## What is Organics Studio Nitrogen?

**It's a royal blue fountain pen ink from Organics Studio, a small US ink maker, known above all for its heavy red sheen.** Mountain of Ink says it belongs to the company's Elements ink line.

Goulet's own review says almost everyone in the fountain pen world has heard of it, for the richness of the sheen and its never-quite-dry reputation. On October 22, 2026, it was No. 64 on Goulet Pens' best-seller list.

![Organics Studio Nitrogen dry time to scale: 30 seconds in Goulet's test and 60 seconds in Mountain of Ink's, against about 30 to 35 for Diamine Oxblood](https://stationerytimes.com/images/organics-studio-nitrogen-dry-time.svg)

*Nitrogen dries slowly; a left-hander or a fast note-taker will notice.*

## How does Nitrogen look on paper?

**Bright blue where the ink is thin, with a red to purple metallic sheen wherever it pools.** Goulet's review says that on some papers you see so much sheen you might not know the ink is blue.

Paper matters: coated sheets such as [Tomoe River](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/tomoe-river-paper/) hold the dye on the surface and show the most sheen. On absorbent copy paper you get more of the blue.

## Why do people complain about Nitrogen?

**Because it smears, stains and dries slowly.** Mountain of Ink loved it at first, then wrote in 2021 that after three years it still smeared even after drying for days.

Goulet calls it a very, very wet ink, recommends deep cleaning any pen it's used in, and warns of hard starts after a pen sits. A flush such as [Goulet Pen Flush](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/goulet-pen-flush/) helps, and our [how to clean a fountain pen](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/how-to-clean-a-fountain-pen/) guide walks through it.

## Is Nitrogen good for everyday writing?

**For journaling and letters, yes; for quick notes you close straight away, no.** Goulet's review says it doesn't recommend Nitrogen for writing sessions where you pack up the paper right after writing.

Its colour is a conventional blue, so Goulet adds that it looks more professional than some more eccentric inks. Goulet's verdict is that the sheen is worth the hassle, while Mountain of Ink changed its mind after three years of smudges.

## Which pens suit Nitrogen?

**A pen that writes on the dry side, used often.** Goulet found the flow gushing even with an extra-fine nib, so a very wet pen makes the smearing worse.

Because it can hard-start after sitting, it suits a pen you use daily rather than one that waits in a drawer. Clear demonstrator pens and converters may need a deep clean to stay clear, given how much dye the ink carries.

## How does it compare with other sheening blues?

**Nitrogen has more sheen than most rivals, and no water resistance.** Mountain of Ink compared it with Akkerman #5 Shocking Blue and Diamine Majestic Blue and found both had less sheen.

If you want a saturated blue with a red sheen that behaves more like a standard ink, see [Diamine Blue Velvet](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/diamine-blue-velvet/); for a clean, low-maintenance blue, [Pilot Iroshizuku Kon-peki](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pilot-iroshizuku-kon-peki/).

## How long does a bottle last?

**About 68 fills of a 0.8 ml converter.** A 55 ml bottle fills a TWSBI ECO, at about 1.76 ml, around 31 times.

## Where is Organics Studio Nitrogen made?

**In the United States: Mountain of Ink reports the label says it's handmade in Maryland.** Goulet's listing doesn't give an origin.

Organics Studio's own website wasn't working when we checked on October 22, 2026, so we couldn't read the maker's description.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does Organics Studio Nitrogen smear?

It's a very wet, heavily saturated ink, and the sheen is dye sitting on the paper's surface. Goulet says heavily inked areas may never fully dry, and Mountain of Ink found it smearing days later.

### What paper shows Nitrogen's sheen best?

Coated, ink-resistant papers such as Tomoe River and Rhodia. Mountain of Ink saw sheen in all five nib sizes on Tomoe River and on other papers too.

### Is Organics Studio Nitrogen safe for fountain pens?

It's made for them, but reviewers advise regular deep cleaning because of how much dye it holds, and report hard starts after a pen sits unused.

### What colour is Organics Studio Nitrogen?

A bright royal blue with a red sheen, per Goulet's listing. Goulet's review calls it a deep cerulean blue with a reddish-purple metallic sheen.

### Is Organics Studio Nitrogen waterproof?

No. Goulet's spec sheet lists it as not water resistant, so a spill will wash it out.

### Is Organics Studio ink made in the USA?

Yes, by the label: Mountain of Ink reports that the bottle says it's handmade in Maryland.
