## Key takeaways

- Montblanc recommends cleaning a fountain pen about every 3 months and having it cleaned professionally once a year.
- Sailor says to flush every 2 to 3 months even with frequent use, Platinum about once a month, and Pelikan once a year for a pen used daily.
- Montblanc names perfume, detergent and hand sanitizer as substances that can damage precious resin; Sailor says alcohol wipes can make resin brittle enough to crack.
- Pelikan advises buying ink in small amounts and using it within 12 to 18 months, and filling an occasionally used pen only halfway.
- Makers disagree on flying: Pilot says carry the pen nib up, empty or full, while Montblanc says its pens must be filled and carried nib up.

## How do you take care of a collector pen?

**Keep it out of sunlight, heat and solvents, wipe it with the cloth its maker names, flush it with plain water on a schedule, and empty and dry it before long storage.** Makers agree on those points but differ on how often to flush. Montblanc says about every three months, Sailor says every 2 to 3 months, Platinum says about once a month for the nib section, and Pelikan says once a year for a pen used daily and every six months for one used now and then.

The flushing method is the same as for any fountain pen; see [how to clean a fountain pen](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/how-to-clean-a-fountain-pen/). What changes for a collector pen is the outside, the ink and where it sits between uses. Sailor adds that daily writing is the best maintenance, because ink that stops moving most often dries inside the feed.

Here is what each maker says, by material:

| Material | Maker | Do | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Urushi and maki-e lacquer | Pilot (Namiki) | Wipe with a soft dry cloth; store out of the light | Dryness and ultraviolet light, which Pilot says fade it |
| Urushi lacquer | Nakaya | Keep it in a pouch or pen case; wipe ink off at once with a soft damp cloth | Direct sunlight and extremely dry rooms |
| Precious resin | Montblanc | Wipe with a soft lint-free cloth, damp for ink spots | Solvents such as perfume, detergent and hand sanitizer |
| Resin barrels and caps | Sailor | Wipe with a soft cloth or tissue | Alcohol wipes, which Sailor says can make resin brittle and crack it |
| Wood barrels | Pilot, Sailor | Wipe off water at once and dry it in shade | Soaking, strong sun, close fluorescent light, varnish, wax, alcohol or detergent cloths |
| Sterling silver (Silvern) | Pilot | Use a silver polishing cloth if it darkens | Nothing else: Pilot says darkening is normal and the pen works as is |
| Any pen | Platinum | Wipe with a soft dry cloth | Wet cloths, metal polish and chemicals |

## Should you store a collector pen inked or empty?

**For anything longer than a few weeks, empty it, rinse the nib section and let it dry completely.** Nakaya, Montblanc and Pilot all say so. For an occasionally used piston pen, Pelikan says to fill it only halfway and to clean it before you use it again after a long rest.

1. **Empty the ink back into its bottle.** Hold the pen nib down over the bottle and turn the converter or piston until no more ink comes out. Montblanc says to remove all ink from a pen left unused for an extended period.

2. **Rinse the nib section in plain water.** Stand the nib section, never the lacquered or wooden barrel, in a glass of plain water and flush it until the water stays clear. Nakaya and Pilot both say to wash the pen before storing it; the full method is in [how to clean a fountain pen](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/how-to-clean-a-fountain-pen/).

3. **Let every part dry completely.** Lay the parts on a paper towel out of the sun. Nakaya says to let the nib section dry for more than half a day.

4. **Cap it and store it in a pouch or case.** Put the cap on and keep the pen somewhere cool, shaded and dry, in a pouch or padded case. Nakaya recommends a pouch or pen case and Montblanc a pouch. Next time, fill it with fresh ink, as Sailor advises.

## How do you clean the outside of a lacquer, resin or wooden pen?

**Use only a soft cloth, dry for lacquer and wood and lint-free and barely damp for ink on resin, and keep solvents away.** The table above gives each maker's rule by material.

1. **Wipe the body with a soft, dry cloth.** This is the everyday clean for lacquer, wood and most resin; Pilot, Sailor and Platinum all name a soft dry cloth.

![A hand wiping the barrel of a black lacquer pen with a folded soft white cloth](https://stationerytimes.com/images/how-to-care-for-collector-pens-wipe-with-a-soft-dry-cloth.svg?v=d525e4bf)

*A soft dry cloth is the everyday clean for every material. Original illustration made for this guide. © Stationery Times.*

2. **Lift fresh ink with a barely damp, lint-free cloth, if your maker allows it.** Montblanc says to use a damp lint-free cloth for ink spots on its resin, and Nakaya says to wipe ink off its lacquer at once with a soft damp cloth. Platinum says never to use a wet cloth, so check your maker first. Wipe off any water at once, especially on wood.

![A hand bringing a folded, barely damp white cloth down onto a blue ink spot on a black lacquer pen barrel](https://stationerytimes.com/images/how-to-care-for-collector-pens-lift-ink-with-a-damp-cloth.svg?v=b393af28)

*Only barely damp, and only where the maker allows it. Original illustration made for this guide. © Stationery Times.*

3. **Keep solvents away from the pen.** No alcohol wipes, perfume, detergent, hand sanitizer, metal polish, varnish or wax. Sailor says alcohol wipes can make resin brittle and crack it, and Montblanc names perfume, detergent and hand sanitizer.

Follow the maker of your pen: for the [Namiki Urushi Collection](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/namiki-urushi-collection/), [Namiki Yukari Collection](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/namiki-yukari-collection/) or [Pilot Custom Urushi](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pilot-custom-urushi/), that is Pilot's dry cloth.

## Where should you keep collector pens?

**Somewhere cool, shaded and dry, in a pouch or padded case, with the cap on.** Montblanc says to protect its pens from moisture, heat, sunlight and shock and to keep them in a pouch, and Pelikan says never to expose a pen to frost or extreme heat. Nakaya recommends its blue pouch or any pen case, and warns against extremely dry rooms as well as direct sun. Montblanc strongly recommends not posting the cap on the back of the pen, and says some editions can't post it at all.

The dealer fountainpen.de, in a forum-derived FAQ, advises padded slots so lacquer and fittings don't scratch and warns that plasticizers in PVC film can damage pens over time. Treat that as collector experience, not a maker rule. For the pens themselves, see [collectible pens](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/collectible-pens/) and the [Montblanc Meisterstück 149](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/montblanc-meisterstuck-149/) and [Pelikan Souverän M800](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pelikan-souveran-m800/) guides.

## Which inks are safest in a collector pen?

**Use the maker's own ink or a plain dye ink, and use it up.** Pilot tells owners to specify Pilot ink and warns that mixing inks or using old ink can cause faults. Nakaya recommends Platinum ink and says it can't support problems caused by other brands. Pelikan advises buying ink in small amounts and using it within 12 to 18 months, and says colored inks hold more pigment and need more frequent cleaning. See [fountain pen ink properties explained](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/fountain-pen-ink-properties-explained/) for dye versus pigment, and [how to fill a fountain pen](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/how-to-fill-a-fountain-pen/) for the filling systems.

## Can you travel or fly with a collector pen?

**Yes, but makers disagree on how full it should be, so check yours.** Pilot says modern feeds and pressurized cabins rarely leak, and recommends nib up and either emptied or filled to the top. Montblanc's service guide says its fountain pens must be filled on flights and carried with the nib upward. Nakaya says ink can seep from a nib when vibration or temperature change expands the air inside, and that this is not a fault.

## What about vintage celluloid and hard rubber pens?

**Makers' pages don't cover them, so rely on specialist sources and be cautious.** The Vintage Pens site says hard rubber should be kept from light and humidity, that fading cannot be reversed, and that polishing removes the faded surface along with imprints. The fountainpen.de FAQ says celluloid and hard rubber should avoid sunlight and never go in an ultrasonic bath, and that polishes can soften the surface. It also mentions old celluloid pens being stored filled with water every three months. We found no maker that recommends that, so we don't, and you should ask a restorer first.

## When should you send a pen to a repairer?

**Send it to its maker for a bent or rough nib, cracked or scratched lacquer, or ink that won't flow after flushing.** Sailor says to contact its user service if ink won't flow after washing, and Platinum says heavy dirt that a bath won't remove needs the maker to disassemble the pen; it also asks owners not to shake a pen with poor flow. Nakaya tunes its own nibs free unless parts need replacing, charges for nib replacement and re-lacquering, and repairs cracks with lacquered thread or kintsugi, though it won't accept pens from other makers or altered pens. Montblanc recommends a professional cleaning once a year. Never pull a nib out of its feed yourself; Nakaya says doing so may mean a paid re-tuning.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I use metal polish on a collector pen?

Only where a maker says so. Platinum says never to use metal polish or chemicals when wiping a pen, Pilot allows a silver polishing cloth on its sterling silver Silvern, and Nakaya says a gold nib may recover with a metal polishing cloth but to contact it if the nib is plated.

### Is hand sanitizer bad for a fountain pen?

For some, yes. Montblanc says perfume, detergents and hand sanitizer contain solvents that can damage its precious resin, and Sailor says alcohol wipes can make resin brittle and cracked.

### Should I post the cap on a collector pen?

Montblanc strongly recommends not attaching the cap to the rear end of its pens, because that may damage them, and says some editions cannot post a cap at all. Check your maker's guidance.

### Do collector pens need professional servicing even if they work?

Montblanc recommends a professional cleaning once a year. The Pilot, Pelikan, Platinum and Sailor pages we read give no service interval, only contact the maker when flow fails or the pen is damaged.

### Can I put a collector pen in an ultrasonic cleaner?

Not celluloid or hard rubber: the fountainpen.de FAQ says the color can dissolve. It also says an ultrasonic bath can attack the sealing compound of an old Montblanc, so ask a restorer first.

### Why is ink seeping from my pen's nib?

Nakaya says vibration or a temperature change can make the air inside expand and push ink out, that this does not mean the pen is broken, and that you can wipe it off. Tuning the nib can reduce it.

### Can I leave a lacquer pen in a display case under lights?

Prefer shade. Pilot says lacquer fades with dryness and ultraviolet light, and says fluorescent lamps close to a wooden pen can fade it. Nakaya says to avoid direct sunlight and extremely dry rooms.
