# How to Care for a Leather Notebook Cover, Step by Step

> Wipe a leather notebook cover with a slightly damp cloth, let it air-dry away from heat and sun, and never soak it. Vegetable-tanned covers such as Galen's take a little oil or balm about once a year, tested on a hidden spot first; Smythson says not to feed its finished leather at all.

- Made in (Smythson Panama Notebook, Navy (1204770)): United Kingdom. Smythson's US product page for the Navy Panama Notebook says Made in England, and describes it as handcrafted in England. Source: https://www.smythson.com/en-us/products/navy-panama-notebook-1204770
- Made in (Filofax Malden Personal Leather Organiser (6-ring, 23 mm), Navy): China. John Lewis's specification for the Malden Personal gives "Country of origin: China". ## Key takeaways

- Galen Leather, Smythson and Filofax agree on the basics: a slightly damp or dry cloth for dirt, no soaking, and no direct sun or strong heat.
- Galen Leather says to oil its vegetable-tanned covers about once a year, starting with a fingernail-sized amount on a hidden patch.
- Smythson, whose leathers are mostly chrome-tanned with a semi-aniline finish, says not to feed them with waxes, polishes or saddle soaps.
- Galen says never dry leather with a hair dryer, oven or other heat; Smythson says to avoid high temperatures.
- Galen says blue and purple leathers fade fastest in sunlight.

## How do you care for a leather notebook cover?

**Keep it dry and out of the sun, wipe it with a barely damp cloth, and condition it only if its maker says to.** The method depends on the leather. Galen Leather uses vegetable-tanned cowhide that is meant to darken and soften with use, and suggests oil or balm now and then. Smythson says most of its leathers are chrome-tanned with a semi-aniline finish, and tells owners not to feed them at all. Filofax covers both smooth leather and suede. Check your cover's maker first; the steps below say whose advice each one is.

## How do you clean a leather cover?

**With a slightly damp cloth, then air-drying, never soaking.** Every maker here agrees on this much.

1. **Wipe off dirt with a slightly damp cloth.** Galen Leather says to wipe gently so grime doesn't settle in the pores. Smythson says to wring the cloth out until it is only just damp, use warm, mild soapy water, then wipe again with clean water. Filofax suggests a damp cloth, and a good neutral leather cleaner on smooth leather.

2. **If the cover gets soaked, blot it with a dry, soft cloth.** Smythson warns that water soaking in can leave bubbles or marks that won't come out.

3. **Let it air-dry in the shade.** Galen Leather says never to use an oven, hair dryer or other heat to dry leather.

## How do you condition leather, and should you?

**Only vegetable-tanned leather, sparingly, and only after a test.** Galen Leather recommends it for vegetable-tanned leather; Smythson says waxes, polishes and saddle soaps can leave its leather sticky and damage it for good.

1. **Test on a hidden spot first.** Galen Leather says to try oil or balm where it won't show, such as an inside corner, because it changes the colour.

![A fingertip with conditioner touching an inside corner of an open brown cover, beside an open tin](https://stationerytimes.com/images/how-to-care-for-a-leather-notebook-cover-test-conditioner-on-a-hidden-spot.svg?v=0c5c9fea)

2. **Work in a little at a time, in small circles.** Galen Leather starts with a fingernail-sized amount of neatsfoot oil, olive oil or balm on your hand or a clean cloth, rubbed in circles. The leather may look darker at first and settles back over the next 24 hours. It suggests a light coat about once a year.

3. **Rub small scuffs with a fingertip.** For light wear marks, Galen Leather suggests a little skin oil from beside your nose, rubbed in small circles with light pressure, so the scuff darkens and fades.

## How should you store a leather cover?

**Cool, dry and out of strong light.**

1. **Keep it out of direct sun and bright light.** Galen Leather says blue and purple leathers fade the most; Smythson says long exposure to sun or other strong light can discolour and deform leather for good; Filofax says to avoid moisture, bright light and direct heat.

2. **Store it cool and dry.** Smythson suggests its soft bag in a cool, dry place. Give the cover a little space and air.

## Where do the makers disagree?

**On oil and on heat.**

| Question | Galen Leather | Smythson | Filofax |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leather | Vegetable-tanned cowhide, 2–3 mm | Mostly chrome-tanned, semi-aniline finish | Smooth leather and suede |
| Cleaning | Slightly damp cloth, then air-dry | Barely damp cloth with mild soapy water, then clean water | Damp cloth; neutral leather cleaner on smooth leather |
| Conditioning | Neatsfoot or olive oil or balm, about yearly | No waxes, polishes or saddle soaps | Not mentioned |
| Heat | No hair dryers or other heat | Avoid high temperatures | Avoid direct heat |

If your cover's maker publishes care notes, follow them over this summary. Our guides to the [Smythson Panama](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/smythson-panama-notebook/) and [Filofax Malden](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/filofax-malden-personal/) cover those makers' leather and sizes.

## Frequently asked questions

### What can I use to condition a leather notebook cover?

For vegetable-tanned leather, Galen Leather names neatsfoot oil, olive oil or its own leather balm. Smythson says not to put waxes, polishes or saddle soaps on its leathers. Test any product on a hidden spot first.

### How often should I oil a leather cover?

About once a year, says Galen Leather, as a light, even coat, and only on vegetable-tanned leather.

### Can I use a hair dryer on a leather cover?

No. Galen Leather says not to dry leather with ovens, hair dryers or other heat, and Smythson says to avoid high temperatures. Let a wet cover air-dry in the shade.

### Why does my leather cover look darker after oiling?

Fresh oil darkens leather for a while. Galen Leather says the colour can darken at first and returns to normal over the next 24 hours.

### How do I clean a suede organiser?

Filofax says to use a dirt-resistant finish and a dry brush on suede covers and interiors, and a good neutral leather cleaner on smooth leather.

### Do the metal parts need care too?

Filofax says metal features can be buffed and cleaned with a dry cloth. For brass pens and charms, see our brass care guide.
