## Key takeaways

- The body is 55.5 × 25 × 13.5 mm and holds 5 mm × 8 m of tape; it is single use, not refillable.
- Midori says the film is only 12 microns thick, and the dot pattern lets the glue break cleanly at the end of a pull.
- A transparent head helps you see where the glue starts, and one transparent side of the case shows the amount left.
- Midori lists 440 yen with tax (about US$2.78) and says made in China; there are black, white, maroon and clear versions.
- Midori recommends using it at 15 to 35 °C and says pulling fast can cause skipped transfer or slack tape.

## What is the Midori XS Tape Glue?

**It is the smallest tape runner in Midori's XS range.** XS comes from extra small, and the series is built around tiny stationery that still works, small enough for a pocket. This runner is a single-use tape glue with a body 55.5 mm long, 25 mm high and 13.5 mm deep. It sits beside the [Midori XS Compact Scissors](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/midori-xs-compact-scissors-serrated/), the [XS Correction Tape](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/midori-xs-correction-tape/) and the [XS Tape Cutter](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/midori-xs-tape-cutter/).

## What are the specs?

**5 mm by 8 m of dot tape in a 55.5 × 25 × 13.5 mm body.** Midori lists:

| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Tape | 5 mm × 8 m, use-up type |
| Body | 55.5 × 25 × 13.5 mm (H25 × W55.5 × D13.5) |
| Package | 116 × 52 × 15 mm |
| Material | polycarbonate, POM and silicone |
| Film thickness | 12 microns |
| Country of origin | China |
| Price | 440 yen with tax (about US$2.78) |

Prices are Japanese list prices at 158 yen to the dollar.

## How does it work?

**A transparent head and dot-shaped glue.** Midori says the clear head makes it easy to judge where the glue will start, a boon for fine work. The adhesive is laid in dots, so at the end of a pull it breaks away crisply without stringing. The case is clear on one face, so you can see how much tape remains.

## Why is the film so thin?

**Because that is how 8 m fits in a body this small.** Midori says the film is only 12 microns thick, yet the roll is a full 8 m. The company also says the body's shape was refined to fit the hand, with an easy, steady pull.

## What are the cautions?

**Pull slowly and keep it between 15 and 35 °C.** Midori says not to use it for anything other than bonding paper, that pulling fast can cause the tape not to transfer or to go slack, and that tilting the tip sideways, using it on curved surfaces or zigzagging causes poor transfer. Excess force on the tip can break it, and the cap should be closed after use. Keep it away from heat, humidity and sunlight.

## How much does it cost per meter?

**About 55 yen a meter, against 32 for a refillable big runner.** By our arithmetic 440 yen for 8 m is 55 yen a meter. Tombow's PiT Air body costs 506 yen for 16 m, about 32 yen a meter, and its refill about 24. You pay more per meter for the XS because the body is tiny and single use. For a pencil case that is often the point.

## How does it compare with bigger runners?

**It trades length for carryability.** Tombow's [PiT Air](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/tombow-pit-air-tape-runner/) has 16 m of refillable tape, and KOKUYO's [Gloo tape glue](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/kokuyo-gloo-tape-glue/) 8 or 14 m. The XS has 8 m of 5 mm tape and is not refillable.

## Where is it made, and what does it cost?

**Midori's store page lists China.** At 440 yen with tax (about US$2.78), the runner is in our $ band (under $5). The page says XS was renamed from Color Stationery in October 2016.
