## What is G. Lalo Vergé de France?

**It is G. Lalo's laid writing paper, the textured French letter paper that fountain pen users and letter writers have bought for decades.** Makkura, a French stationer, calls it one of the most emblematic products of G. Lalo, which it says has been Paris's reference for fine correspondence since 1920.

The pad is the simplest way to buy it: blank sheets glued at the head, ready to tear off for a letter. G. Lalo also sells the paper as correspondence sets with envelopes.

## What makes laid paper different?

**Laid paper carries a pattern of close parallel lines crossed by wider chain lines, pressed in as the sheet forms.** Makkura explains that the fine horizontal vergeures and vertical pontuseaux show through against the light and also work as a discreet writing guide.

![A5 G. Lalo Vergé de France sheet, 148 × 210 mm, with laid lines, next to a US Letter outline](https://stationerytimes.com/images/g-lalo-verge-de-france-writing-pad-sheet.svg)

*An A5 sheet is a little over half a US Letter page.*

On the page, the texture gives a slight ribbed feel under the nib. Reviewers differ on how much they notice it: some find it pleasant tooth, others a little dry.

## Is it good for fountain pens?

**Makkura says its 100 g/m² weight makes it particularly liked for fountain pens, and reviews mostly agree.** The Well-Appointed Desk and Canadian retailer Wonderpens' reviewers report little or no feathering, even with a flex nib, while one reviewer found some inks dried a little scratchy on the texture.

At 100 g/m² it is heavier than the 90 g/m² [Clairefontaine Triomphe](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/clairefontaine-triomphe-pad/) and the 80 g/m² [Midori MD Letter Pad](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/midori-md-letter-pad/), so it feels substantial in an envelope. Our [paper weight guide](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/paper-weight-gsm-explained/) explains what those numbers mean.

## How does it compare with other letter pads?

**Lalo is the textured, cotton-blend choice; Triomphe is the slick one.**

| | G. Lalo Vergé de France A5 | Clairefontaine Triomphe A5 | Original Crown Mill Pure Cotton A5 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface | Laid, ribbed | Very smooth | Felt, soft |
| Weight | 100 g/m² | 90 g/m² | 100 g |
| Fiber | 25% cotton | Not stated | 100% cotton |
| Guide sheet | No (laid lines guide) | Yes, on blank pads | Yes |
| Price band | $$ | $$ | $$ |

Triomphe figures come from its guide; for the all-cotton option, see our [Original Crown Mill Pure Cotton](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/original-crown-mill-pure-cotton-a5-pad/) guide.

## What sizes and formats are there?

**The paper comes as A5 and A4 pads, as boxed correspondence sets and as matching envelopes.** Makkura's French catalog lists A5 pads in white, extra white, ivory and blue, and A4 pads (210 × 297 mm, 8.3 × 11.7 in) in white, extra white and ivory.

For a first letter, the A5 pad is the easy start: a sheet folds once into a C6 envelope, and 50 sheets last a long time. Goulet also sells A5 correspondence sets that pair sheets with envelopes in one box, and Amazon US carries a small letter set with 10 A5 sheets and 5 envelopes.

If you write on unlined paper for the first time, slide a lined sheet underneath; at 100 g/m² the laid sheet is fairly opaque, so a dark-ruled guide works better than a pale one.

## Which color should you choose?

**Choose white for a crisp page, ivory for a warmer tone, or blue for a tinted sheet.** Goulet stocks white and ivory A5 pads, with matching small envelopes sold separately.

## Where is G. Lalo paper made?

**In France: Makkura's listing gives the origin as made in France.** G. Lalo is a Paris brand of the Exacompta Clairefontaine group, which also owns Clairefontaine and Rhodia; Amazon US lists the maker as Lalo, Herbin & Brause.
