 (about US$196).** On October 31, 2026 Otto Hutt's shop data listed red, black, sage green and blue in matt lacquer with a ruthenium cap at €150 (about US$168), and black with thread-pattern guilloche and a platinum or rose gold trim at €175 (about US$196). That puts it in our $$$$ band (over $75). Conversions use US$1.12 to the euro. Otto Hutt notes shipping, tax and customs duties are extra.

## How does it compare with designs 04 and 06?

**It is lighter, slimmer and cheaper, with a simpler nib choice.** Design 01 is 10.1 mm across and about 25.3 g; design 04 is 11.8 mm and about 38.7 g, and design 06 is 14 mm and about 44.9 g. Otto Hutt's steel-nib prices start at €150 (about US$168) for design 01, €220 (about US$246) for design 04 and €215 (about US$241) for design 06. Only 04 and 06 list an 18-carat gold nib. If you want the lightest pen of the three and are happy with steel, design 01 is the one to start with.

## What comes in the box?

**A converter, a cleaning cloth, instructions and a certificate.** Otto Hutt's page lists a matching converter for your own ink, a silver or microfiber cleaning cloth, the instructions and a certificate. The pen arrives with the nib you chose in the configurator, so pick the line width first: a medium steel nib is the default on the page we read.

## Is every pen unique?

**Otto Hutt says so: each pen has a code engraved in the cap.** The code is six or seven digits, recorded on the guarantee card, and the maker says it ties the pen to its owner. Engraving of your own text is an option on the clip or beside it.

## Where is design 01 made?

**In Germany, per Otto Hutt.** Its craftsmanship page says pens earn the Made in Germany label only after a hand inspection, and its English home page says production happens only at its own Black Forest site. The company's timeline records the 1995 move to Birkenfeld, the 2015 move to Königsbach-Stein and the 2023 Faber-Castell purchase; see [Faber-Castell's history](https://stationerytimes.com/stories/faber-castell-history/) for the parent.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is design 01 a good first luxury fountain pen?

Otto Hutt says so itself: its page calls design 01 the model for people buying their first fine writing instrument. It is the cheapest of the three design lines we cover, with a steel nib and a converter included.

### Can design 01 have a gold nib?

Not according to Otto Hutt's page: it lists steel nibs only, in extra fine, fine, medium and broad. Designs 04 and 06 offer an 18-carat gold nib for about €165 (about US$185) more.

### Does the pen take cartridges?

Otto Hutt's page says a converter is included for your own ink but doesn't say which cartridge standard fits, so we can't say. Ask the maker before buying cartridges.

### Can I have it engraved?

Yes. Otto Hutt offers engraving on the clip or 90 degrees to the right of it, added in the order summary. Its own code is engraved in the cap regardless.

### How heavy is it compared with the other Otto Hutt designs?

At about 25.3 g it is the lightest of the three: design 04 is about 38.7 g and design 06 about 44.9 g.

### What is thread-pattern guilloche?

Guilloche is a machine-engraved pattern from the jewelry trade. Otto Hutt, based near the jewelry city of Pforzheim, says it runs the technique with CNC control, and sells design 01 with a thread-pattern version at a higher price.

### Who owns Otto Hutt now?

Otto Hutt's English home page says Faber-Castell acquired Robert E. Huber GmbH and the Otto Hutt brand in 2023.
