## Key takeaways

- Four picks sit in our $ band (under $5 per pen): the Vision Elite, Vision, Precise V5 and OHTO Fude Ball; the CR01, ZENTO and Tornado are $$$ pens ($20–75).
- The Vision Elite is 142 mm (5.6 in) long and 15 g per uni-ball UK, with 0.5 mm micro and 0.8 mm bold points in up to 8 US ink colors.
- The Pilot Precise V5's 0.5 mm needle tip writes a line about 0.3 mm wide, per UK retailers; the capped pen is 13.4 cm and 10 g.
- The OHTO CR01 refills with a C-305 ceramic-ball cartridge that OHTO says won't dry out uncapped, in a 33 g aluminum body made in Japan.
- Only three picks refill: the CR01 (C-305), the EnerGel RTX (LR and LRN refills) and the Retro 51 Tornado (Schmidt P8127-type capless rollerball).

## What is the best rollerball pen?

**On published specs, the uni-ball Vision Elite is the best rollerball pen for most people, with the Pilot Precise V5 as the needle-tip pick, the OHTO CR01 as the refillable metal pen and the Retro 51 Tornado as the gift.** A rollerball rolls thin, water-based liquid ink, which writes darker and wetter than a ballpoint but takes longer to dry. Four of the eight picks sit in our $ band (under $5 per pen), and the three metal pens are $$$ ($20–75).

The Vision Elite is #1 because uni says its Super Ink resists water and fraud and won't leak on planes, which fixes a liquid ink's two weak spots. For how the inks differ, see [gel vs ballpoint vs rollerball](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/gel-vs-ballpoint-vs-rollerball/).

- **Best overall:** [uni-ball Vision Elite](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/uni-ball-vision-elite/). *Why it's here:* liquid uni Super Ink that uni says resists water and fraud and won't leak on planes, in 0.5 mm micro or 0.8 mm bold.
- **Best cheap everyday rollerball:** [uni-ball Vision](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/uni-ball-vision/). *Why it's here:* the simpler 1994 original, sold abroad as the uni-ball Eye, in 0.5, 0.7 and 1.0 mm with a window that shows the ink.
- **Best needle tip:** [Pilot Precise V5](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pilot-precise-v5/). *Why it's here:* a needle tip that writes about 0.3 mm from a 0.5 mm Extra Fine point, in a 10 g capped pen; the V5 RT version refills.
- **Best fast-drying liquid ink:** [Pentel EnerGel RTX](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pentel-energel/). *Why it's here:* the fast-drying option, a liquid gel Pentel says dries quicker than ordinary gel, refillable in 0.3 to 1.0 mm.
- **Best refillable metal rollerball:** [OHTO CR01](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/ohto-cr01/). *Why it's here:* an aluminum pen with OHTO's C-305 ceramic-ball refill, whose non-dry design OHTO says survives a forgotten cap; made in Japan.
- **Best brush-like line:** [OHTO Fude Ball 1.5](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/ohto-fude-ball/). *Why it's here:* the boldest line here, a 1.5 mm ball, with waterproof pigment ink.
- **Best gift:** [Retro 51 Tornado](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/retro-51-tornado/). *Why it's here:* the gift pick, a lacquered stainless steel twist rollerball that takes Schmidt capless refills.
- **Best for signatures:** [uni-ball ZENTO Signature](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/uni-ball-zento-signature/). *Why it's here:* a metal-bodied 22 g pen with water-based pigment ink, heavier than the plastic picks, for a signature that lasts.

## How did we choose these picks?

**We compiled these picks from published sources, not hands-on testing: makers' ink and tip claims, US supplier spec sheets, US availability and price band.** We chose by ink, tip and refills, the things that decide how a rollerball writes and how long it lasts.

## How do the rollerball pens compare?

**The three cheapest pens are disposable; the three metal pens and the EnerGel refill.** Figures come from each pen's guide.

| | Vision Elite | Vision | Precise V5 | EnerGel RTX | OHTO CR01 | Fude Ball 1.5 | Retro 51 Tornado | ZENTO Signature |

## Is a rollerball better than a ballpoint?

**A rollerball writes darker with less pressure; a ballpoint dries faster and lasts longer.** Liquid ink flows freely, so the line is saturated and the pen glides, but the ink takes seconds to dry and can bleed through thin paper. Oil-based ballpoint paste dries almost at once (BIC says under 2 seconds) and a refill writes for kilometers.

Choose a rollerball for letters, signatures and journals on decent paper. Choose a ballpoint, or a hybrid such as the Jetstream, for carbon forms, receipts and writing with the left hand.

## Which rollerball pens take refills?

**The OHTO CR01, Pentel EnerGel RTX, Retro 51 Tornado, ZENTO and the Precise V5 RT.** The CR01 takes OHTO's C-300 series: C-304 (0.4 mm), C-305 (0.5 mm), C-307 (0.7 mm) and C-310 (1.0 mm). The Tornado takes capless rollerball refills such as the Schmidt P8127 and P8126, which also fit many other capless rollerballs. The EnerGel takes Pentel's LR and LRN refills.

The Vision, Vision Elite, capped Precise V5 and Fude Ball are disposable. At under $5 a pen they are the cheapest way into liquid ink, but a refillable pen costs less over years.

## Which rollerball pen should you choose?

**Match the tip to your handwriting and the paper to the ink.**

- **Small handwriting:** Precise V5 (about 0.3 mm line) or Vision Elite 0.5 mm micro.
- **Signing checks and forms:** Vision Elite or ZENTO Signature, both with fraud-resistant claims from Mitsubishi Pencil.
- **Travel:** Vision Elite, the only one with an airplane-safe claim.
- **A pen that stays in a bag uncapped:** OHTO CR01, whose refill OHTO says doesn't dry out.
- **Bold, expressive lines:** Fude Ball 1.5.
- **Left-handed:** EnerGel RTX, which Pentel recommends for lefties; see also our [pens that don't smudge](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/best-pens-that-dont-smudge/).

## Where are these rollerball pens made?

**Six of the eight are listed as made in Japan.** US supplier spec sheets give Japan for the Vision, Vision Elite and Precise V5, OHTO's own pages say made in Japan for the CR01 and Fude Ball, and Mitsubishi Pencil's listings cover the ZENTO. Pentel of America's catalog gives Japan or Mexico for the EnerGel RTX. Retro 51 makes the Tornado in Taiwan for its Texas brand.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between a rollerball and a gel pen?

Both use water-based ink, but a rollerball's ink is thin liquid that flows fast and writes dark, while gel ink is thickened so it sits on the paper. Liquid ink feathers and bleeds more on cheap paper and smears longer; Pentel's EnerGel is a liquid gel that sits between the two.

### Which rollerball pen is best for signing documents?

The uni-ball Vision Elite or Vision, whose uni Super Ink the maker says resists water, fading and fraud attempts such as check washing. The uni-ball ZENTO Signature uses a water-based pigment ink in a metal body for the same job at a higher price.

### What is the finest rollerball pen?

The Pilot Precise V5, with a 0.5 mm Extra Fine needle tip that UK retailers say draws a line about 0.3 mm wide. The uni-ball Vision Elite 0.5 mm micro is the next finest here; the OHTO CR01 takes a 0.4 mm C-304 refill.

### Can you refill a uni-ball Vision Elite?

No. uni-ball says the Vision and Vision Elite are not refillable. For a refillable liquid-ink pen, the Pilot Precise V5 RT takes Pilot's 0.5 mm RT refill, the OHTO CR01 takes C-300 series refills, and the Retro 51 Tornado takes capless rollerball refills.

### Which rollerball pen won't leak on an airplane?

uni-ball markets the Vision Elite as airplane safe, with a design meant to stop leaks from cabin-pressure changes. uni-ball makes no such claim for the standard Vision.

### What is a good rollerball pen to give as a gift?

The Retro 51 Tornado, a lacquered stainless steel twist pen made in Taiwan for the Texas brand, sold in collectible designs, or the OHTO CR01, a 33 g aluminum pen made in Japan with a ceramic-ball refill. Both sit in our $$$ band ($20–75).

### Which rollerball pen writes like a brush?

The OHTO Fude Ball 1.5. Its 1.5 mm ball, three times the size of a 0.5 mm point, lays down a bold, slightly variable line that OHTO designed for brush-like strokes, at ¥150 (about US$0.90) in Japan.

### Are rollerball pens good for left-handed writers?

Usually not, because liquid ink stays wet longest. Left-handers who want the dark line should try the Pentel EnerGel, which Pentel markets as quick-drying and recommends for left-handed writers, or see our guide to pens that don't smudge.
