- Made in (Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen (Cocoon FCO-3SR in Japan), F or M steel nib): Japan. Per Milligram's listing (made in Japan). Pilot's Japanese catalog page for the Cocoon (read in full on October 20, 2026) doesn't state a country. eBay and Rokomari listings cited earlier blocked our access on that date, so we dropped them. Source: https://milligram.com/products/pilot-pen-metropolitan-fountain-pen
- Made in (LAMY safari fountain pen, EF to B steel nib): Germany. LAMY's own product listing (India storefront) gives Germany as the country of origin and names C. Josef Lamy GmbH, Heidelberg, as the manufacturer, and also says made in Germany. LAMY's German page names no country. Source: https://www.lamy.com/en-in/p/lamy-safari-fountain-pen
- Made in (TWSBI ECO piston-filling fountain pen, EF to 1.1 mm stub): Taiwan. Goldspot's ECO spec sheet says "Made in Taiwan", and Pen Chalet shows "ECO-T Taiwan" engraved on the ECO-T's cap band. Source: https://goldspot.com/products/twsbi-eco-fountain-pen-in-black
- Made in (Pilot Kakuno fountain pen (FKA-1SR), EF, F or M steel nib): Japan. Unsharpen gives Japan as the country of origin, and Mynavi News calls the Kakuno a domestic (kokusan) fountain pen. Pilot's Japanese catalog page for FKA-1SR (read in full on October 20, 2026) doesn't state a country. LarryPost, cited earlier, no longer loads. Source: https://unsharpen.com/pen/pilot-kakuno/
- Made in (Platinum Preppy fountain pen (PSQ-300 / PSQ-400), 02, 03 or 05 nib): Japan. Per retailer listings: Hunter Paper Co says made in Japan and Unsharpen gives Japan as the country of origin (both read on October 20, 2026). Platinum's Japanese product pages don't state it. Source: https://hunterpaperco.com/products/platinum-preppy-fountain-pen-fine-nib
- Made in (Platinum Plaisir aluminum fountain pen (PGB-1000), 03 or 05 nib): Not stated. Platinum's Japanese and English Plaisir pages don't state the country of manufacture, and the Amazon US listing we read doesn't either. Platinum is a Tokyo company; check the box.
- Made in (TWSBI GO spring-piston fountain pen, EF to 1.1 mm stub): Taiwan. Goldspot's TWSBI GO listing says "Made in Taiwan". TWSBI's own store says the brand was started by TaShin Precision after 50-plus years as an OEM manufacturer, but its GO page doesn't print a country of manufacture. TWSBI's Taiwanese site, twsbi.com.tw, refused our connection on October 21, 2026. Source: https://www.goldspot.com/products/twsbi-go-fountain-pen-in-smoke
- Made in (TWSBI SWIPE cartridge/converter fountain pen, EF to 1.1 mm stub): Not stated. TWSBI's US store and Goulet Pens' SWIPE listing don't print a country of manufacture, and TWSBI's Taiwanese site, twsbi.com.tw, refused our connection on October 22, 2026. Goldspot says the steel nib is made by JOWO in Germany. TWSBI is a Taiwanese brand, and Goldspot labels other TWSBI pens "Made in Taiwan". Source: https://www.twsbi.com/products/twsbi-swipe-smoke-fountain-pen
- Made in (Kaweco Classic Sport pocket fountain pen, EF to BB steel nib): Germany. Kaweco's German product page labels the Classic Sport "100% Made in Germany" and says all nibs and the pen itself are made in Germany; its series page says Classic Sport pens are produced and assembled in Germany. - Made in (Pilot Varsity (Precise Varsity) disposable fountain pen, medium nib): Japan. Per OnTimeSupplies' spec sheet for item 90010 (country of origin Japan) and PartsSource's listing for the same item. Pilot USA's product page doesn't state it. ## What is the best fountain pen under $50?

**On published specs and October 2026 US prices, the Pilot Metropolitan is the best fountain pen under US$50 for most people, with the LAMY safari as the swappable-nib pick, the TWSBI ECO as the piston filler and the Pilot Kakuno as the cheapest good pen.** US prices rose in 2026, so we checked each pen at Goulet Pens or the maker's store on October 23, 2026 rather than trusting older figures. The Metropolitan is #1 because it's the only brass-bodied pen here and comes with a converter, for US$34. For pens up to US$100, see our [under $100 guide](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/best-fountain-pens-under-100/).

- **Best overall:** [Pilot Metropolitan](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pilot-metropolitan/). *Why it's here:* the only brass body here, with a converter in the box, so it takes cartridges or bottled ink from day one; 138 mm (5.4 in), 26 g; US$34.
- **Best for swapping nibs:** [LAMY safari](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/lamy-safari/). *Why it's here:* push-on steel nibs you swap by hand, from EF to B plus 1.1 and 1.5 mm italics; 139.5 mm, 17 g; US$29.60.
- **Best piston filler:** [TWSBI ECO](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/twsbi-eco/). *Why it's here:* the most ink here, up to 1.76 ml from a bottle, more than the TWSBI GO's 1.61 ml; nibs EF to 1.1 mm stub; US$36.99.
- **Best cheap pen:** [Pilot Kakuno](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pilot-kakuno/). *Why it's here:* a full pen with a smiling nib in EF, F or M for US$15, under half the Metropolitan's price; 131 mm, 11 g.
- **Best first try:** [Platinum Preppy](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/platinum-preppy/). *Why it's here:* at US$7 the cheapest refillable pick here, with a Slip & Seal cap and 02, 03 or 05 nibs.
- **Best metal pen under $20:** [Platinum Plaisir](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/platinum-plaisir/). *Why it's here:* the Preppy's nib and Slip & Seal cap in an aluminum body for US$17.60; 142.5 mm, 15.4 g.
- **Best under $25 piston:** [TWSBI GO](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/twsbi-go/). *Why it's here:* the cheapest piston-style pen here, a spring-loaded piston holding 1.61 ml for US$21.99; 134 mm, 17 g.
- **Most ways to fill:** [TWSBI SWIPE](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/twsbi-swipe/). *Why it's here:* the only pick boxed with three ways to fill in North America: cartridge, twist converter and spring converter; 138.1 mm, 15 g.
- **Best pocket pen:** [Kaweco Classic Sport](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/kaweco-sport/). *Why it's here:* the only pocket pen here, 105 mm (4.1 in) capped and 10.7 g, nibs EF to BB; US$34.
- **Best full-size starter:** Kaweco Perkeo. *Why it's here:* Kaweco's full-size pen, with a triangular grip and international cartridges, for less than the Classic Sport (US$20); 138.6 mm, 12 g.
- **Best disposable:** Pilot Varsity. *Why it's here:* the only disposable, pre-filled with a medium nib in 7 ink colors, under $5.

## How did we choose these picks?

**We compiled these picks from published sources, not hands-on testing: makers' specs and claims, US prices at Goulet Pens or the maker's store on October 23, 2026, US availability and price band.** We kept pens listed under US$50 that day and chose one per need: filling system, nib, size or price.

## How do the fountain pens under $50 compare?

**Three picks fill from a bottle only; the rest take cartridges.** Figures come from each pen's guide, with US prices from Goulet Pens or the maker's store on October 23, 2026.

## Cartridge, converter or piston?

**A cartridge pen is simplest; a piston pen holds the most ink and costs the least per fill.** The Preppy, Plaisir, Kaweco Sport and Varsity are at their best with cartridges. The Metropolitan, safari, Kakuno, SWIPE and Perkeo take a converter so you can use bottled ink, which is cheaper per fill and opens up thousands of colors.

The TWSBI ECO and GO skip cartridges entirely. Their pistons hold 1.76 ml and 1.61 ml, against about 0.4 ml in a Pilot CON-40 converter, so they refill a quarter as often. Our guide to filling a fountain pen walks through each system.

## Japanese or German nibs?

**Japanese nibs write finer at the same label.** A Pilot or Platinum Fine lays down a line close to a LAMY or Kaweco Extra Fine, and the Platinum 02 and Pilot Kakuno EF are the finest here. German nibs from LAMY and Kaweco run wetter and broader and suit larger handwriting. See our Japanese vs Western nib sizes guide for the chart.

Nib swapping is a LAMY strength: safari nibs pull off and push on by hand, so one US$29.60 pen can run a 1.5 mm italic on Monday and an EF on Tuesday. TWSBI sells complete nib units for the ECO, GO and SWIPE, which share the same #4 nib.

## Which fountain pen under $50 should you choose?

**Match the pen to how you'll fill it and carry it.**

- **First fountain pen, not sure you'll stick with it:** Preppy or Kakuno.
- **Daily writer with a converter in the box:** Metropolitan.
- **You want to try several nib widths:** safari.
- **Bottled ink and long sessions:** ECO or GO.
- **Pocket or pencil case:** Kaweco Sport.
- **Left-handed:** safari with the LH nib, or the Faber-Castell Grip 2010, which Faber-Castell markets for both hands.

## Where are these fountain pens made?

**Japan, Germany and Taiwan.** Pilot's Kakuno, Metropolitan and Varsity and Platinum's Preppy are listed as made in Japan by retailer spec sheets or the maker; LAMY and Kaweco state Germany on their own listings; Goldspot's spec sheets give Taiwan for the TWSBI ECO and GO. Platinum doesn't print a country for the Plaisir and TWSBI none for the SWIPE on the pages we read, so those read "Not stated".

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best fountain pen under $50 for a beginner?

The Pilot Metropolitan or LAMY safari. Both come with a converter or take one, write reliably from the box and cost about US$30 to US$34 in October 2026. A Pilot Kakuno at US$15 is the safer first try if you aren't sure you'll keep writing with a fountain pen.

### What is the cheapest good fountain pen?

The Platinum Preppy, US$7 at Goulet Pens in October 2026 and ¥660 (about US$4.20) in Japan. It has a real steel nib in 02, 03 or 05 and a Slip & Seal cap that keeps the cartridge usable for a year. The Pilot Kakuno at US$15 adds a sturdier body and a converter option.

### Which fountain pen under $50 holds the most ink?

The TWSBI ECO, a piston filler that Goulet measures at up to 1.76 ml, followed by the TWSBI GO at 1.61 ml. Both fill only from a bottle. Among cartridge pens the TWSBI SWIPE reaches 1.65 ml with its converter, and 5.64 ml if you fill the barrel as an eyedropper.

### Is the Pilot Metropolitan better than the LAMY safari?

They suit different hands. The Metropolitan is brass, 26 g, with a Japanese Fine nib that writes like a Western Extra Fine. The safari is plastic, 17 g, with a molded triangular grip and nibs you can swap by hand from EF to B. Our head-to-head guide covers the differences.

### Which fountain pen under $50 is best for small handwriting?

A Japanese pen in Fine or Extra Fine: the Pilot Kakuno EF, Metropolitan F or Platinum Preppy 02, which Platinum calls Extra Fine. Japanese nib sizes run about one step finer than German ones, so a Pilot F writes close to a LAMY EF.

### What is the best pocket fountain pen under $50?

The Kaweco Classic Sport: 105 mm (4.1 in) capped, about 13 cm posted, 10.7 g, with an octagonal cap that stops it rolling. It takes short international cartridges, and the clip is sold separately.

### Do fountain pens under $50 come with a converter?

The Pilot Metropolitan ships with a cartridge and a converter, and North American TWSBI SWIPE boxes hold a cartridge plus two converters. The safari, Kakuno, Preppy, Plaisir, Perkeo and Kaweco Sport take a converter sold separately. The ECO and GO are piston fillers and need no converter.

### Where are the fountain pens under $50 made?

Japan for the Pilot and Platinum pens, Germany for the LAMY safari and Kaweco pens, and Taiwan for the TWSBI ECO and GO, per the makers or retailer spec sheets. Platinum doesn't state a country for the Plaisir and TWSBI none for the SWIPE on the pages we read.
