Jenni Bick and The Journal Shop state Made in France for the tin of cartridges (read November 2, 2026). Jacques Herbin's English page for Perle Noire says Made in France for its La Perle des encres range, which includes a box of 6 cartridges, but it doesn't show the tin. ### J. Herbin Ink Cartridges in Aluminium Tin (6 international short cartridges) colors

- Ink colors (24 standard, 0 special edition): Vert de Gris; Gris Nuage; Perle Noire; Bleu Pervenche; Bleu Calanque; Diabolo Menthe; Bleu Myosotis; Eclat de Saphir; Bleu des Profondeurs; Bleu Nuit; Rouge Caroubier; Rouge Grenat; Vert Pre; Vert Empire; Vert Olive; Ambre de Birmanie; Lie de The; Terre de Feu; Poussiere de Lune; Orange Indien; Corail des Tropiques; Rose Cyclamen; Violette Pensee; Larmes de Cassis.
- Per Yoseka Stationery (https://yosekastationery.com/products/j-herbin-ink-cartridges-in-aluminium-tin), checked 2026-11-02. Names per Yoseka's 24 listed colors, spelled as Yoseka writes them without accents. The Journal Shop lists 23 (it adds Lierre Sauvage) and Jenni Bick says 25, so shops differ and some colors may be discontinued. Tints were sampled from Yoseka's ink swatch photos for each color, not from the cartridges. Shops stock different colors; check the listing.

## Key takeaways

- Yoseka, Jenni Bick, The Journal Shop and Cult Pens all say a tin holds 6 international standard short cartridges, and each tin is one ink color.
- The Journal Shop gives each cartridge as 3.8 cm long and 0.7 cm across (38 × 7 mm, 1.5 × 0.3 in).
- The color count depends on the shop: Yoseka lists 24 colors, Jenni Bick says 25 and The Journal Shop lists 23.
- Herbin's English Perle Noire page lists a box of 6 cartridges, and its newer Paris colors come as packaging-free boxes; we found no maker page that shows the aluminium tin.
- Yoseka and Jenni Bick listed a tin in our $$ band ($5–20) on November 2, 2026, and Cult Pens priced it at £4.80 (about US$6.30).

## What are J. Herbin cartridges in an aluminium tin?

**They are six standard international short cartridges of one ink, packed in a small cylindrical metal tin.** The Journal Shop calls each tin a small collectable object. Cult Pens calls it a tiny, neat cylindrical metal tin.

The ink is Herbin's La Perle des encres writing ink. Herbin's English page says the range is finely filtered so it won't clog pens, and the Perle Noire page lists a box of 6 cartridges, as covered in our [Perle Noire](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/herbin-perle-noire/) and [Poussiere de Lune](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/herbin-poussiere-de-lune/) guides.

## What size are the cartridges?

**The Journal Shop lists each cartridge as 38 mm long and 7 mm across.** The tin holds six. The drawing above is to that scale.

| Fact | What shops say | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Cartridges per tin | 6, one color | Yoseka, Jenni Bick, The Journal Shop, Cult Pens |
| Cartridge size | 3.8 × 0.7 cm (1.5 × 0.3 in) | The Journal Shop |
| Type | International standard short | All four |
| Tin | Cylindrical metal; aluminum per Jenni Bick and Yoseka | Cult Pens, Jenni Bick, Yoseka |
| Tin size | Not given by any source we read | |

## Which pens take them?

**Pens that accept standard international cartridges.** The Journal Shop says they fit most fountain pens that take the international standard size, and Herbin describes its cartridge boxes as for fountain pens and roller pens.

Our [cartridge roundup](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/best-fountain-pen-ink-cartridges/) cites Goulet Pens' chart: Kaweco, Pelikan, TWSBI, Visconti, Monteverde and Faber-Castell take standard international cartridges, and Pilot, Platinum, Sailor, LAMY, Parker and Cross use their own. We haven't tried a Herbin tin in each pen, and no source tests the short size in them.

## How many colors are there?

**It depends on the shop, from 23 to 25.** Yoseka lists 24 colors, Jenni Bick says 25 and The Journal Shop lists 23, including Lierre Sauvage, which Yoseka doesn't. Four of Yoseka's 24 showed as unavailable on November 2, 2026, and two are marked discontinued in its codes.

The colors run from Perle Noire and Gris Nuage to greens, blues, reds, browns and violets. The tints in the facts box come from Yoseka's swatch photos, not from the cartridges.

## What is the ink like?

**Retailers call it water-based, non-toxic and made with natural dyes.** Cult Pens adds neutral pH and fast-drying, and Jenni Bick says lightfast. These are retailer descriptions of the whole range, and we found no measured drying time, bleed-through or fade test.

For how dye ink differs from pigment, see [fountain pen ink properties explained](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/fountain-pen-ink-properties-explained/).

## Who is the tin for?

**It is for people who want to try Herbin colors in a standard cartridge pen without buying a bottle.** A tin gives six cartridges of one color, and Yoseka lists 24 colors.

Skip it if your pen takes Pilot, LAMY, Platinum, Sailor, Parker or Cross cartridges, which don't fit standard international ones.

## Where is it made, and what does it cost in the US?

**In France, per Jenni Bick and The Journal Shop.** Herbin's English page says Made in France for its writing-ink range, but we found no maker page that shows the tin itself.

Yoseka and Jenni Bick each listed a tin at US$8.00 on November 2, 2026, in our $$ band ($5–20). Cult Pens listed it at £4.80 (about US$6.30). Herbin's newer Paris colors come as packaging-free boxes of 6, so the tin may be the older packaging; we couldn't confirm that.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many cartridges come in a J. Herbin tin?

Six, all the same color. Yoseka, Jenni Bick, The Journal Shop and Cult Pens each give six standard international short cartridges per tin.

### What size are J. Herbin cartridges?

The Journal Shop lists 3.8 cm long and 0.7 cm across per cartridge, so 38 × 7 mm. Herbin's own pages we read give no cartridge size, so we haven't confirmed it with the maker.

### Do J. Herbin cartridges fit Kaweco and Pelikan pens?

Probably: Goulet Pens' chart, which our cartridge roundup follows, lists Kaweco and Pelikan as taking standard international cartridges. We haven't tried a Herbin tin in either.

### Do J. Herbin cartridges fit Pilot or LAMY pens?

No, per the same chart: Pilot, LAMY, Platinum, Sailor, Parker and Cross use their own cartridges, not standard international ones.

### Are J. Herbin cartridges made in France?

Jenni Bick and The Journal Shop both say so, and Herbin's English page for its Perle Noire range says Made in France.

### What is the cartridge ink made of?

Retailers call it water-based with natural dyes and non-toxic. Cult Pens calls it neutral pH and fast-drying. These are retailer descriptions, and we haven't found a measured test.

### How many colors does J. Herbin sell in cartridge tins?

It depends on the shop: Yoseka lists 24, Jenni Bick says 25 and The Journal Shop lists 23. Stock changes, and Yoseka's product codes mark two colors discontinued.

### Does the tin have a part number?

Each color has one, ending in T. Yoseka's code for Perle Noire is 20109T, the same reference Herbin's own Perle Noire page lists for its box of 6 cartridges.
