- Made in (Tombow MONO Original correction tape, 4.2 mm × 10 m (US 68620)): Not stated. Tombow USA, Tombow Europe, Staples and Amazon don't state a country of manufacture for the MONO Original. Some European listings for the CT-YT4 that appeared in search results give Vietnam, but we couldn't load those pages to confirm, so check the pack.
- Made in (Tombow MONO Air correction tape, 10 m (US 68695, 6 mm)): Not stated. Tombow Japan's product page, Tombow USA's page and the Amazon listings we read don't state a country of manufacture, so check the pack.
- Made in (BIC Wite-Out EZ Correct correction tape, 4.2 mm × 12 m): Japan; Mexico. US grocery listings for the single tape (Stop & Shop, Giant) give "Made in Japan, Mexico", rechecked October 20, 2026, so a given pack may come from either. BIC's French corporate site has no product pages for Wite-Out, which is a North American brand (BIC sells correction tape in Europe as Tipp-Ex), and its former consumer sites now return 'gone'. ## Key takeaways

- Tombow MONO Original (US 68620) holds 4.2 mm × 10 m of PET film tape and is not refillable; Tombow USA says you can write over it at once with pen, pencil or marker.
- Tombow MONO Air holds 10 m in 4.2, 5 or 6 mm; Tombow Japan lists it at ¥308 (about US$1.90) and says its Air Touch system keeps the pull light to the end.
- BIC Wite-Out EZ Correct holds 12 m of 4.2 mm tape, the most of the three disposables; US grocery listings give Japan and Mexico as countries of origin.
- Tombow's refillable MONO (68665) takes 1/6 in × 472 in snap-in cartridges, about 12 m, and sits in our $$ band ($5–20).
- Plus Whiper Petit is one of the smallest: 58 × 15 × 26 mm with 6 m of tape in 2.5, 4, 5 or 6 mm, per Plus's catalog.

## What is the best correction tape?

**On published specs, the best correction tapes are the Tombow MONO Original for a one-line 4.2 mm strip you can write on at once, the Tombow MONO Air for a pull that stays light to the last meter, and the BIC Wite-Out EZ Correct for the most tape in a disposable, 12 m.** The MONO Original is #1 because its strip covers one college-ruled line and takes ink at once, from a dispenser whose design won iF and red dot awards. All three are side-application film tapes: you pull the dispenser along a line like a pen and lay a dry white strip over the mistake.

- **Best overall:** [Tombow MONO Original](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/tombow-mono-correction-tape/). *Why it's here:* a 4.2 mm × 10 m PET strip that covers one college-ruled line, in a 70% recycled dispenser whose design won iF and red dot awards in 1996.
- **Smoothest pull:** [Tombow MONO Air](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/tombow-mono-air-correction-tape/). *Why it's here:* Tombow's Air Touch system locks the tape when you lift the head, and Tombow says the pull stays light to the last meter; 10 m in 4.2, 5 or 6 mm in Japan, 6 mm in the US.
- **Most tape for the money:** [BIC Wite-Out EZ Correct](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/bic-wite-out-ez-correct/). *Why it's here:* 12 m on a 4.2 mm tape, 2 m more than either Tombow disposable, and it's the US best-seller, in 3-, 4- and 10-packs.
- **Refillable:** Tombow MONO refillable 68665. *Why it's here:* you keep the dispenser and snap in 1/6 in × 472 in (about 12 m) cartridges, as much as the BIC per load; it costs more up front ($$).
- **Smallest:** Plus Whiper Petit. *Why it's here:* at 58 × 15 × 26 mm, about the size of an eraser, it fits a pen case and still carries 6 m of tape.

## How did we choose these picks?

**We compiled these picks from published sources, not hands-on testing: makers' specs and claims, US retailer listings, US availability and price band.** We compared width, length and refills, because width decides whether a tape covers one line of your ruling and length decides how long it lasts.

## How do the correction tapes compare?

**The three disposables are all 10 to 12 m long and all under $5; the refillable Tombow costs more up front and the Plus tapes trade length for size.** Figures are the makers' or their retailers'.

| Tape | Width | Length | Refillable | Made in | Band |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tombow MONO Original (68620) | 4.2 mm | 10 m | No | Not stated | $ (under $5) |
| Tombow MONO Air (68695 US; CT-CA4/5/6 Japan) | 6 mm US; 4.2, 5, 6 mm Japan | 10 m | No | Not stated | $ |
| BIC Wite-Out EZ Correct | 4.2 mm | 12 m | No | Japan or Mexico | $ |
| Tombow MONO refillable (68665) | 1/6 in (4.2 mm) | 472 in (about 12 m) per cartridge | Yes | Not stated | $$ ($5–20) |
| Plus Whiper MR (WH-635) | 5 mm | 6 m | Yes, WH-635R | Vietnam | $ |
| Plus Whiper Petit (WH-812 to WH-816) | 2.5, 4, 5 or 6 mm | 6 m | No | Not stated | $ |

Tombow doesn't state where the MONO tapes are made on any of the maker or US retailer pages we read; the Plus Petit catalog page gives materials but no origin.

## Which tape width do you need?

**Pick the width that covers one line of your ruling with a little to spare: 4.2 mm for college ruling, 5 mm for Japanese A-ruled notebooks, 6 mm for wide ruling.** College-ruled paper has 7.1 mm between lines, so a 4.2 mm strip covers x-height letters without touching the line above. Japanese A-ruled paper is 7 mm and B-ruled 6 mm, where 5 mm fits neatly. Wide ruling at 8.7 mm and large handwriting want the 6 mm.

Tombow's MONO Air is the easy way to get all three widths from one design, though only the 6 mm is sold by Tombow USA. Plus's Petit adds a 2.5 mm strip for single characters and small print.

## How much tape is 10 m?

**About 46 lines across an 8.5 in (216 mm) page for a 10 m tape, and about 55 for a 12 m one, by our arithmetic.** Most corrections are a word or two, so one dispenser usually lasts a school year. Tombow USA says the MONO Original takes pen, pencil or marker at once, and the BIC goes on dry as well, so there's no waiting as with fluid.

Refillable models cost more at the start and less over time. Tombow's refillable MONO sits in the $$ band ($5–20) but takes about 12 m cartridges; its pen-style MONO Air 68696 takes 5 mm × 6 m ones. Plus's Whiper MR takes the WH-635R refill.

## What about the Plus Whiper tapes?

**Plus, the Japanese maker behind the Whiper range, is the pick for a tape that fits a pen case.** Its Petit is about the size of an eraser, 58 × 15 × 26 mm, and still carries 6 m of tape; the head uses a mini roller, and Plus says you can pull for a sentence or push for a single letter. It comes in 2.5 mm (WH-812), 4 mm (WH-814), 5 mm (WH-815) and 6 mm (WH-816).

The Whiper MR is the standard-size sibling: 5 mm × 6 m as the WH-635, with a one-touch cap and the WH-635R refill. Singapore's FairPrice lists its country of origin as Vietnam. Neither is sold by Plus in the US, so look to importers.

## Correction tape or correction fluid?

**Tape, for almost everyone: it goes on dry, lies flat and takes ink at once.** Fluid still wins for an irregular shape, a mark on a textured surface, or covering a block of text rather than a line. If you'd rather lift a pencil mark than cover it, a precision eraser like the [Tombow MONO Zero](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/tombow-mono-zero-eraser/) does that, and erasable pens like the [Pilot FriXion](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pilot-frixion-clicker/) avoid the question altogether.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which correction tape is best for school?

The BIC Wite-Out EZ Correct, for the most tape at 12 m in the $ band and a 4.2 mm width that covers one line on college ruling. Buy the multi-pack: US listings include 3-, 4- and 10-packs.

### Which correction tape width should I buy?

Match the tape to your writing. 4.2 mm covers one line of small handwriting on 7.1 mm college ruling; 5 mm suits 6 mm Japanese A-ruled notebooks; 6 mm covers wide ruling and large print. Tombow's MONO Air comes in all three in Japan.

### Can you write over correction tape immediately?

Yes. Film tapes go on dry, unlike correction fluid. Tombow USA says pen, pencil or marker work at once; Tombow Japan warns that mechanical pencils and fountain pen nibs can lift the tape when you rewrite.

### Is Tombow MONO or BIC Wite-Out better?

The BIC holds 2 m more tape, 12 m against 10 m. Tombow's MONO is the design classic, with iF and red dot awards from 1996, and its MONO Air pulls lighter. Both are 4.2 mm, both under $5.

### Are there refillable correction tapes?

Yes. Tombow's refillable MONO (68665) takes 1/6 in × 472 in snap-in cartridges, and the pen-style MONO Air 68696 takes 5 mm × 6 m ones. Plus sells WH-635R refills for its Whiper MR.

### What is the smallest correction tape?

Plus's Whiper Petit, which Plus says is one of the world's smallest, based on its own 2015 comparison. The body is 58 × 15 × 26 mm, about the size of an eraser, with 6 m of tape in 2.5, 4, 5 or 6 mm.

### Does correction tape show on a photocopy?

Usually not: Tombow USA says the MONO's adhesion gives clean copying. Tombow Japan warns that some copiers and printers can jam on corrected sheets or fail to print on the tape.
