# How to Stop Fountain Pen Ink Bleeding Through Paper

> Change one thing at a time: write on sized fountain-pen paper such as Midori MD, Rhodia or Tomoe River, switch to a finer nib or a drier ink, and press lightly. Test on a sheet you trust to find the culprit, and put a guard sheet behind thin pages. Paper weight helps, but sizing matters more.

- Made in (Midori MD Notebook A5, 176 pages (lined, grid or blank)): Japan. Midori's Japanese MD PRODUCT store gives 原産国 (country of origin) Made in Japan for the A5, as did the older Midori online store listing for the lined A5 (15294006). The Journal Shop, Galen Leather and Boston General Store agree. Source: https://md-product.com/products/md-notebook-a5
- Made in (Hobonichi Techo Original Book, A6): Not stated. Hobonichi's Japanese store listing for the 2027 English Original gives size, weight, pages and paper but no country of manufacture (it names one only for a free charm, made in China), and we found no retailer spec sheet that states it for the Original Book. Hunter Paper Co. says its Original Avec book is made in Japan by Hobonichi, but that is a different product. Check the back of the book.
- Made in (Rhodia No. 16 DotPad, A5, top-stapled, black cover (16559C)): France. Rhodia says all its notepads are manufactured at its plant near Mulhouse, Alsace; its 2024 French press kit places the plant at Illzach, on the edge of Mulhouse, since 1997. Retailers The Journal Shop, Dromgooles, Bruneau and Wonderpens also list the No. 16 as made in France. Source: https://www.bloc-rhodia.com/gb/page/rhodia-universe/our-manufacturing-secrets
- Made in (Clairefontaine 1951 Staplebound Notebook A5, 48 sheets): France. Clairefontaine's French product page for the Carnet piqué collection 1951 says 'Fabriqué en France'; Gentleman Stationer and Hunter Paper Co. agree. Galaxus lists Morocco as the origin of a 1951 Back to Basics A5 notebook, so check the label. Source: https://www.clairefontaine.com/fr/3029-1615-carnet-pique-collection-1951-195136c.html
- Made in (Moleskine Classic Notebook, Hard Cover, Large): China. Per retailer spec sheets: Galaxus/Digitec list China for the Large and Pocket hard covers, and the Australian promotional supplier Good Things lists China for the XL hard cover. Moleskine's Italian product page doesn't state the country, and Galaxus blocked our reader when we rechecked on October 20, 2026. ## Key takeaways

- Ferris Wheel Press names 3 causes that work together: the nib, the ink and the paper, plus heavy writing pressure.
- Fountain-pen pads run from 52 g/m² (Tomoe River S) to 80 g/m² (Rhodia No. 16, Midori MD Paper), so weight alone doesn't predict bleed-through.
- Galen Leather says 68 g/m² Tomoe River shows bleed-through and ghosting less than the 52 g/m² sheet, while the lighter one shows sheen better.
- The Moleskine Classic's 70 g/m² paper is the lightest common hardcover paper in our notebook guide, and reviewers report feathering and bleed with wet inks.
- Pilot warns that fax, thermal and inkjet-coated papers can scrape coating into a nib and clog it, a different problem from bleeding.

## Why does fountain pen ink bleed through paper?

**Because fountain pen ink is thin and water-based, and on absorbent paper it wicks along the fibres and through the sheet.** Ferris Wheel Press, an ink maker, says feathering comes from paper that is too absorbent or not sized or coated enough, and bleed-through from paper that is too thin or absorbent, or a very wet ink and nib. It names three causes that work together, nib, ink and paper, and adds heavy pressure as a fourth.

## What do feathering, bleed-through and ghosting look like?

**Feathering is fuzzy edges on the front, bleed-through is ink on the back, and ghosting is only a shadow of the writing.** Ferris Wheel Press describes feathering as soft, spidery edges and less definition, as if the line were smudged even when dry, because ink spreads along the paper fibres. Bleed-through leaves actual ink marks on the reverse, and in bad cases transfers to the next page. Ghosting means you can see the writing through the sheet without any ink reaching the back. A little ghosting is normal on thin paper such as Tomoe River, and it is a trade-off for low weight rather than a fault. Name the problem first, because the fixes differ: feathering points at absorbent paper, a broad nib or a wet ink, while bleed-through also points at thin paper.

## How do you stop fountain pen ink bleeding?

**Change one thing at a time, starting with the paper, and test against a sheet you trust.** Ferris Wheel Press suggests keeping a reliable notebook as a control: if the problem disappears there, the paper is the culprit.

1. **Test the same pen on a sheet you trust.** Write a few lines in a notebook that has never given you trouble. If the lines stay crisp there, the paper you were using is the problem, so start with step 2.

![The same blue writing feathering on plain white paper but staying crisp on a cream fountain pen notebook page](https://stationerytimes.com/images/how-to-stop-fountain-pen-ink-bleeding-test-on-a-trusted-sheet.svg?v=078fbadc)

*The control test: if a trusted sheet stays crisp, change the paper first. Original illustration made for this guide. © Stationery Times.*

2. **Switch to paper sold for fountain pens.** Midori MD, Rhodia, Clairefontaine and Tomoe River paper are sized or coated so ink sits on the surface instead of soaking into the fibres. The section below compares them.

3. **Use a finer or drier nib.** A broad nib or a wet feed lays down more ink than weak paper can hold.

*A finer nib puts less ink on the page. Original illustration made for this guide. © Stationery Times.*

4. **Try a drier, less saturated ink.** Wet, heavily saturated inks show up weak paper first. Change the ink only after the paper and nib, so you know which change worked.

*A drier, lighter ink spreads less on absorbent paper. Original illustration made for this guide. © Stationery Times.*

5. **Write lightly.** Pressing down pushes out more ink and opens the nib. Pilot says a fountain pen needs almost no pressure, so let the pen rest on the page under its own weight.

*Let the pen glide: pressing pushes out more ink. Original illustration made for this guide. © Stationery Times.*

6. **Slide a guard sheet behind thin pages.** A spare sheet behind the page you are writing on catches any ink that comes through. It protects the next page but does not stop the bleed itself.

**Avoid coated office paper such as fax, thermal and inkjet paper.** Pilot warns that its coating can clog the nib, which is a different problem from bleeding. Ferris Wheel Press is the source for steps 1 to 4 and 6, and Pilot for step 5.

## Which paper stops fountain pen ink bleeding?

**Paper made and sized for fountain pens, whatever its weight.** Midori says its MD Paper resists feathering and bleed-through, and the Rhodia No. 16 and MD Paper pads are both 80 g/m². Clairefontaine's staplebound notebooks use 90 g/m² paper. Tomoe River S is only 52 g/m² yet resists bleed-through because the sheet is coated and sized, though writing shows through and dries slowly. Galen Leather says the 68 g/m² version shows bleed-through and ghosting less, while the 52 g/m² shows sheen better.

The Moleskine Classic Large uses 70 g/m² paper, the lightest common hardcover paper in our [best notebooks for fountain pens](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/best-notebooks-for-fountain-pens/) guide, and reviewers report feathering and bleed with wet inks. For the weights themselves, see [paper weight explained](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/paper-weight-gsm-explained/). The guides for each notebook are the [Midori MD Notebook A5](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/midori-md-notebook-a5/), [Hobonichi Techo Original](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/hobonichi-techo-original/), [Rhodia No. 16](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/rhodia-no-16-dot-pad/), [Clairefontaine 1951](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/clairefontaine-1951-staplebound-notebook/) and [Moleskine Classic](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/moleskine-classic-notebook/).

## Which nib and ink bleed least?

**A fine nib with a drier, less saturated ink.** Ferris Wheel Press says broader nibs and wetter feeds lay down more ink, and that a wet or heavily saturated ink is less forgiving on everyday paper, so a different ink can fix the same pen and paper. Our [nib sizes explained](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/fountain-pen-nib-sizes-explained/) and [fountain pen ink properties explained](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/fountain-pen-ink-properties-explained/) guides cover both. If a pen skips after writing on coated paper, see [how to fix a fountain pen that won't write](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/how-to-fix-a-fountain-pen-that-wont-write/).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between feathering, bleed-through and ghosting?

Feathering is ink spreading sideways along the fibres into fuzzy lines. Bleed-through is ink reaching the back of the sheet. Ghosting is only seeing the writing through the page, which Ferris Wheel Press calls normal in small amounts.

### Does heavier paper always stop bleeding?

No. Tomoe River at 52 g/m² resists bleed-through because it is coated and sized, while some 70 g/m² papers bleed. Sizing, which keeps ink on the surface, matters as much as weight.

### Is Moleskine paper good for fountain pens?

Usually not. Its 70 g/m² paper often feathers and bleeds with fountain pen ink in published reviewer tests, especially with wet inks and broad nibs.

### Will a guard sheet stop bleed-through?

No. Ferris Wheel Press says a guard sheet behind the page won't stop ink bleeding through, but it keeps the next page from being marked.

### Why does my fountain pen feather on copy paper but not in my notebook?

Copy paper is usually more absorbent and less sized than fountain-pen paper, so ink wicks into the fibres. Try a finer nib or a drier ink, or keep a notebook made for fountain pens.

### Can I write with a fountain pen on receipts or inkjet photo paper?

Pilot advises against it: fax, thermal and inkjet-coated papers can scrape coating into the nib and clog it, so flush the pen if it starts to skip.
